Coordination of oral cavity and laryngeal movements during swallowing.

In this study, dynamic imaging was used to track the movements of oral cavity and laryngeal structures during swallowing in 10 normal adults subjects. The movements of tiny lead pellet markers attached to the lips, tongue, mandible, and soft palate, as well as anatomic landmarks on the hyoid bone, were measured in relation to a reference pellet affixed to the upper central incisors. Sagittal views of the oral cavity were obtained using standard videofluorography. Each subject produced 10 swallows of 12 ml of tap water followed by 5 swallows with a bite block placed between the molars. The reco

The perception of emotion by schizophrenic patients.

Studies which have examined the perception of emotion by schizophrenic patients have produced conflicting results, an outcome which may, in part, be due to difficulties in presenting a realistic portrayal of emotion. This study exposed 32 schizophrenic patients in remission and ten controls to five videotaped scenes of emotional situations played by actors. The schizophrenic patients were divided into three groups, namely those living with high-EE relatives, those living with low-EE relatives and those living alone, in order to test the hypothesis that patients in a high-EE environment are les

SKF 38393 and apomorphine modify locomotion and exploration in rats placed on a holeboard by separate actions at dopamine D-1 and D-2 receptors.

Horizontal motor activity, rearing and head dipping were recorded automatically in rats placed on a holeboard and taken as indices of locomotion and exploration. Other behaviours were assessed visually using a video camera. SKF 38393, 15-30 mg/kg (D-1 agonist), suppressed all three behavioural measures more effectively in habituated than in naive rats. These actions were blocked by SCH 23390 (0.05 mg/kg, D-1 antagonist) but not by haloperidol (0.05 mg/kg, D-2 antagonist). Apomorphine modified behaviour biphasically, causing haloperidol-resistant sedation at a low, presynaptic dose (0.05 mg/kg)

Embedding the public voice in clinical trials: developing public-informed training for patient data research.

BACKGROUND: The use of health systems data (HSD) such as patient records and prescriptions is expanding within clinical trials to improve efficiency, reduce participant burden, and enhance real‑world relevance. However, challenges remain around governance, data quality, transparency and public trust, echoed through discussions in this project. While Patient and Public Involvement and Engagement is increasingly embedded in trial design, involvement in methodological and data‑focused areas remains limited. Ensuring that HSD trial training for researchers and public reflects public perspectives i

Predation on sea turtles at sea: A multi-source synthesis and research perspectives.

Predation is a key ecological process shaping sea turtle populations, yet - unlike predation of eggs, hatchlings and adults on nesting beaches - its role at sea remains poorly quantified due to observational challenges. This study synthesizes multiple, rarely integrated data sources-including unpublished data-to examine global patterns of sea turtle predation at sea. Sources include field observations (turtles found stranded, nesting, admitted to rescue centers, or captured in-water for research), literature records, predator diet data, and non-conventional online sources (NCS; images and vide

Little associations exist between the three commonly used functional screening tests in collegiate athletes.

Although an abundant number of studies have investigated the predictability of the commonly used functional screening tests and despite their popularity and applicability, the relationships between these tests have rarely been studied and have not been well established. This study aimed to examine the potential association between the Functional Movement Screen (FMS), Y Balance Test (YBT), and Landing Error Scoring System (LESS). Six hundred twenty-seven Iranian collegiate athletes (347 males, age = 22.63 ± 4.07, weight = 75.98 ± 13.79, height = 181.99 ± 10.15, BMI = 22.84 ± 3.16; and 280 fema

Reliability and Sensitivity of a Virtual Assessment Developed for Workplace Concussions: Protocol for a Method-Comparison Study.

BACKGROUND: Workplace mild traumatic brain injuries are frequently associated with persistent symptoms, leading to a reduction in productivity at work or even disability. People who sustain workplace injuries frequently need rehabilitation and support, and the challenges of delivering these services was heightened during the COVID-19 pandemic as injured workers had to be cared for remotely. Currently, clinicians are conducting both in-person and virtual (remote) concussion assessments; however, the measures that are being used to complete these assessments have undocumented psychometric proper

Anaesthetic Management in Mucopolysaccharidoses Patients: Clinical Experience in a Tertiary Hospital.

INTRODUCTION: Mucopolysaccharidoses (MPS) are a group of rare inherited metabolic diseases caused by the deficiency of enzymes required to degrade glycosaminoglycans (GAGs) in the lysosome with progressive and multiorgan involvement. Due to its progressive nature, a large number of patients need surgical intervention, which is associated with higher perioperative morbidity. METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed 29 medical records regarding the peri and post-operative anaesthetic care of 10 children with mucopolysaccharidoses at a tertiary hospital in Northern Portugal between 2010 and 2021. A

Computed tomography angiography-fluoroscopy image fusion allows visceral vessel cannulation without angiography during fenestrated endovascular aneurysm repair.

BACKGROUND: Fenestrated endovascular aneurysm repair (FEVAR) is an evolving technique to treat juxtarenal abdominal aortic aneurysms (AAAs). Catheterization of visceral and renal vessels after the deployment of the fenestrated main body device is often challenging, usually requiring additional fluoroscopy and multiple digital subtraction angiograms. The aim of this study was to assess the clinical utility and accuracy of a computed tomography angiography (CTA)-fluoroscopy image fusion technique in guiding visceral vessel cannulation during FEVAR. METHODS: Between August 2014 and September 201

A Novel Microchip Flow Chamber (Total Thrombus Analysis System) to Assess Canine Hemostasis.

Hemorrhagic diseases are common in dogs. Current coagulation assays do not model all aspects of in vivo hemostasis and may not predict bleeding risk. The Total-Thrombus Analysis System (T-TAS) is a novel hemostasis assay system in which whole blood flows through microfluidic channels at defined shear rates to provide qualitative and quantitative evaluation of platelet function (PL-chip) and coagulation function (AR-chip). The present study evaluated the T-TAS in dogs with hereditary bleeding disorders and with acquired hemorrhagic syndromes (Group 1), and healthy controls (Group 2). Hereditary

Bombarded? Child's-eye views of smartphone-based game application advertising: objective insights from Aotearoa New Zealand.

Children's engagement with smartphone-based (online) game applications is commonplace. There appears to be no objective evidence base for children's exposure to advertising within game-apps captured in real-time by children themselves. This study aimed to objectively explore the nature and extent of young adolescents' exposure to smartphone game-app-based advertising. Sixty-six children aged 11-13 years (mean age = 12.7, SD = 0.79) from 16 schools in the Wellington region of New Zealand used Zoom video teleconferencing software to record real-time, screen-shared internet use for four consecuti

Atrioventricular septal defects diagnosed in fetal life: associated cardiac and extra-cardiac abnormalities and outcome.

OBJECTIVES: We sought to establish the outlook for fetuses diagnosed with atrioventricular septal defect (AVSD) prenatally and its relation to additional cardiac, extracardiac and chromosomal abnormalities. BACKGROUND: Prediction of likely outcome of AVSD presenting prenatally is complicated by the wide variation in associated features. METHODS: Computerized records from 14,726 pregnancies referred to a fetal cardiology center were reviewed retrospectively. Pathological reports, postnatal records, follow-up inquiries and review of echocardiographic video recordings supplemented analysis of t

Multimodal machine learning mobility assessment in Parkinson's disease within supervised and unsupervised settings.

BACKGROUND: Mobility in people with Parkinson’s disease (PwPD) is strongly context-dependent. Clinic-based assessments provide only brief snapshots under controlled conditions and may not reflect everyday functional capacity. Wearable sensors enable continuous free-living monitoring, yet most studies use unimodal signals and simple threshold-based walking detection. Multimodal sensing, combining surface electromyography (sEMG) with inertial measurement units (IMUs), can offer a more complete picture of mobility in Parkinson’s disease (PD). Therefore, developing a data-driven multimodal gait an

Case Report: Role of hypoglycemia in seizure aggravation in a case of focal epilepsy: revealing a missing link between diabetes and dementia.

AIM: While low-frequency electroencephalographic (EEG) activity increases during hypoglycemia, the relationship between hypoglycemia and changes in epileptic activities has not been fully investigated. Recently, the American Clinical Neurophysiology Society's EEG Terminology 2021 defined criteria for Brief Potentially Ictal Rhythmic Discharges (BIRDs) including rhythmic fast activities. We evaluated the association between hypoglycemia and BIRDs. METHODS: Data from a 27-year-old female with focal epilepsy and idiopathic hypoglycemia, who underwent scalp-recorded long-term video-EEG using the

Potential effects of host competence and schooling behavior on parasite transmission in a host-pathogen system: a test of the dilution effect.

High species diversity in a community may reduce the risk of infectious disease, termed the dilution effect. However, the generality of the dilution effect in different disease systems remains controversial as both host competence and behaviors of hosts may play roles in dilution or amplification of disease. Using the goldfish (Carassius auratus)-monogenean ectoparasite (Gyrodactylus kobayashii) system, effects of host competence and schooling behavior on parasite transmission were investigated while holding focal host density constant. Following competency tests of 12 fish species as potentia
