Sphingolipids serve an important role as effector molecules in signaling pathways bearing on apoptosis and cell survival. The balance between proapoptotic ceramide and prosurvival sphingosine-1-phosphate, sometimes termed the "sphingolipid rheostat," has received particular attention. Less well studied is the role of the follicular lymphoma variant translocation 1 (FVT1) gene, which was identified through its involvement in an atypical follicular lymphoma translocation and which encodes an enzyme in the synthetic pathway of ceramide. We investigated the expression of FVT1 in a variety of B-cel

INTRODUCTION: The quantity of lymphocytes in adenoid and their cooperation in immunological processes is dependent on proliferation process and their migration to the effectory places. The most important process provide for equilibrium between lymphocytes of tonsils is apopotosis. Special meaning in induction this process has Bcl-2 family proteins with can be divided into pro-apoptotic and anti-apoptotic. An investigation was executed in hypertrophied adenoids with or without otitis media with effusion.

Human vascular adhesion protein-1 (VAP-1) is a homodimeric 170-kDa sialoglycoprotein that is expressed on the surface of endothelial cells and functions as a semicarbazide-sensitive amine oxidase and as an adhesion molecule. Blockade of VAP-1 has been shown to reduce leukocyte adhesion and transmigration in in vivo and in vitro models, suggesting that VAP-1 is a potential target for anti-inflammatory therapy. In this study we have constructed mouse-human chimeric antibodies by genetic engineering in order to circumvent the potential problems involved in using murine antibodies in man. Our chim

Psoriasis is a chronic inflammatory skin disease that is known to have a strong genetic predisposition. Several psoriasis-susceptibility loci have been previously found through genomic scans. Of these, psoriasis-susceptibility region 1 (PSORS1) on chromosome 6p21 remains the most consistently identified region across populations with the highest association with disease. STG is a gene that was previously isolated from rhesus monkey taste buds, and its ortholog in humans was found to be part of the cluster of genes in PSORS1, which is telomeric to HLA-C. Upon characterization of STG, we identif

The ATP-binding cassette transporter A1 (ABCA1) is involved in the regulation of cholesterol efflux from cells. Mutations in ABCA1 give rise to familial high-density lipoprotein (HDL) deficiency and Tangier disease, which is characterized by very low levels of HDL in plasma and cholesteryl ester accumulation in tonsils and other reticuloendothelial cells. The mechanism of action of ABCA1 is still unclear, but requires the transfer of phospholipid and cholesterol to apolipoprotein A1 bound by or close to the transporter. An important factor in the regulation of ABCA1 is cholesterol itself, whic

This report describes two cases of Chiari Malformation Type I (Chiari-I) in fighter pilots of the Turkish Air Force. Chiari-I is a congenital malformation characterized by herniation of cerebellar tonsils through the foramen magnum. Patients have symptoms and signs related to dysfunction of the brainstem, spinal cord, and cerebellum. They generally are symptomatic in the earlier years of life. However, asymptomatic cases can eventually become symptomatic in later years. Symptoms can be provoked by increasing intracranial pressure (Valsalva or straining). We report on two pilots with Chiari-I m

Herein we describe the isolation of a cDNA encoding a novel human Toll-like receptor (hTLR) that we term hTLR10. Human TLR10 contains 811 amino acid residues. Deduced amino acid sequence analysis reveals that like the other known hTLRs (hTLR1-9) it is characterized by a signal peptide followed by multiple leucine-rich repeats (LRRs), a cysteine-rich domain, a transmembrane sequence and a cytoplasmic domain homologous to that of the human interleukin-1 receptor. Phylogenetic analysis indicates that among all the hTLRs, hTLR10 is most closely related to hTLR1 and hTLR6; the overall amino acid id

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the advantage of cerebellomedullary fissure approach to resect the space occupying lesion in the fourth ventricle region and at the back of pons and to discuss the microsurgical skills.
METHODS: The craniotomy is through the posterior fossa. To maximize the width of exposure, a long skin incision is made from the occipital protuberance down to the C4-5 level, and a free occipital bone flap is turned. The tonsils of cerebellum are reached by opening the tonsillovermian fissure and then moved upward so as to expose the operating field. Neoplasm in the fourth ventricle

The maxillary nerve gives sensory innervation to all structures in and around the maxillary bone and the midfacial region including the skin of the midfacial regions, the lower eyelid, side of nose, and upper lip; the mucous membrane of the nasopharynx, maxillary sinus, soft palate, palatine tonsil, roof of the mouth, the maxillary gingivae, and maxillary teeth. This vast and complex division of the trigeminal nerve is intimately associated with many sources of orofacial pain, often mimicking maxillary sinus and/or temporomandibular joint involvement. For those who choose to treat patients suf

A 210kDa protein named GANP is upregulated in germinal center (GC)-B cells in the spleen of antigen-immunized mouse. We studied a human ganp gene (hganp) encoding a putative polypeptide of 1980 amino acids. The carboxyl-terminal 721-amino-acid sequence of hGANP is identical to Map80, that is presumably generated by alternative splicing of hganp/Map80 gene. The genomic segment carrying hganp and Map80 genes was isolated, and the chromosomal location was determined on 21q22.3. Northern blot analysis with RNAs from various organs demonstrated a single band of 7kb hganp mRNA, which suggests a pref

An isolate of Newcastle disease virus obtained from a guinea fowl was characterized as a viscerotropic velogenic strain based upon pathogenicity index studies. Following inoculation of the viral isolate oronasally into 3-week-old chickens, clinical signs appeared after an incubation period of 4-5 days and included dullness, depression, dyspnoea, diarrhoea and leg paralysis. The virus caused a mortality of 56% with haemorrhages at the tip of the glands of the proventriculus and caecal tonsil. Histopathological changes were prominent in the lymphoid organs, being characterized by depletion, dege

CD5 is expressed by most T cells and a subset of B cells. Human CD5 positive B cells are present in fetal lymphoid tissue, their frequency decreasing with fetal age. In adult human tissues, CD5 positive B cells have been reported to be present in the germinal centre and mantle zone. Malignancies of CD5 positive B cells include mantle cell lymphoma and chronic lymphocytic leukemia. This report describes an immunohistochemical staining technique used to visualise the expression of CD5 by B cells in human fetal intestine, tonsil, and mantle cell lymphoma. M cells are distinctive epithelial cells that occur only in the follicle-associated epithelia that overlie organized mucosa-associated lymphoid tissues. They are structurally and functionally specialized for transepithelial transport, delivering foreign antigens and microorganisms to organized lymphoid tissues within the mucosae of the small and large intestines, tonsils and adenoids, and airways. M cell transport is a double-edged sword: Certain pathogens exploit the features of M cells that are intended to promote uptake for the purpose of immunological sampling. Eludication of the molecular

The NADase activity of the ectoenzyme CD38 on intact cells has been measured by a fluorometric assay using epsilon-NAD as a substrate. The enzyme activity was tested in the Daudi cell line, PHA-activated blasts and peripheral blood and tonsil lymphocytes from HIV-1-negative and -positive individuals. There was a direct correlation in all cells tested between the number of cell surface CD38 molecules added in the assay and the NADase activity of the same cells expressed as fluorescent units. This indicates that CD38 is expressed in its fully active form when up-regulated on T cells from HIV-1-i

The human polyomavirus JCV lytically infects oligodendrocytes of immunosuppressed individuals leading to the fatal demyelinating disease termed progressive multifocal leukoencephalopathy (PML). Dementia, hemiparesis, and hemianopsia are the predominant presenting signs of PML. Asymptomatic JCV infection is common worldwide with approximately 80% of adults testing positive for JCV antibodies. In addition to the brain, JCV has been shown to infect tonsil, lymphoid, bone marrow, and kidney tissues. Viral variants, classified according to the nucleotide sequences of their regulatory regions, are b

Tonsillectomy was performed on 10 adult sleep apnea patients (five males, five females; average age, 39 years old; average body mass index, 24.8 kg/m2). Tonsillectomy alone was indicated if tonsillar hypertrophy was moderate to severe and the length of the soft palate was less than 35 mm according to cephalometry. Remarkable improvements were observed in all cases following surgery. The average weight of the resected tonsils was 11 g. The patients demonstrated a preoperative apnea + hypopnea index (AHI) of 14.4/h. This decreased to 2.9/h postoperatively. The intraesophageal pressure change imp
