Examination of a patient with peripheral neuropathy starts with careful questioning of the patient about the history of symptoms and signs and of a possible familial disorder. Several steps are required during examination of the patient with peripheral neuropathy: first the pattern of neuropathy and site of lesions should be determined: roots, nerve trunks, focal, multifocal, length-dependent generalized polyneuropathy, the type of nerve fibers predominantly affected, the association with trophic changes and autonomic dysfunction, the course of the disease ranging from acute inflammatory polyn

Periodontal diseases, some of the most common infectious diseases seen in humans, are characterized by gingival inflammation, as well as loss of connective tissue and bone from around the roots of the teeth, which leads to eventual tooth exfoliation. In the past decade, the association of periodontal diseases with the development of systemic diseases has received increasing attention. Although a number of studies have presented evidence of close relationships between periodontal and systemic diseases, the majority of findings are limited to epidemiological studies, while the etiological detail

Cementum is a highly specialized connective tissue that covers tooth roots. The only cementum-specific protein described to date is the cementum attachment protein (CAP). A putative sequence for CAP was established from a cDNA clone isolated from a human cementifying fibroma cDNA library. This sequence overlaps with a phosphatase-like protein in muscle termed the protein-tyrosine phosphatase-like member A (PTPLA). To clarify the nature of CAP/PTPLA, we cloned the homologous rat protein and determined its sequence. The rat protein shared 94% sequence identity with the human protein. On Northern

Because the pulp tissue extirpated during root canal procedures might serve as a valuable resource with which to assess underlying mechanisms of persistent pain, we sought to determine whether standard Western blotting techniques could be used to quantify neural proteins in pulp extirpated from teeth with irreversible pulpitis. Pulp harvested from healthy intact teeth extracted for orthodontic reasons was used for comparison. The neural marker PGP9.5 was detectable in all samples tested. A membrane enrichment protocol enabled detection of even low abundance, high molecular weight proteins such

BACKGROUND: Nasopalatine duct cyst is a developmental, nonodontogenic cyst of jaw.
CASE REPORT: We presented a 46-year-old male with nasopalatine duct cyst. The clinical examination revealed fluctuant swellings of the anterior palate, without pain, 4-5 cm in diametar. Both radiographs showed the presence of an ovoid radiolucency located in the midline of the maxilla between the roots of central maxillary incisor teeth with peripheral sclerosis, 25 x 35 cm in diametar. Surgical treatment was performed under local anaesthesia (Articainchloridum 4% - 3M ESPE) using a palatine approach. Postopera

Previous work has indicated that the enamel-related periodontium (ERP) has a role in the eruptive process of the rat lower incisor. By combining partial damage of this tissue with resection of the odontogenic organ, we examined the effect of the damage on subsequent incisor eruption. The connective tissue of the enamel-related periodontium was regenerated in less than 2 weeks, showing morphology close to normal. The injured part of the enamel organ was neither regenerated nor repaired, and a cement-like tissue, continuous with the true acellular cement, was formed on the denuded enamel. Before

Amelogenesis imperfecta (AI) is a hereditary disorder resulting in generalized defects in the enamel. The case reported here is of a seven-year-old male child with yellow color of all his teeth. Two of his primary molars were extracted due to dental abscess with advanced root resorption. Histologically hypoplastic enamel layer, positively birefringent, generalized pitting, roughness with irregular general cracked borders were observed. Scanning electron microscope, revealed extensive irregular, disorganized rough superficial enamel layer. The enamel was irregularly decussate with filamentous p

INTRODUCTION: In early stages of cracked teeth, pulpal inflammation is considered reversible. Cracked teeth with retained pulp vitality demonstrate higher survival rates whereas root canal treatment (RCT) negatively influences survival outcomes. The clinical challenge lies in discerning when RCT is required. This study aimed to develop and validate machine learning models for predicting pulp survival in cracked teeth with reversible pulpitis and investigating associations between patient- and tooth-related variables and treatment outcomes.
METHODS: Data from 569 patients with 593 cracked teet

OBJECTIVES: Mouse incisor mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) have self-renewal ability and osteo/odontogenic differentiation potential. However, the mechanism controlling the continuous self-renewal and osteo/odontogenic differentiation of mouse incisor MSCs remains unclear. Special AT-rich sequence-binding protein 2 (SATB2) positively regulates craniofacial patterning, bone development and regeneration, whereas SATB2 deletion or mutation leads to craniomaxillofacial dysplasia and delayed tooth and root development, similar to bone morphogenetic protein (BMP) loss-of-function phenotypes. However, t

OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to investigate the effect of pre-applied orthodontic force on the regeneration of periodontal ligament (PDL) tissues and the underlying mechanisms in tooth replantation.
METHODS: Orthodontic force (50 cN) was applied to the left maxillary first molars of 7-week-old male Sprague-Dawley rats (n = 32); the right maxillary first molars were left untreated to serve as the control group. After 7 days, the first molars on both sides were fully luxated and were immediately replanted in their original sockets. To verify the effects of the pre-applied orthodontic force, we a

Mechanical removal of microbial biofilm dental plaque from tooth surfaces is important for treatment of periodontal diseases. However, the effectiveness of conventional scaling and root planing (SRP) is affected by the local conditions and residual bacteria which may affect the healing process. We performed a randomized clinical trial to test our hypothesis that adjunctive antimicrobial photodynamic therapy (aPDT) plus SRP has significant effect compared with SRP alone, which can last for 1 year. The study included 136 sites in 16 patients with previously untreated chronic periodontitis, at le

Dental caries is one of the most prevalent infectious diseases in the United States, affecting approximately 80% of children and the majority of adults. Dental caries may lead to endodontic disease, where the bacterial infection progresses to the root canal system of the tooth, leading to periapical inflammation, bone erosion, severe pain, and tooth loss. Periapical inflammation may also exacerbate inflammation in other parts of the body. Although conventional clinical therapies for this disease are successful in approximately 80% of cases, there is still an urgent need for increased efficacy
