Perpetration patterns and environmental contexts of IPV in Sweden: relationships with adult mental health.

Although excellent data exist on the overall prevalence of childhood exposure to intimate partner violence (IPV), there is less information available on the specific patterns of IPV exposure in childhood and how they influence adult mental health. The current study examines 703 Swedish adults who reported exposure to IPV in childhood. Participants were part of a large national study on violence exposure. They provided an extensive history of their exposure to IPV and maltreatment experiences during childhood via electronically administered questionnaires. Mean comparison and multivariate regre

Preventing Intimate Partner Murder-Suicide: A Case-Control Study of Suicidal Males in Abusive Relationships.

INTRODUCTION: Murder-suicide is a rare but serious public health problem. It often occurs in the context of intimate partner violence; 62% of murder-suicides in the U.S. involve killing an intimate partner. The goal of this study was to identify the risk indicators for intimate partner murder-suicide among suicidal males with a history of perpetrating intimate partner violence. METHODS: This case-control study used National Violent Death Reporting System data, 2019-2020. Cases were intimate partner murder-suicides committed by males. Controls were males who perpetrated intimate partner violen

The occurrence and co-occurrence of conflicts and negative acts and their associations with self-rated health, workability, and life-satisfaction: a cross-sectional study of Swedish school principals.

OBJECTIVE: As part of our research on Swedish school principals, we examined the occurrence and co-occurrence of conflicts and five negative acts (i.e. harassment, sexual harassment, threats of violence or physical harm, physical violence, bullying), their attributed sources, and their associations with self-rated health, workability, and general life satisfaction among 2670 principals. RESULTS: During the past 12 months, approximately 75% of the school principals had experienced conflicts, 27.1% harassment, 22.4% threats of violence or physical harm, 7.2% physical violence, 5.9% bullying, an

The Relation Between the Two Factors of Psychopathy and Intimate Partner Aggression.

Psychopathy is a personality disorder that has emerged as a correlate of antisocial, impulsive, and violent behavior, including intimate partner violence (IPV). In the current study, we sought to explore the complex relationship between two factors of psychopathy and IPV perpetration. The Fearlessness-Dominance Factor 1 (PPI-I) assesses the affective-interpersonal traits of psychopathy, whereas the Impulsive-Antisociality Factor II (PPI-II) assesses the behavioral-lifestyle traits of psychopathy. Data from 114 couples was utilized in the current study. When using male self-report of IPV, all f

Physical mistreatment in persons with Alzheimer's disease.

Physical mistreatment has been estimated to affect 2 million older persons each year and dramatically affects health outcomes. While researchers have attempted to examine risk factors for specific forms of abuse, many have been able to focus on only victim or perpetrator characteristics, or a limited number of psychosocial variables at any one time. Additionally, data on risk factors for subgroups such as persons with Alzheimer's disease who may have heightened and/or unique risk profiles has also been limited. This paper examines risk for physical violence in caregiver/patient dyads who parti

Global burden and trends of high alcohol use-related injuries from 1990 to 2030: a comprehensive assessment of self-harm and interpersonal violence, transport injuries, and unintentional injuries using global burden of disease 2021.

BACKGROUND: High alcohol use (HAU) is a major global public health concern, contributing to injuries such as Self-harm and interpersonal violence (SIV), Transport injuries (TI), and Unintentional injuries (UII). However, comprehensive global assessments of HAU-related injury burden remain limited. METHODS: Using data from Global Burden of Disease (GBD) 2021, we estimated HAU-related mortality and disability-adjusted life years (DALYs) from 1990 to 2021 across 204 countries and regions. We analyzed trends in Age-Standardized Disability-Adjusted Life Years Rate (ASDR) and Age-Standardized Morta

Who bought a gun during the COVID-19 pandemic in the United States?: Associations with QAnon beliefs, right-wing political attitudes, intimate partner violence, antisocial behavior, suicidality, and mental health and substance use problems.

There was a large spike in gun purchases and gun violence during the first year of the COVID-19 pandemic in the United States. We used an online U.S. national survey (N = 1036) to examine the characteristics of people who purchased a gun between March 2020 and October 2021 (n = 103) and compared them to non-gun owners (n = 763) and people who own a gun but did not purchase a gun during the COVID-19 pandemic (n = 170). Compared to non-gun owners, pandemic gun buyers were younger and more likely to be male, White race, and to affiliate with the Republican party. Compared to non-gun owners and pr

Does obstetric violence influence institutional delivery utilization? Prevalence of fear of institutional delivery on subsequent pregnancy among mothers who gave birth in the past 12 months at Honkolo Wabe District, Arsi Zone Ethiopia, 2023.

BACKGROUND: One of the issues that contribute to the increase in home births among mothers is the fear of giving birth in an institution. Although delivery services are free in Ethiopia, about half of women chose not to use them because they were afraid of giving birth in a hospital. Home deliveries are the leading cause of morbidity and mortality among mothers and newborns in Ethiopia. One of the major reasons why mothers choose not to give birth in medical facilities is due to fear of an institutional delivery. Nevertheless, no research has been conducted on Ethiopians' fear of institutional

Differential Associations of Depressive Symptomology to HIV Care Engagement Among Young Black Sexual Minority Men with HIV (YBSMM+) in the US South: A Multi-Group Analysis of Mood, Intimate Partner Violence, and Alcohol Use.

Young Black Sexual Minority Men with HIV (YBSMM+) in the US South encounter multiple socio-structural challenges that contribute to disproportionately poor HIV-related outcomes across the care continuum. Depression, anxiety, intimate partner violence (IPV), and alcohol use are prominent factors that negatively impact engagement with HIV care. Syndemic theory posits that these multiple factors interact synergistically to promote poor outcomes; however, depression itself is highly heterogeneous in presentation, which may pose issues when examining associations to HIV care engagement. This study

"When you get old like this … you don't run those risks anymore": influence of age on sexual risk behaviors and condom use attitudes among methamphetamine-using heterosexual women with a history of partner violence.

BACKGROUND: Drug use and partner violence affect older women, yet few studies highlight age-specific HIV risks and prevention strategies. This study compares sexual risk behaviors, condom use attitudes, and HIV knowledge between midlife/older women (ages 45+) and younger women (ages 18-44) reporting methamphetamine use and partner violence in San Diego, California. METHODS: Our mixed methods study used themes from a qualitative substudy (n = 18) to inform logistic regression analysis of baseline data from an HIV behavioral intervention trial (n = 154). FINDINGS: Age-related qualitative theme

The 'Oscar curse' or the price of women's development.

This article aims to reflect on the unconscious dynamics that sustain the shocking increase in feminicide in the world. It is observed that psychological and physical violence by the intimate partner has numerous facets, especially when the woman gains more or has more professional success than her partner. This violence can take a subtle form as rejection and betrayal in order to hurt the woman and destroy her self-esteem and success. Based on numerous studies and bibliography it is demonstrated that the main cause of violence by the intimate partner is the fear of the power of the feminine t

Understanding pathways to e-cigarette use across sexual identity: A multi-group structural equation model.

This study explored the relationships between sexual violence, smoking behaviors, suicidality and past 30-day e-cigarette use under the theoretical framework of Minority Stress Theory. The 2017 National Youth Risk Behavioral Survey was utilized to study a nationally representative sample of sexual minority (lesbian, gay, bisexual, and unsure) and heterosexual high school students (N = 7882). Multi-group structural equation modeling (SEM) was employed to examine whether sexual violence and suicidality had a direct effect on e-cigarette use, after controlling for prior smoking behaviors (cigaret

An Exploratory Study of Female Psychopathy and Drug-Related Violent Crime.

There is a clear link between drugs and violence, and the extensive burden drug-related violence inflicts on society. However, drug-related violence is largely understudied, especially in female populations. The aim of the present study was to explore whether women convicted of drug-related violent crime differed on individual-level risk factors from women convicted of a nondrug-related violent crime and women convicted of nonviolent crimes. One hundred and twenty-five female inmates were classified using official criminal records. Multinomial logistic regression indicated inmates higher in an

Psychiatrists' judgments of dangerousness in patients on an acute care unit.

Statistical analyses suggest that psychiatrists emphasize hostility, agitation, previous assaultiveness, and suspiciousness as factors predictive of violence in psychiatric inpatients. When the actual correlates of violence in these patients are evaluated, a different picture of the assaultive inpatient emerges. Examination of differences between the cues emphasized by clinicians to make their predictions and the empirical correlates of violence suggests ways of improving the accuracy of clinical judgments of inpatients' dangerousness.

Partner Abusive Behaviors in the Lives of Never-Battered, Formerly Battered, and Currently Battered Women.

This study investigates the spectrum of abusive behaviors experienced by women in intimate relationships by comparing their prevalence among women in nonviolent and violent partnerships, utilizing a new validated measure introduced here. Using data from 926 Israeli women, the research examines 20 distinct abusive behaviors, testing 3 hypotheses: that mildly severe abusive behaviors (e.g., verbal aggression, emotional manipulation) are more common than severe ones (e.g., physical violence, threats); that physical violence co-occurs with both mildly severe and severe abuse; and that mildly sever

When the woman gets violent: the construction of domestic abuse experience from heterosexual men's perspective.

AIMS AND OBJECTIVES: To promote a critical approach on the conceptualisation of domestic violence by investigating the experience of abuse on the part of men who are victims of domestic violence by their female partners. BACKGROUND: Media attention and prevention programmes relating to domestic violence have mainly focused on women as the victims and men as the perpetrators. The underlying idea is that violence is predominantly physical and a prerogative of men. This conceptualisation of violence reduces the opportunities for the consideration of different modalities of abuse. DESIGN: Discou

Money Lending Practices and Adolescent Dating Relationship Abuse: Results from a National Sample.

Research on adult intimate partner violence has demonstrated that economic considerations and financial decision-making are associated with the use of violence in marital and cohabiting relationships. Yet limited work has examined whether financial behaviors influence the use of violence in adolescent dating relationships. We use data from the National Survey on Teen Relationships and Intimate Violence (STRiV) (n = 728), a comprehensive national household survey dedicated specifically to the topic of adolescent relationship abuse, to examine associations between requests for money lending, eco

Predictors of Health Care Use Among a Predominantly Hispanic, Urban Sample of Individuals Seeking IPV Services.

Hispanics, Blacks, and women are disproportionately burdened by intimate partner violence. Barriers to seeking medical care play an important role in victims accessing the full myriad of services they need. A secondary analysis of data collected over a 6-month period at a coordinated domestic violence social agency was completed to assess predictors of seeking medical care after experiencing intimate partner violence. A hierarchical logistic regression was conducted to assess the predictive ability of socioeconomic factors, type of abuse, and severity of abuse. Hispanic victims of intimate par

Behavior Sequencing Violent Episodes in Forensic Youth Populations.

Every year, more children and youths are sent to Secure Children's Homes while moving through the criminal justice system. Aggressive and violent incidents in these settings are common, and staff are often required to intervene and restrain violent individuals. The research literature has many examples of aggression and violence questionnaires and measures; however, for staff in communal areas it is the observable behaviors that they react to most. The current research, therefore, analyzed observable behaviors leading-up to violent episodes, and used Behavior Sequence Analysis to highlight the
