Primary hypertension-induced cerebellar encephalopathy causing obstructive hydrocephalus. Case report.

Hypertension-induced encephalopathy is a recognized pathological process commonly focused in the parietal and occipital lobes of the cerebral hemispheres. The parenchyma of the posterior fossa is infrequently involved. The authors report on two cases of isolated edema of the cerebellar hemispheres, which occurred in the setting of hypertensive crisis and led to complete obstruction of or significant impingement on the fourth ventricle and potentially lethal hydrocephalus. To the best of the authors' knowledge, these are the first reported cases of hypertensive encephalopathy centered in the po

Serial lumbar CSF presure measurements and cranial computed tomographic findings in childhood tuberculous meningitits.

Intracranial pressure (ICP) was monitored in 218 consecutive children with hydrocephalus secondary to tuberculous meningitis (TBM). All children underwent cranial computerized tomographic (CT) scanning and continuous lumbar cerebrospinal (CSF) pressure monitoring on admission. Noncommunicating hydrocephalus (37 children), as determined by air encephalography, was treated by ventriculoperitoneal (VP) shunting and communicating hydrocephalus (181 children), by means of daily acetazolamide and frusemide. Response of ICP to treatment in the group with communicating hydrocephalus was assessed by me

Efficacy and safety of a balanced salt solution versus a 0.9% saline infusion for the prevention of contrast-induced acute kidney injury (BASIC trial): a study protocol for a randomized controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Contrast-induced acute kidney injury (CI-AKI) is one of the most common causes of iatrogenic kidney injury and, therefore, its prevention is an important issue. However, whether the administration of 0.9% saline is the optimal prophylaxis method remains uncertain due to its supra-physiologic chloride component. In particular, recent studies suggest that chloride-restricted solutions showed superiority over 0.9% saline in several clinical settings. METHODS/DESIGN: The investigators designed a multicenter randomized controlled trial to compare the efficacy of a balanced salt solutio

Periocular dirofilariasis: A case series.

OBJECTIVE: To cite a series of patients presenting with complaints of a lid swelling associated with preseptal cellulitis. METHODS: Three patients on three different occasions came with complaints of a unilateral lid swelling associated with preseptal cellulitis. Examination showed palpable mass in the upper eyelid localized, firm in consistency and was freely mobile and occasionally disappeared during palpation. CT scan showed nonspecific preseptal inflammation. A trial of antibiotics was given in each of the cases with temporary reduction in the swelling but a consecutive flare up following

Pancreatitis in hand-foot-and-mouth disease caused by enterovirus 71.

Some viruses, including certain members of the enterovirus genus, have been reported to cause pancreatitis, especially Coxsackie virus. However, no case of human enterovirus 71 (EV71) associated with pancreatitis has been reported so far. We here report a case of EV71-induced hand-foot-and-mouth disease (HFMD) presenting with pancreatitis in a 2-year-old girl. This is the first report of a patient with acute pancreatitis in HFMD caused by EV71. We treated the patient conservatively with nasogastric suction, intravenous fluid and antivirals. The patient's symptoms improved after 8 d, and recove

Mesenteric vasculitis causing ileocecal intussusception as the initial presentation of systemic lupus erythematosus: a case report.

Mesenteric vasculitis is one of the most devastating complications of systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) and may produce a spectrum of complications, including ulceration, hemorrhage, bowel necrosis, perforation, serositis, and ascites. Intussusception is a process in which a segment of intestine invaginates into the adjoining intestinal lumen, causing bowel obstruction. Intussusception in association with SLE has rarely been reported. Here we report a case of SLE whose initial presentation was mesenteric vasculitis causing ileocecal intussusception.

Latex allergy and medical aspects of the use of latex products.

Injuries of the upper cervical spine represent 1/3 of all cervical spine injuries and approximately 40 % result by the death. Every level of the cervical spine can be injured - fractures of condyles of the occipital bone (CO), atlantooccipital dislocation (AOD), fractures of the Atlas (C1), atlantoaxial dislocation (AAD) and fractures of the axis (C2). Most of cases in younger patients are caused by high-energy trauma, while by elderly people, because of the osteoporosis, is needed much less energy and even simple falls can cause the injury of the cervical spine. That´s why the etiology of inj

Severe Phenotype in an Indian Family With Progressive Pseudorheumatoid Arthropathy of Childhood.

Progressive pseudorheumatoid arthropathy of childhood (PPAC) is a rare autosomal recessive progressive condition that affects the cartilage of joints and bones. The symptoms of PPAC include stiffness of the joints, bony swelling of the toes and fingers, short stature, kyphosis, and muscle weakness. The radiologic manifestations are often mistaken for juvenile rheumatoid arthritis and include platyspondyly, widened metaphyses, flattened epiphyses, and large femoral heads. The disease is caused by variants in the WISP3 (also known as CCN6) gene, which encodes a member of the WNT1 inducible signa

New Copper (II) Complexes Based on 1,4-Disubstituted-1,2,3-Triazole Ligands with Promising Antileishmanial Activity.

Background/Objectives: Leishmaniasis constitutes one of the most fatal parasitic diseases globally, adversely impacting the health of individuals residing in both intertropical and temperate zones. In these geographical areas, the administration of treatment is often inconsistent and largely ineffective with the available pharmaceuticals, as these exhibit more pronounced side effects than the therapeutic advantages they purport to provide. Methods: Consequently, the current investigation seeks to engage in molecular modeling of novel pharmacological candidates incorporating 1,2,3 disubstituted

E. coli-synthesized selenium nanoparticles suppress phoP and bapA gene expression in S. enterica isolated from human blood.

INTRODUCTION: Typhoid fever is caused by Salmonella enterica, which is a chronic health problem in endemic areas due to multidrug resistance and biofilm development. The stress adaptation and virulence regulatory gene phoP and the biofilm-associated gene bapA may represent molecular targets for anti-virulence interventions. In this study, S. Typhi isolates from blood samples were characterized for their antimicrobial sensitivity and biofilm formation, and the molecular impact of biosynthesized selenium nanoparticles (SeNPs) on phoP and bapA expression was assessed. METHODOLOGY: Biochemical an

Small bowel obstruction secondary to band formation by an omphalomesenteric cyst - A case report.

INTRODUCTION: The omphalomesenteric duct (OMD) is an embryologic structure that connects the midgut to the yolk sac. It usually obliterates between the 9th and 18th weeks of gestation. The omphalomesenteric duct cyst is an embryologic remnant of the yolk stalk. If the yolk stalk does not obliterate completely, various portions may persist, giving rise to many entities, including an omphalomesenteric duct cyst. PRESENTATION OF CASE: An extremely rare case of a band formed by an omphalomesenteric cyst causing small bowel obstruction is presented in a 14-year-old male patient with no previous me

Genetic overlap between sarcoidosis and lung cancer: a combined in silico and in vitro approach.

Sarcoidosis patients exhibit an elevated risk of developing lung cancer (LC), suggesting shared genetic and molecular mechanisms between these conditions. This study aimed to identify common differentially expressed genes (DEGs) in sarcoidosis and LC and to evaluate the therapeutic potential of a repurposable drug targeting these shared genes. Gene expression datasets (GSE157671 and GSE229253) were analyzed to identify overlapping DEGs, with validation performed using additional GEO datasets and the GEPIA tool. Functional enrichment and protein-protein interaction (PPI) analyses were conducted

Functionalization-Dependent Cytotoxicity of Silver Nanoparticles: A Comparative Study of Chlorhexidine and Metronidazole Conjugates.

This study examines the cytotoxicity of two silver nanoparticle formulations-AgNPs conjugated with chlorhexidine (AgNPs-CHL) and AgNPs conjugated with polyethylene glycol and metronidazole (AgNPs-PEG-MET)-as examples of the surface functionalization of silver nanoparticles with drugs via sulfur-silver bonds and nitrogen-silver interactions. We previously reported the synthesis of these NPs and their efficiency in periodontitis treatment. Here, we analyze the relationships between the cytotoxic mechanisms of AgNPs and their surface chemistry. UV-Vis spectroscopy, dynamic light scattering (DLS),

Complete resolution of non-tuberculous mycobacterial pulmonary nodule following cryobiopsy: The first case report.

BACKGROUND: Non-tuberculous mycobacterial (NTM) lung disease presents diagnostic and therapeutic challenges, often mimicking lung cancer, tuberculosis, and other bronchopulmonary disorders. Management typically involves prolonged antibiotic treatment, but alternative therapeutic approaches for localized disease remain underexplored. Cryobiopsy has emerged as an advanced bronchoscopic diagnostic technique, providing larger, higher-quality lung tissue samples compared to traditional forceps biopsy. However, its potential therapeutic effects, particularly its unintended cryoablation effect, remai

A Proposed Treatment Algorithm for Low Back Pain Secondary to Bertolotti's Syndrome.

BACKGROUND: Chronic low back pain is widely prevalent, and there are a range of conditions that may result in the low back pain. In general, treatment of low back pain starts with conservative management such as medications, physical therapy, and home exercise regimens. If conservative measures fail, a range of interventional techniques can be employed to manage back pain. An uncommonly recognized cause of back pain is Bertolotti's syndrome which is a result of back pain due to lumbosacral transitional vertebrae (LSTV). LSTV is a congenital abnormality either characterized by the lumbarization
