The role of NOX inhibitors in neurodegenerative diseases.

Oxidative stress is a key player in both chronic and acute brain disease due to the higher metabolic demand of the brain. Among the producers of free radicals, NADPH-oxidase (NOX) is a major contributor to oxidative stress in neurological disorders. In the brain, the superoxide produced by NOX is mainly found in leukocytes. However, recent studies have reported that it can be found in several other cell types. NOX has been reported to regulate neuronal signaling, memory processing, and central cardiovascular homeostasis. However, overproduction of NOX can contribute to neurotoxicity, CNS degen

"I can't tell whether it's my hand": a pilot study of the neurophenomenology of body representation during the rubber hand illusion in trauma-related disorders.

BACKGROUND: Early traumatic experiences are thought to be causal factors in the development of trauma-related dissociative experiences, including depersonalization and derealization. The rubber hand illusion (RHI), a well-known paradigm that measures multi-sensorial integration of a rubber hand into one's own body representation, has been used to investigate alterations in the experience of body ownership and of body representation. Critically, however, it has never been studied in individuals with trauma-related disorders. OBJECTIVE: To investigate body representation distortions occurring i

Accrued reductions in heart rate following transcutaneous vagal nerve stimulation in adults with posttraumatic stress disorder.

BACKGROUND: Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) is a condition marked by chronic autonomic dysregulation, including heightened arousal and increased heart rate, contributing to a higher risk of cardiovascular disease (CVD). tcVNS has been shown in prior work to decrease arousal and reduce heart rate in participants with PTSD during stimulation and 2-3 min afterward. No studies have investigated effects of tcVNS on objective physiological markers such as heart rate over hour-long timescales. OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of active versus sham tcVNS on he

Psychologic Sequelae in Early Pregnancy Complications.

Early pregnancy complications, including miscarriage, ectopic pregnancies, and hyperemesis gravidarum, are common discomforts accounting for about 15% to 20% of all pregnancies. A proportion of women with early pregnancy complications will experience short- and long-term psychologic sequelae in the aftermath of pregnancy complications, including anxiety, depression, and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) which are the most commonly reported psychologic reactions. This review will focus on the course and impact of these psychologic sequelae in early pregnancy complications, and the noninvasi

Psychedelics and Mental Health: An Alternative Strategy to Treat Mental Impairments Triggered or Aggravated by COVID-19.

Despite the discovery of vaccines for COVID-19, one of the best security measures to contain the spread of the virus is social distancing and isolation. However, isolation might trigger negative mental outcomes, such as onset of a depressive and anxious condition, increased consumption of alcohol and drugs, relapse to substances of abuse, and even induce post-traumatic stress disorder. Interestingly, recent research with psychedelics suggests that when these substances are used in combination with psychotherapy, they may reduce these mental impairments. Nevertheless, scientists are still worki

Bilateral adrenal hemorrhage in a patient with myelodysplastic syndrome: value of MRI in the differential diagnosis.

Bilateral adrenal hemorrhage is a rare potentially life-threatening event that occurs either in traumatic or nontraumatic conditions. The diagnosis is often complicated by its nonspecific presentation and its tendency to intervene in stressful critical illnesses. Due to many disorders in platelet function, hemorrhage is a major cause of morbidity and mortality in patients affected by myeloproliferative diseases. We report here the computed tomography and magnetic resonance imaging findings of a rare case of bilateral adrenal hemorrhage in a patient with myelodysplastic syndrome, emphasizing th

Contributions of the endocannabinoid system to the neurobiology of emotions: Advances and perspectives.

The endocannabinoid system (ECS) has emerged as a central and multifaceted modulator of emotional physiology, playing a pivotal role in neurotransmission, neuroplasticity, and stress response regulation. This article provides an original and comprehensive review of the neurobiological mechanisms by which the ECS influences emotional activity, highlighting not only its involvement in psychiatric disorders such as depression, anxiety, and post-traumatic stress disorder, but also offering new perspectives on ECS dysregulation as a common pathophysiological factor in these conditions. The original

Minority stressors and psychological correlates of sexual distress among Black queer and heterosexual women.

Many women experience distress related to their sexual functioning. In fact, sexual distress is often the first sign of sexual functioning disorders. Yet, little is known about Black women's experiences of sexual distress. The purpose of this study is to explore the correlation between psychological factors (distress, post-traumatic stress disorder, perceived stress, and financial worry), minority stressors (superwoman schema and sexual objectification), and sexual distress among Black queer and heterosexual women. A cross-sectional survey was administered to 448 Black women aged 19-67, recrui

Neuropeptide Y: A stressful review.

Stress is defined as an adverse condition that disturbs the homeostasis of the body and activates adaptation responses. Among the many pathways and mediators involved, neuropeptide Y (NPY) stands out due to its unique stress-relieving, anxiolytic and neuroprotective properties. Stress exposure alters the biosynthesis of NPY in distinct brain regions, the magnitude and direction of this effect varying with the duration and type of stress. NPY is expressed in particular neurons of the brainstem, hypothalamus and limbic system, which explains why NPY has an impact on stress-related changes in emo

Sex-dependent effects of acute stress in adolescence or adulthood on appetitive motivation.

RATIONALE: Intensely stressful experiences can lead to long-lasting changes in appetitive and aversive behaviors. In humans, post-traumatic stress disorder increases the risk of comorbid appetitive disorders including addiction and obesity. We have previously shown that an acute stressful experience in adult male rats suppresses motivation for natural reward. OBJECTIVES: We examine the impact of sex and age on the effects of intense stress on action-based (instrumental) and stimulus-based (Pavlovian) motivation for natural reward (food). METHODS: Rats received 15 unsignaled footshocks (stres

Assessing relations between PTSD's dysphoria and reexperiencing factors and dimensions of rumination.

The purpose of the present study was to investigate the relations between posttraumatic stress disorder's (PTSD) dysphoria and reexperiencing factors and underlying dimensions of rumination. 304 trauma-exposed primary care patients were administered the Stressful Life Events Screening Questionnaire, PTSD Symptom Scale based on their worst traumatic event, and Ruminative Thought Style Questionnaire (RTSQ). Confirmatory factor analyses (CFAs) were conducted to determine the dysphoria and reexperiencing factors' relationships with the four factors of rumination. Results revealed that both the dys

Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD) and Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD): Clinical Fingerprints of the Comorbidity.

BACKGROUND: Obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) frequently co-occurs with autism spectrum disorder (ASD), but the prevalence and clinical correlates of this comorbidity remain incompletely understood. METHODS: We examined a clinical sample of 603 patients with a primary diagnosis of OCD, of whom 149 (24.7%) presented with comorbid ASD. Sociodemographic variables, clinical characteristics, comorbidities, and obsessive-compulsive symptom dimensions were compared between patients with and without ASD. RESULTS: Patients with OCD + ASD reported an earlier onset of both obsessive-compulsive sympto

Investigating the Use of Large Language Models for the Detection of Trauma-Related Symptoms: An Exploratory Study Using Trauma Narratives.

This study explores whether Large Language Models (LLMs) can analyze brief trauma narratives in ways that align with self-reported trauma-related symptoms and probable Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) based on a recommended cut-off. We investigate Gemini 1.5 Pro and GPT-4o's ability to score 1000 trauma narratives for severity of PTSD symptoms comparing various prompting strategies. Prompts ranged from basic instructions requesting a binary or graded (5-point) inference based solely on the narrative, to more complex prompts incorporating demographic information (age, gender), time since t

Witnessing trauma in the digital era: Uncensored media associates with posttraumatic stress in perinatal women.

BACKGROUND: Digital media increasingly shape how populations encounter large-scale traumatic events, enabling real-time exposure to uncensored graphic content among individuals not directly exposed. However, whether this form of indirect exposure is associated with posttraumatic stress responses, particularly following collective trauma, remains poorly understood. METHODS: We studied 630 perinatal women within the first months following the October 7, 2023, attacks and the Israel-Hamas War, none of whom were directly exposed to the attacks. Participants were assessed for posttraumatic stress
