Multidimensional Correlates of Mental Health and Quality of Life in Chinese Caregivers of Preschool-Aged Autistic Children.

PURPOSE: We examined correlates of mental health and quality of life (QoL) among Chinese caregivers of preschool-aged autistic children (aged 18-59 months), using baseline data collected prior to intervention enrollment at a specialist autism center. METHODS: In this cross-sectional study, 424 caregivers (84.2% mothers) attending an urban autism center in Guangzhou completed measures of child characteristics, parental factors, and environmental variables. Hierarchical regression identified independent correlates of five outcomes (mental health and four QoL domains). RESULTS: Parental distres

The role of state social service spending in moderating mental health outcomes of community violence: A spatial meta-analysis.

Community violence is an epidemic in the United States. Studies estimate almost 30% of youth experience community violence, with higher rates in low-income urban settings. Community violence exposure is consistently linked to adverse mental health outcomes, including post-traumatic stress, internalizing, and externalizing symptoms. In response, nationwide efforts have emphasized increased financial investment in social services as a potential means to mitigate the impact of violence exposure. Yet, gaps remain in understanding whether structural investments (i.e., social service expenditures) m

20-minute neighbourhoods, criticisms, conspiracy theories, and health: a critical discourse analysis.

BACKGROUND: 20-minute neighbourhoods (20MNs) and other proximity-based urban planning models are argued to improve communities, enhance population health, and reduce inequities. However, these links remain unevidenced. Conversely, there are science-driven criticisms that 20MNs could exacerbate health/social inequities requiring evaluation. These models have also resulted in conspiracy theories, believed to be linked to COVID-19 public health measures, which may hinder the implementation and evaluation of 20MNs and any expected health/inequity gains. AIM: The aim of this research is to better

Primary Care Clinician Perspectives on Barriers to Postpartum Transition to Primary Care.

Background: The transition from obstetric to primary care is often suboptimal, particularly for individuals with barriers to accessing care. We aimed to understand experiences of primary care clinicians regarding provision of care and their perceptions of barriers to the transition of care in this critical period. Methods: We conducted focus groups with primary care clinicians recruited from diverse, urban health care settings, including an academic medical center, private practice, and federally qualified health centers. Groups were conducted in person or virtually (December 2019 to February

Relationship of sanitation, water boiling, and mosquito nets to health biomarkers in a rural subsistence population.

OBJECTIVES: Throughout human evolutionary history, parasites and pathogens were a major cause of mortality-modern urban life with public health infrastructure has changed disease exposure. We examine associations between boiling water, using latrines, mosquito net usage, and biomarkers among the Tsimane, a nonindustrial subsistence population with little public health infrastructure. METHODS: We conducted cross sectional surveys on water, latrines, and bed nets among 507 heads of households (aged 18-92 years, median age 41 years). Regression models estimated associations between behaviors and

School-Based Health Centers to Advance Health Equity: A Community Guide Systematic Review.

CONTEXT: Children from low-income and racial or ethnic minority populations in the U.S. are less likely to have a conventional source of medical care and more likely to develop chronic health problems than are more-affluent and non-Hispanic white children. They are more often chronically stressed, tired, and hungry, and more likely to have impaired vision and hearing-obstacles to lifetime educational achievement and predictors of adult morbidity and premature mortality. If school-based health centers (SBHCs) can overcome educational obstacles and increase receipt of needed medical services in

Children's health in slum settings.

Rapid urbanisation in the 20th century has been accompanied by the development of slums. Nearly one-third of the world's population and more than 60% of urban populations in the least developed countries live in slums, including hundreds of millions of children. Slums are areas of broad social and health disadvantage to children and their families due to extreme poverty, overcrowding, poor water and sanitation, substandard housing, limited access to basic health and education services, and other hardships (eg, high unemployment, violence). Despite the magnitude of this problem, very little is

Testing the Latino paradox in Latin America: a population-based study of Intra-regional immigrants in Chile.

BACKGROUND: Several studies in high-income countries report better health status of immigrants compared to the local population ("healthy migrant" effect), regardless of their socioeconomic deprivation. This is known as the Latino paradox. AIM: To test the Latino paradox within Latin America by assessing the health of international immigrants to Chile, most of them from Latin American countries, and comparing them to the Chilean-born. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Secondary data analysis of the population-based CASEN survey-2006. Three health outcomes were included: disability, illness/accident, and

Neonatal resuscitation capacity in Nepal.

AIM: Perinatal asphyxia is a major contributor to the nearly 4 million neonatal deaths worldwide each year in resource-limited settings. Neonatal resuscitation, a proven method for preventing newborn deaths, is effective only when local caregivers have proper training and access to essential supplies. There are few published data describing neonatal resuscitation capacity in Nepal, where neonatal mortality rates are high. The goal of this study was to quantify neonatal resuscitation capacity at birthing sites in urban and rural Nepal. METHODS: Seventeen birth centres ranging from tertiary car

Global disparities in supportive and survivorship care among adolescent and young adult cancer patients.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Adolescents and young adults (AYAs) with cancer are a vulnerable population affected by disparities in survivorship care access. These disparities are pronounced in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs) but exist even within high-income settings, affecting vulnerable and underserved groups. This expert review explores disparities in fertility preservation, psychosocial health, nutritional care, cardiovascular health, and secondary malignancies of AYA survivorship. RECENT FINDINGS: Fertility preservation services are often inaccessible due to high costs, limited provider

HIV-related risk among female migrants working in entertainment venues in China.

China has experienced a surge in internal migration during the past decade, and migrant populations have been identified as a high-risk group for HIV and other sexually transmitted infections (STIs). Young female migrants often find employment in entertainment venues (bars, karaoke parlors, and massage parlors) located in metropolitan cities, and sex work transactions frequently occur in these venues. We examined factors associated with risk for HIV, other STIs, and reproductive health challenges in a cross-sectional study of 358 young female migrants, ages 18-29, working in entertainment venu
