Health awareness correlates with whole-brain gray matter volume in healthy adults.

As populations continue to age, interest in brain health is increasing. However, little is known about the relationship between health awareness and brain health in healthy adults. In this study, psychological questionnaire data from 184 participants were analyzed using multiple regression, with brain structural measures obtained by MRI as the dependent variables. Health awareness was positively associated with gray matter volume (GMV) in the whole brain, temporal lobe, and occipital lobe, after controlling for sex, age, education, and BMI. These associations remained significant after correct

[A case of young woman with intracranial gumma developed within 1 year after Treponema pallidum infection].

A 17-years-old woman visited the hospital due to convulsions. T2-weighted images showed high intensity areas in right temporal lobe and left frontal lobe. Enhanced T1-weighted images showed mass-like lesions on the dura mater. Based on mononuclear pleocytosis and a reactive fluorescent treponemal antibody-absorption test in the cerebrospinal fluid, neurosyphilis and intracranial gumma were diagnosed, and antibiotic therapy was initiated. After treatments, the high intensity areas improved, and she had no recurrence of symptoms or MRI images. Intracranial gumma usually develops in tertiary syph

Headache attack followed by rapid disease progression in pediatric moyamoya disease--how should we manage it?

CASE REPORT: A 4-year-old female was presented at our hospital with frequent right frontal headache attack. She was diagnosed with moyamoya disease and was conservatively followed up. One year later, the frequency of headache gradually decreased. However, follow-up MR imaging revealed that the disease stage markedly progressed in the right side and cerebral infarction occurred in the temporal lobe with atrophy of the right frontal lobe. She underwent direct and indirect revascularization on the right side. CONCLUSION: Aware of this case, we would like to emphasize that headache may be one sub

[Amnestic syndrome after right temporo-occipital subcortical hemorrhage].

A case of right temporo-occipital subcortical hemorrhage with amnestic syndrome was reported. A 65-year-old woman presented with visual disturbance and headache. CT and MRI demonstrated a hemorrhagic lesion in the right occipital lobe involving parahippocampal gyrus. Neurological examination on admission revealed left homonymous hemianopsia and anterograde and retrograde amnesia. Neuropsychological examination revealed marked recent memory disturbance, but she had visual retention and verbal retention, and her value in WAIS (Wechsler Adult Intelligence Scale) was normal. After 40 days, she was

Parietal thickness predicts middle temporal area (V5) motion responses in 7-year-old children born very preterm.

Very preterm birth has been associated with altered brain development and impaired global motion processing within the dorsal visual stream. We explored whether cortical thickness in occipital and parietal regions predicted global motion processing in 7-year-old children born very preterm. Structural magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) measures were successfully computed for 99 children, motion coherence thresholds were evaluated in 85 participants and functional MRI blood oxygen level-dependent (BOLD) percent signal change in the primary visual cortex (V1) and/or middle temporal area (V5) was qu

Continuous Theta Burst Stimulation over Right Temporoparietal Junction Reduces Prosocial Intertemporal Choice in Small but Not Large Monetary Amounts.

As social beings, people need to assist others in making intertemporal choices. The right temporoparietal junction (rTPJ) plays a crucial role in influencing prosocial behavior. Nevertheless, it remains unclear whether and how rTPJ modulates self-other intertemporal decision-making. In the current study, we mainly employed temporal social balance (i.e., "Self immediate - Self delay" and "Other immediate - Other delay" conditions) and temporal social imbalance (i.e., "Self immediate - Other delay" and "Self delay - Other immediate" conditions), with the identity of "Other" being a stranger. Online HD-tRNS Over the Right Temporoparietal Junction Modulates Social Inference But Not Motor Coordination.

Social interactions are fundamental to human cognition, with the right temporoparietal junction (rTPJ) playing a key role in integrating motor coordination and social inference. While transcranial random noise stimulation (tRNS) is a promising technique for modulating cortical excitability in real time, its effect on dynamic social processes remains largely unexplored. This study applied high-definition tRNS (HD-tRNS) over the rTPJ during an interactive task to modulate motor coordination and social inference. Eighty neurotypical adults (49 female) were equally distributed across two experimen

Control of working memory by phase-amplitude coupling of human hippocampal neurons.

Retaining information in working memory is a demanding process that relies on cognitive control to protect memoranda-specific persistent activity from interference1,2. However, how cognitive control regulates working memory storage is unclear. Here we show that interactions of frontal control and hippocampal persistent activity are coordinated by theta-gamma phase-amplitude coupling (TG-PAC). We recorded single neurons in the human medial temporal and frontal lobe while patients maintained multiple items in their working memory. In the hippocampus, TG-PAC was indicative of working memory load

Cerebellum and social abilities: A structural and functional connectivity study in a transdiagnostic sample.

The cerebellum has been involved in social abilities and autism. Given that the cerebellum is connected to the cortex via the cerebello-thalamo-cortical loop, the connectivity between the cerebellum and cortical regions involved in social interactions, that is, the right temporo-parietal junction (rTPJ) has been studied in individuals with autism, who suffer from prototypical deficits in social abilities. However, existing studies with small samples of categorical, case-control comparisons have yielded inconsistent results due to the inherent heterogeneity of autism, suggesting that investigat

Targeting auditory verbal hallucinations in schizophrenia: effective connectivity changes induced by low-frequency rTMS.

Low-frequency repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) has emerged as an effective intervention for alleviating symptoms of psychiatric disorders, particularly schizophrenia characterized by persistent auditory verbal hallucinations (AVH). However, the underlying mechanism of its action remain elusive. This study employed a randomized controlled design to investigate the impact of low-frequency rTMS on the neural connectivity at the stimulate site, specifically left temporoparietal junction (TPJ), in schizophrenia patients with suffering from AVH. Using Dynamic Causal Modeling (DCM)

Dissociation of reading and naming in ventral occipitotemporal cortex.

Lesions in the language-dominant ventral occipitotemporal cortex (vOTC) can result in selective impairment of either reading or naming, resulting in alexia or anomia. Yet, functional imaging studies that show differential activation for naming and reading do not reveal activity exclusively tuned to one of these inputs. To resolve this dissonance in the functional architecture of the vOTC, we used focused stimulation to the vOTC in 49 adult patients during reading and naming, and generated a population-level, probabilistic map to evaluate if reading and naming are clearly dissociable within ind

Orthographic and phonological processing in the left ventral occipitotemporal cortex during Chinese word reading.

The left ventral occipitotemporal cortex (lvOT) has been consistently identified as a crucial structure in word reading, and its function varies across subregions. Nevertheless, the specific function of the lvOT and its subregions remains controversial because the obvious grapheme-to-phoneme correspondence rules of alphabetic languages make it difficult to disentangle the contributions of orthography and phonology to neural activations. To explore information processing in lvOT subregions, the present study manipulated the orthography and phonology in a factorial design and used the fMRI rapid

Association Between Brain Volumes and Patterns of Physical Activity in Community-Dwelling Older Adults.

BACKGROUND: Larger brain volumes are often associated with more free-living physical activity (PA) in cognitively normal older adults. Yet, whether greater brain volumes are associated with more favorable (less fragmented) PA patterns, and whether this association is stronger than with total PA, remains unknown. METHODS: Brain magnetic resonance imaging and wrist-worn accelerometer data were collected in 301 participants (mean age = 77 [SD = 7] years, 59% women) enrolled in the Baltimore Longitudinal Study of Aging. Linear regression models were fit to examine whether brain volumes (cc) were

Emergence of a compositional neural code for written words: Recycling of a convolutional neural network for reading.

The visual word form area (VWFA) is a region of human inferotemporal cortex that emerges at a fixed location in the occipitotemporal cortex during reading acquisition and systematically responds to written words in literate individuals. According to the neuronal recycling hypothesis, this region arises through the repurposing, for letter recognition, of a subpart of the ventral visual pathway initially involved in face and object recognition. Furthermore, according to the biased connectivity hypothesis, its reproducible localization is due to preexisting connections from this subregion to area

Facemasks and face recognition: Potential impact on synaptic plasticity.

Visual recognition of facial expression modulates our social interactions. Compelling experimental evidence indicates that face conveys plenty of information that are fundamental for humans to interact. These are encoded at neural level in specific cortical and subcortical brain regions through activity- and experience-dependent synaptic plasticity processes. The current pandemic, due to the spread of SARS-CoV-2 infection, is causing relevant social and psychological detrimental effects. The institutional recommendations on physical distancing, namely social distancing and wearing of facemasks

Microglial burden, activation and dystrophy patterns in frontotemporal lobar degeneration.

BACKGROUND: Microglial dysfunction is implicated in frontotemporal lobar degeneration (FTLD). Although studies have reported excessive microglial activation or senescence (dystrophy) in Alzheimer's disease (AD), few have explored this in FTLD. We examined regional patterns of microglial burden, activation and dystrophy in sporadic and genetic FTLD, sporadic AD and controls. METHODS: Immunohistochemistry was performed in frontal and temporal grey and white matter from 50 pathologically confirmed FTLD cases (31 sporadic, 19 genetic: 20 FTLD-tau, 26 FTLD-TDP, four FTLD-FUS), five AD cases and fi

Spontaneous spatial navigation circuitry in schizophrenia spectrum disorders.

Spatial memory is core to wayfinding and everyday memory. Interestingly, individuals with schizophrenia using spatial navigation strategies (cognitive mapping) are impaired, whereas those using response-based (e.g., single-landmark) strategies show relatively intact memory performance. We observed abnormal brain communication in schizophrenia participants who used a spatial strategy during a virtual-reality navigation task, particularly between temporal and frontal brain regions. In contrast, schizophrenia participants using a response strategy recruited similar brain systems to healthy partic

Reduced grey matter volume in frontal and temporal areas in depression: contributions from voxel-based morphometry study.

OBJECTIVE: The aim of the current study was to examine whether and to what extent mood disorders, comprising major depression and bipolar disorder, are accompanied by structural changes in the brain as measured using voxel-based morphometry (VBM). METHODS: We performed a VBM study using a 3Т MRI system (GE Discovery 750w) in patients with mood disorders (n=50), namely, 39 with major depression and 11 with bipolar disorder compared to 42 age-, sex- and education-matched healthy controls. RESULTS: Our results show that depression was associated with significant decreases in grey matter (GM) vo

When morality opposes the law: An fMRI investigation into punishment judgments for crimes with good intentions.

In judicial practice, morally right but legally wrong instances usually pose significant challenges for legal decision makers. To examine the cognitive and neural foundations of legal judgments in criminal cases involving apparent moral conflicts, we scanned 30 female participants during punishment judgments for crimes committed with good intentions. The behavioral results confirmed that moral acceptability was significantly correlated with the punishment ratings only in the good-intentioned crimes. The fMRI data mainly revealed that the right temporoparietal junction (rTPJ) plays special role
