Roles of sialoglycans in vertebrate development.

In vertebrates, sialic acids are the terminal sugars of many glycan structures presented by glycolipids, glycoproteins and proteoglycans on the cell surface, in the extracellular matrix, and in bodily fluids. Due to their negative charge, they shape molecular interactions between cells as well as interactions with and within the microenvironment. Strategies to study the numerous and diverse functions of sialoglycans in health and disease range from global sialic acid deletions to the targeting of specific sialoglycan biosynthesis pathways in individual cell types or organs. Some of these appro

Arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi reshape carbon-nitrogen balance and metabolism in nitrogen-limited escarole (Cichorium endivia L.).

Nitrogen nutrition remains a major challenge for sustainable crop production, particularly under the current need to reduce fertilizer inputs. This study evaluated whether inoculation with arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) improves the physiological, nutritional, and metabolic performance of escarole (Cichorium endivia L.) plants under nitrogen-limited conditions. Escarole plants were grown under two nitrogen regimes, full nitrogen supply and 25% of the optimal nitrogen concentration, either inoculated or non-inoculated with Rhizophagus irregularis. Plant growth, mineral composition, soluble

Rol-Transformed Kalanchoë Shows Altered Root Allocation and Photosynthetic Responses to Nitrogen Deficiency.

Ri/rol transformation by Rhizobium rhizogenes is well known to alter plant architecture, including shoot compactness, branching and root development. However, its significance for plant responses to nitrogen limitation remains unclear. Here, we investigated developmental, physiological and hormonal responses of an interspecific Kalanchoë laciniata × K. blossfeldiana hybrid to nitrogen deficiency using complementary pot and hydroponic experiments. Nitrogen deficiency strongly reduced leaf area and total biomass in both wild-type (WT) and rol-transformed (Rol) plants. Nevertheless, rol transform

Characterization of posttranslational modification in metabolic dysfunction-associated steatohepatitis: acetylation, lactylation, and phosphorylation.

In metabolic dysfunction-associated steatohepatitis (MASH), abnormalities in posttranslational modification (PTM) are both a consequence of the pathological process and a driving force for disease progression. Therefore, this study intends to characterize the PTM features (acetylation, lactylation, and phosphorylation) of MASH, which will provide a crucial theoretical basis for the diagnosis and development of new targets for MASH. In this study, protein/modification profiles of clinical liver tissues from Normal and MASH were analyzed by LC-MS to identify differentially expressed proteins (DE

Longitudinal Dietary Intake of Young People With a First Episode of Psychosis From the Time of Presentation to Six Months Follow-Up.

BACKGROUND: Antipsychotic medications stimulate appetite and weight gain, contributing to high obesity rates in people with psychotic disorders. It is unknown if these dietary effects habituate over time. This study aimed to determine the dietary intake of young people with a first-episode psychosis at the time of presentation and at three- and six-months of follow-up. METHODS: We assessed dietary patterns at baseline, 3 months, and 6 months in participants diagnosed with first-episode psychosis who had minimal prior antipsychotic exposure. We analysed data from the PHAstER randomised-control

Understanding Colitis Progression and Treatment Response in Murine and Canine Models with Raman Metabolic Profiling and Proteomics.

Ulcerative colitis is a chronic inflammatory condition of the gastrointestinal tract with a rising global prevalence that underscores the urgent need for noninvasive approaches to monitor disease progression and treatment response. Recent evidence links metabolic alterations in colitis to disease severity, suggesting that metabolic profiling is a promising biomarker strategy. Here, we employed Raman spectroscopy (RS) as a sensitive, label-free approach to profiling serum and tissue metabolomes in murine and canine models of colitis. We identified 16 statistically significant metabolites in the

Vanillin attenuates glycation associated modifications and partially restores iron binding and release properties in human serum transferrin: insights from biophysical and computational studies.

Protein glycation, especially under hyperglycemic conditions observed during diabetes, results in the formation of advanced glycation endproducts (AGEs) as a result of reaction between reducing sugars or dicarbonyls and free amino groups of proteins. The presence of AGEs and the accompanied oxidative stress contribute to the progression and severity of diabetic complications. Transferrin, the major serum glycoprotein involved in transport of iron between cellular sites of absorption and utilization undergoes variable glycation in diabetic patients and in vitro conditions. Glycated transferrin

Cold acclimation reprograms the flavor metabolome of fresh tea leaves to enhance sensory quality: Insights from metabolomics, GC-O, and transcriptomics.

The enhanced sensory quality of early spring tea is empirically associated with pre-harvest cold exposure, yet the chemical and mechanistic basis for this enhancement requires further clarification. In this study, we investigated the metabolic changes in tea leaves under cold acclimation (4/0 °C) compared to mild cooling (15/11 °C) using metabolomics, HS-SPME/GC × GC-Q-TOF-MS, gas chromatography-olfactometry (GC-O), and transcriptomic analyses. Results indicated that cold acclimation induced the accumulation of key non-volatile tastants, notably soluble sugars and γ-aminobutyric acid (GABA), d

Red-blue monochromatic and composite light withering modulates flavor and aroma profiles of white tea: A combined GC-IMS, E-nose, HPLC and sensory analysis.

White tea production is highly dependent on withering conditions, with traditional methods relying on natural sunlight, which is often hindered by inclement weather in tea-growing regions. Artificial light withering offers a promising solution to enhance tea quality by modulating metabolic pathways. This study investigated the effects of monochromatic (red and blue) and composite red-blue light (RB1:1, RB1:3, RB3:1) withering on the sensory characteristics, chemical composition, and volatile compounds of white tea, compared to indoor natural withering (CK). The light treatments were applied du

Comparative genomics and taxonomic characterization of Streptomyces diversicolor sp. nov.: a novel species exhibiting intraspecific genomic divergence and biotechnological potential.

Two actinomycete strains, designated SSUT88AT and SSUT88R, were isolated from distinct soil samples in Nakhon Ratchasima, Thailand. While both belong the genus Streptomyces, they exhibited phenotypic divergence; strain SSUT88AT produced yellowish-white mycelia with potent antimicrobial activity against methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA), whereas SSUT88R produced red colonies with limited inhibitory effects. Genomic analyses confirmed the isolates are conspecific, sharing high ANI (99.99%) and dDDH (99.6%) values, yet exhibiting genomic divergence; the 11.2 Mb genome of SSUT88AT

Essential Oral Single Nutritional Therapy Products for Inherited Metabolic Diseases: Evidence and Consensus Assessment Using a Modified Delphi Method.

Nutritional therapy is critical in managing inherited metabolic diseases (IMDs), and includes specialized diets and single nutritional therapy products (sNTPs) such as vitamins, cofactors, and amino acids. Many sNTPs function as medicines, but are regulated as food (e.g., food supplements), which can limit access, reimbursement, and consistent supply. Essential medicines, as defined by World Health Organization (WHO), meet key healthcare needs and must be available, affordable, and quality-assured. Some sNTPs might meet this threshold, supporting their potential inclusion in the WHO essential

SiO2@CuO Nanozyme Reinforces Plant-Microbiome Synergies for Simultaneous Yield Enhancement, Nutritional Fortification, and a Beneficial Soil Legacy.

Plant associated microbes play pivotal role in promoting host fitness and health. However, modern agricultural practices, such as agrochemicals use and domestication are eroding plant-microbe partnership. Here, we show that nanoenabled seed priming strengthens plant-microbe interactions, enhancing the plant holobiont performance. We found that SiO2@CuO nanozymes (NZs) with peroxidase (POD)-like activities, as seed priming agent, initiate earlier and stronger seed respiration and boost exudates release (sugars, amino acids, and fatty acids), creating a nutrient-rich and transiently hypoxic sper
