How do children with Tourette's syndrome and their caregivers live with the disorder? A systematic review of qualitative evidence.

BACKGROUND: Tourette's syndrome (TS) is a childhood neurodevelopmental disorder characterized by sudden, repetitive, involuntary, and irregular muscle movement and vocalization. Recently, non-pharmaceutical methods, such as behavioral therapy, psychotherapy, and deep brain stimulation, have been introduced as alternatives to pharmacological treatment for TS. This study aimed to systematically review and synthesize qualitative evidence on the experiences of children with TS and their caregivers. A meta-synthesis of qualitative evidence could help provide a comprehensive understanding of the cha

Outcomes of Ottawa, Canada's Managed Opioid Program (MOP) where supervised injectable hydromorphone was paired with assisted housing.

BACKGROUND: The Ottawa Inner City Health's Managed Opioid Program is the first, to our knowledge, to pair injectable opioid agonist hydromorphone treatment with assisted housing for people experiencing homelessness with severe opioid use disorder (OUD) and injection drug use. We aimed to describe this program and evaluate retention, health, and social wellbeing outcomes. METHODS: We retrospectively assessed the first cohort of clients enrolled in the Managed Opioid Program between August 2017-2018. The primary outcome was retention at 12 months. Secondary outcomes included injectable and oral

Undiagnosed Autism Spectrum Disorder in a Child With Chronic Pain: A Case Report.

The literature acknowledges the presence of psychiatric comorbidities in pediatric chronic pain populations. Few studies have focused on comorbidity with autism spectrum disorders. We describe the case of a 10-year-old patient at the onset of his care by the chronic pain team. This boy had been experiencing refractory multifocal chronic pain for three years and had undergone multiple medical examinations that had not identified the cause of the pain or provided sufficient pain relief. During our consultations, the behavioral peculiarities (averted gaze, inhibition), the atypical description of

Serotonin-releasing agents with reduced off-target effects.

Increasing extracellular levels of serotonin (5-HT) in the brain ameliorates symptoms of depression and anxiety-related disorders, e.g., social phobias and post-traumatic stress disorder. Recent evidence from preclinical and clinical studies established the therapeutic potential of drugs inducing the release of 5-HT via the 5-HT-transporter. Nevertheless, current 5-HT releasing compounds under clinical investigation carry the risk for abuse and deleterious side effects. Here, we demonstrate that S-enantiomers of certain ring-substituted cathinones show preference for the release of 5-HT ex viv

Reduction of cortical parvalbumin-expressing GABAergic interneurons in a rodent hyperoxia model of preterm birth brain injury with deficits in social behavior and cognition.

The inhibitory GABAergic system in the brain is involved in the etiology of various psychiatric problems, including autism spectrum disorders (ASD), attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and others. These disorders are influenced not only by genetic but also by environmental factors, such as preterm birth, although the underlying mechanisms are not known. In a translational hyperoxia model, exposing mice pups at P5 to 80% oxygen for 48 h to mimic a steep rise of oxygen exposure caused by preterm birth from in utero into room air, we documented a persistent reduction of cortical matur

Artemisinin Alleviates Chronic Social Defeat Stress-Induced Depressive-Like Behavior by Inhibiting Neuroinflammation via the TLR4/MyD88/NF-κB/NLRP3 Signaling Pathway.

Neuroinflammation caused by neuroimmune dysfunction is important for the pathogenesis of major depressive disorders; new antidepressant treatments are urgently needed. Artemisinin (ART) has anti-inflammatory and neuroprotective effects; it can alleviate the inflammatory response in the central nervous system. This study investigated the antidepressant effects and potential mechanisms of action of ART in mice with depression. Mice with chronic social defeat stress (CSDS) and lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-induced depression were used to investigate the antidepressant effects and mechanisms of ART. Mi

Pre-reproductive stress in adolescent female rats alters maternal care and DNA methylation patterns across generations.

Stress during development affects maternal behavior and offspring phenotypes. Stress in adolescence is particularly consequential on brain development and maturation, and is implicated in several psychiatric disorders. We previously showed that pre-reproductive stress (PRS) in female adolescent rats affects behavior and corticotropin releasing hormone receptor 1 (CRHR1) expression in first- (F1) and second- (F2) generation offspring. We further showed that offspring phenotypes are partially reversed by post-stress treatment with fluoxetine (FLX) or the CRHR1 antagonist NBI27914 (NBI). Epigenet

An interrupted time series analysis of gambling behavior based on gambling operator revenue-based taxation during the COVID-19 pandemic in Sweden.

OBJECTIVES: The impact of COVID-19 on gambling behavior and the gambling industry itself has been widely speculated. Prior studies have shown how boredom, social isolation, poor mental health, and financial hardships, all of which have been associated with COVID-19, can aggravate problem gambling behaviors in patients with gambling disorders while also luring newcomers. Few studies have used methods other than self-report to assess longitudinal behavioral changes in gambling behavior before versus during the pandemic. STUDY DESIGN: The present study addresses this gap by using an interrupted

Chronic social instability stress down-regulates IL-10 and up-regulates CX3CR1 in tumor-bearing and non-tumor-bearing female mice.

Extensive literature has reported a link between stress and tumor progression, and between both of these factors and mental health. Despite the higher incidence of affective disorders in females and the neurochemical differences according to sex, female populations have been understudied. The aim of this study was therefore to analyze the effect of stress on tumor development in female OF1 mice. For this purpose, subjects were inoculated with B16F10 melanoma cells and exposed to the Chronic Social Instability Stress (CSIS) model. Behavioral, neurochemical and neuroendocrine parameters were ana

Antidepressant- and anxiolytic-like activities of Rosmarinus officinalis extract in rodent models: Involvement of oxytocinergic system.

BACKGROUND: Oxytocin (OXT), a neuropeptide involved in mammal reproductive and prosocial behaviors, has been reported to interact with various stressor-provoked neurobiological changes, including neuroendocrine, neurotransmitter, and inflammatory processes. In view of disturbances in psychosocial relationships due to social isolation and physical distancing measures amid the COVID-19 pandemic, being one of the triggering factors for the recent rise in depression and anxiety, OXT is a potential candidate for a new antidepressant. METHODS: In this present study, we have aimed to investigate the

Effects of interpersonal violence-related post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) on mother and child diurnal cortisol rhythm and cortisol reactivity to a laboratory stressor involving separation.

Women who have experienced interpersonal violence (IPV) are at a higher risk to develop posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD), with dysregulation of the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis and impaired social behavior. Previously, we had reported impaired maternal sensitivity and increased difficulty in identifying emotions (i.e. alexithymia) among IPV-PTSD mothers. One of the aims of the present study was to examine maternal IPV-PTSD salivary cortisol levels diurnally and reactive to their child's distress in relation to maternal alexithymia. Given that mother-child interaction during in

Bacopa monniera (L.) Wettst ameliorates behavioral alterations and oxidative markers in sodium valproate induced autism in rats.

Early prenatal or post natal exposure to environmental insults such as valproic acid (VPA), thalidomide and ethanol could induce behavioral alterations similar to autistic symptoms. Bacopa monniera, a renowned plant in ayurvedic medicine is useful in several neurological disorders. The purpose of the present study was to evaluate the effect of B. monniera on VPA induced autism. On 12.5 day of gestation the female pregnant rats were divided into control and VPA treated groups. They were administered saline/VPA (600 mg/kg, i.p.) respectively and allowed to raise their own litters. Group I-male p

Lamotrigine treatment of pathologic skin picking: an open-label study.

BACKGROUND: Although pathologic skin picking is a relatively common behavior, treatment data are limited. We hypothesized that lamotrigine would reduce the symptoms of pathologic skin picking. METHOD: 24 subjects (19 women [79.2%]; mean +/-SD age = 34.1 +/- 12.2 years) with pathologic skin picking (based on DSM-IV criteria for other impulse control disorders) were treated in a 12-week open-label trial of lamotrigine as mono-therapy. Lamotrigine dosing ranged from 25 mg every other day to 300 mg/day. The primary outcome measure was time per day spent picking. Subjects were also assessed with m

Risk-taking and fairness among cocaine-dependent patients in dual diagnoses: Schizophrenia and Anti-Social Personality Disorder.

This study reports experimental results from a clinical sample of patients with a cocaine-related disorder and dual diagnosis: Schizophrenia and Anti-Social Personality Disorder. Both types of patients as well as a non-clinical group of students performed two incentivized decision-making tasks. In the first part of the experiment, they performed a lottery-choice task in order to elicit their degree of risk aversion. In the second part, they decided in two modified dictator games aimed at eliciting their aversion to advantageous and disadvantageous inequality. It is found that the Anti-Social P

Moderators and predictors of outcome in metacognitive and cognitive behavioural therapy for co-morbid anxiety disorders.

This study aimed to investigate whether two theoretically derived moderators of treatment, degree of worry and avoidance at pretreatment, moderated anxiety from pretreatment to post-treatment in a randomized controlled trial comparing metacognitive therapy and cognitive behavioural therapy. Personality problems, degree of co-morbidity, and demographic characteristics (work status and education) were also investigated. Seventy-four patients with a primary diagnosis of post-traumatic stress disorder, social phobia, or panic disorder with and without agoraphobia were analysed using multilevel mod

Prostitution as a Psychiatric Situation: Ethical Aspects.

This paper presents the morally controversial phenomenon of prostitution. As the basis for contemplating the prostitution issue the most important is revealing and understanding its primitive ethical root. For understanding its "soul", its essence, also important is comprehending sexual, "elementary thoughts" of mankind, through the relationship between prostitution and religious, social, political and spiritual life, and its nature as a reflection of the sexual-ethical concepts in different epochs and nations. We emphasize the connection between prostitution and psychiatry. Placing a special

Socioeconomic inequities patterns of multi-morbidity in early adolescence.

BACKGROUND: Multi-morbidity such as cumulating mental health, behavioral, and school difficulties (consumptions of alcohol, tobacco, cannabis, and hard drugs, obesity, depressive symptoms, suicide attempts, involvement in violence, and low school performance) is common in early adolescence and can be favored by a number of socioeconomic factors (gender, age, nationality, family structure, parents' education, father' occupation, and income). This study assessed the concurrent roles of various socioeconomic factors in multi-morbidity defined as cumulated number of difficulties (CD) which has bee

Prevalence of attention deficit hyperactivity disorder in schoolchildren in Athens, Greece. Association of ADHD subtypes with social and academic impairment.

The aim of this study was to explore the prevalence of attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and social and academic impairment in 6- to 11-year-old children residents of Athens, Greece. We screened 603 elementary schoolchildren following grades first to sixth. A two-stage screening process was employed including a standardized ADHD test for teachers and the Teacher Report Form (TRF). Among the 603 children, 36 (6.0%) met the study criteria for ADHD. The estimated prevalence was 8% for boys and 3.8% for girls. The most prevalent subtype of ADHD was the combined type (3.8%), followed

Developing a schedule to identify social communication difficulties and autism spectrum disorder in young children with visual impairment.

Available observational tools used in the identification of social communication difficulties and diagnosis of autism spectrum disorder (ASD) rely partly on visual behaviours and therefore may not be valid in children with visual impairment. A pilot observational instrument, the Visual Impairment and Social Communication Schedule (VISS), was developed to aid in identifying social communication difficulties and ASD in young children with visual impairment affected by congenital disorders of the peripheral visual system (disorders of the globe, retina, and anterior optic nerve). The VISS was adm

Inverse correlation between morning plasma cortisol levels and MMPI psychasthenia and depression scale scores in victims of mobbing with adjustment disorders.

OBJECTIVES: Evidence in the literature suggests stress-related changes of hypothalamus-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis in mobbing. We investigated the association between HPA activity and psychological profiles in mobbing, using a multidisciplinary approach. DESIGN: Forty-eight victims of mobbing were evaluated by a working group of the Departments of Occupational Medicine, Psychiatry and Internal Medicine. After an informed consent, a detailed occupational history, a psychiatric interview with Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory 2 (MMPI-2) administration and a blood sample (8:00 AM) for
