A proposed feedback loop of sexually transmitted diseases and sexual behavior: the Red Queen's Dilemma.

(Micro)organisms, such as bacteria, which cause sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) in humans are presented with an interesting ecological challenge. These microorganisms need humans to have sexual contact with each other in order for the microorganisms to spread to other hosts as well as to have subsequent generations of descendants. However, diseases tend to lower the sex drive and to render the host less sexually attractive. It is argued that, over time, selective advantages sculpted organisms which cause STDs to be minimally symptomatic and to indirectly increase the number of sexual part

Reduction of cortical volume in schizophrenia on magnetic resonance imaging.

The MRI scans of 48 schizophrenic patients, fulfilling RDC criteria, were compared to those of 34 healthy controls matched for age, ethnicity and parental social class. The volume of the frontal and anterior parietal lobes was significantly reduced in the schizophrenic group as a result of a selective decrease in cortical volume, with a corresponding increase in the volume of sulcal fluid. Reduction in the volume of the temporal grey matter was more marked on the right, but was not in excess of the loss of volume observed in other areas of the cortex. MRI abnormalities correlated poorly with c

The pressures of functional differentiation: education, homework, and schooled families.

The idea of functional differentiation is central to the framework which Luhmann developed for observing and analyzing the complexity of modern society. He analyzed its key social systems as functionally differentiated and specialized systems, such as the economy, politics, science, law, religion, or education. The modern family, however, is often defined as a multi-functional institution. It is seen to fulfill and integrate different functions, both for the adult members (emotional and psychological support, love) and for the children (education). Departing from Luhmann's framework, we examin

Advances on the application of the Human Brainnetome Atlas in obsessive-compulsive disorder.

Obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) is a chronic psychiatric disorder characterized by persistent intrusive thoughts and repetitive behaviors, significantly impacting patients' quality of life, social functioning, and overall well-being. Recent advances in neuroimaging techniques, particularly the development and application of the Human Brainnetome Atlas (BNA), have provided precise structural and functional subdivisions of the human brain, greatly enhancing the understanding of OCD neuropathology. This review comprehensively summarizes the latest applications of BNA in OCD research, specific

The nexus between accessible health communication and information resilience in diverse societies: the case of migrants and people with disability.

Trustworthy communication is crucial for building safe and informed societies, but for marginalised communities, disparate access to reliable information is an enduring challenge. I examined this problem in my qualitative investigation into health information access challenges facing migrants and people with disability during the SARS-CoV-2 (Covid-19) pandemic in Australia. Guided by a reflexive approach to Interpretive Thematic Analysis, I conducted 12 semi-structured interviews and two focus group discussions with service providers who supported these communities during the pandemic. Finding

Change process in psychotherapy for criminal offenders: a comprehensive review with content analysis.

The aim of this study is to systematically identify and synthesise the therapeutic components that facilitate recovery in criminal offenders undergoing psychotherapy or psychosocial interventions. A systematic review was conducted covering 163 studies published between 2000 and 2024, focusing on interventions such as cognitive-behavioral therapy, schema therapy, mentalisation-based treatment, and attachment-based approaches. A content analysis of these studies resulted in 7 core themes and 32 sub-components representing therapeutic components frequently emphasised in the literature. Structured

Group size shapes interactions in confined minimal active biological collectives.

We demonstrate that group size reshapes the effective interaction network in confined biological collectives. Using minimal groups of the shrimp Neocaridina davidi (N=2,3,4) as a representative nonequilibrium system, we reconstruct the asymmetric coupling matrix via an inverse asymmetric Ising model. This mapping is physically enabled by thigmotactic behavior, which restricts trajectories to a discrete decision space, allowing for a maximum-entropy description appropriate for steady states characterized by broken detailed balance. Our analysis reveals a structured progression with increasing g

Biomimetic Nanoparticles for Bone Regeneration: Construction Strategies and Therapeutic Mechanisms.

Bone tissue is the hardest and most dynamic connective tissue in the human body, and its integrity is essential for maintaining both mechanical support and physiological functions. However, with the aging population, the incidence of fractures, osteoporosis, and bone defects has risen significantly, severely impairing patients' quality of life and creating a substantial social burden. Although autologous or allogeneic bone grafts and metallic or non-metallic implants can partially restore bone defects, their long-term efficacy is constrained by donor shortages, immune rejection, and limited re

The cerebro-cerebellar system: Integrative roles in motor control, cognition, and neuropsychiatric disorders.

The cerebro-cerebellar system, a network of bidirectional loops between the cerebellum and cerebral cortex, is crucial for coordinating motor control, cognition, and emotion. Moving beyond its traditional role in motor coordination, contemporary research underscores the cerebellum's significant involvement in higher-order functions, including executive control, language, and social cognition. This review synthesizes current anatomical, functional, and clinical evidence to delineate the cerebellum's role in neuropsychiatric and neurodegenerative disorders such as schizophrenia, autism spectrum

The Indiana University Brain Health Program to deliver amyloid-targeted therapy to Alzheimer's disease patients.

INTRODUCTION: The Indiana University Brain Health Program was developed to support safe implementation of amyloid-targeting therapies (ATTs) for early Alzheimer's disease (AD). METHODS: We established Neurology Brain Health Navigators (neuroBHNs) to extend our Brain Health Navigator model into specialty care. NeuroBHNs pre-screen patients for ATT eligibility, coordinate biomarker and imaging evaluation, provide structured education, and guide treatment initiation and monitoring. The program includes a dedicated social worker and insurance pre-authorization specialist to streamline infusion ac

Unshackling our youth from the chains of substance abuse as disaster risk.

This study, a collaboration between the University of Limpopo and the Human Sciences Research Council (HSRC), aimed to generate baseline evidence to inform the development of an innovative performative arts intervention, designed to engage young people with scientific knowledge on substance use disorders (SUD), mental health, and behavioral risks. Using focus group discussions and key informant interviews across three communities in the Sekhukhune District, data were collected from youth, community members, and traditional governance structures. The findings reveal that generational poverty, h

From Displacement to Service: A Pharmacist's Reflections on Medication Education in Rural Northern Iraq.

Global displacement disrupts continuity of care and access to essential medicines, creating medication-related challenges in fragile health systems. In October 2024, I returned to Northern Iraq to provide medication education sessions across 7 rural villages serving internally displaced Assyrian communities and individuals with limited access to consistent pharmacy services. This commentary reflects on that experience and considers what it revealed about medication use in displacement-affected communities and the preparation of future pharmacists. The outreach demonstrated the importance of cu

Structural and psychosocial determinants of condom nonuse among people living with HIV: a qualitative approach.

This descriptive qualitative study analyzed the meanings attributed to condom use and nonuse among adults living with HIV who are receiving antiretroviral treatment in Mexico. Through in-depth interviews with forty-four adults, the narratives were situated from an ecological perspective, considering individual, relational, community, structural, and epidemiological factors. The findings show that the decision not to use condoms is mainly driven by subjective processes related to pleasure, perceptions of a partner's health, normalization of risk, and resignation in the face of the diagnosis. Is unilateral cerebellum sufficient? Insights from new cases of cerebellar agenesis and literature review.

The clinical manifestations of adult-acquired cerebellar diseases often surpass those of congenital cerebellar diseases, suggesting the significant role of the cerebellum in the developing brain. Moreover, emerging evidence from structural and functional magnetic resonance imaging indicates that the cerebellum is implicated not only in motor functions but also in non-motor domains such as cognition, emotion, and language. However, delineating the specific extent of cerebellar development required to prevent deficits in either motor or non-motor functions remains challenging. In this study, we

Discursive trends in New York Times coverage of Evusheld access: A case study in the social production of ignorance.

English-language reporting on the continuing difficulties in accessing Evusheld reflects the marginalization of immunocompromised people in discussions about the public policy response to Covid-19. Moreover, the lack of available data on global Evusheld access, particularly in low-income countries, has emerged as a key form of nonknowledge that must be redressed within public health research. Through examining how knowledge about domestic and global barriers to Evusheld access circulates, and does not circulate, within The New York Times, this paper identifies a case study of the social produc

Topical non-pharmacological treatment of eczema: an Italian consensus.

Eczematous diseases (contact dermatitis, atopic dermatitis, hand eczema) are among the most frequent findings in dermatological clinical practice. A large body of evidence exists on structural and functional skin barrier damage in eczematous diseases, and on the importance of interventions aimed to repair such damage. While there is substantial agreement on pharmacological treatment, more sparse data are available on role, indications and usefulness of topical non-pharmacological treatments, despite significant research and progress in the composition and technology of emollients, cleansers an

The hypothalamus in anxiety disorders.

Of all mental disorders, anxiety disorders are currently the strongest contributors to the global burden of disease, with 7.3% of the general population affected worldwide. The hypothalamus is crucial hub of a network of neural structures modulating fear conditioning and extinction and, as such, highly relevant to the pathophysiology of these conditions. Three hypothalamic systems have emerged as particularly relevant in this context. First, the oxytocin system is highly likely to be involved anxiety disorders and in particular in the cognitive and behavioral deficits pertaining to social anxi

Survival now versus survival later: immediate and delayed HIV risk assessment among young Jamaican men who have transactional sex with men.

This study explored the experiences of young Jamaican men who have sex with men who engaged in transactional sex as a result of homelessness, family neglect or limited financial resources. It further examined the circumstances that affect their immediate or delayed decisions around sexual risk and increased vulnerability for HIV infection. Barriers experienced when accessing condoms, healthcare, HIV testing and other prevention services are also described. Twenty in-depth interviews and one focus group with 10 participants in various parishes in Jamaica were conducted. Findings from this study

[Fetal pain and intrauterine analgesia/anesthesia--long-term pathologic effects, causes and alleviation of intrauterine pain].

The human fetus can suffer several presumably painful interventions perinatally and even before, during its intrauterine life. In the past years, scientific dispute concerning the existence of fetal pain and the need for its relief has expanded, and a heated social, political, religious, moral and philosophical debate has arisen, focusing mainly on the suffering experienced by the fetus during artificial abortion. In our two connected papers, medical scientific knowledge regarding fetal pain in the literature is reviewed. In the first article published in Orvosi Hetilap volume 150, issue 11, w
