Global Access to Comprehensive Care for Paediatric and Congenital Heart Disease.

Paediatric and congenital heart disease (PCHD) is common but remains forgotten on the global health agenda. Congenital heart disease is the most frequent major congenital anomaly, affecting approximately 1 in every 100 live births. In high-income countries, most children now live into adulthood, whereas in low- and middle-income countries, over 90% of patients do not get the care they need. Rheumatic heart disease is the most common acquired cardiovascular disease in children and adolescents. While almost completely eradicated in high-income countries, over 30-40 million people live with rheum

The Effect of Attitudes Towards Individuals with Sexual Convictions on Professional and Student Risk Judgments.

Attitudes towards individuals with sexual convictions is an area with growing research interest, but the effects of such attitudes on professional judgments is largely unexplored. What is known from the existing literature is that attitudes guide the interpretation of sexual crime related information, which cascade into potential biased or heuristically driven judgments. In this study we recruited samples of both students (n = 341) and forensic professionals (n = 186) to explore whether attitudes towards individuals with sexual convictions predicted risk judgments of hypothetical sexual offens

A-Test Method for Quantifying Structural Risk and Learning Capacity of Supervised Machine Learning Methods.

This paper presents an original method for studying the performance of the supervised Machine Learning (ML) methods, the A-Test method. The method offers the possibility of investigating the structural risk as well as the learning capacity of ML methods in a quantitating manner. A-Test provides a powerful validation method for the learning methods with small or medium size of the learning data, where overfitting is regarded as a common problem of learning. Such a condition can occur in many applications of bioinformatics and biomedical engineering in which access to a large dataset is a challe

Hazardous Drug Contamination: Presence of Bathroom Contamination in an Ambulatory Cancer Center.

BACKGROUND: Many hazardous drugs (HDs) are excreted in urine and feces, and evidence has shown that bathrooms of patients receiving chemotherapy at home are contaminated with HDs. However, little information exists on bathroom contamination in ambulatory clinics where HDs are administered. OBJECTIVES: This project aimed to determine the presence of HD residue in the patient and staff bathrooms of an ambulatory cancer center. METHODS: A quality improvement project was initiated to examine potential contamination by the HDs 5-fluorouracil and oxaliplatin in a patient bathroom and a secured bad

Active middle ear implantation: imaging in the pre-operative planning and post-operative assessment of the Vibrant SoundbridgeTM.

Active middle ear implants augment sound waves and directly stimulate the middle ear structures. The most frequently utilised active middle ear implant is the Vibrant Soundbridge TM (VSB).CT plays a vital role in appropriate patient selection and surgical planning of active middle ear implant surgery. The VSB TM offers a number of options for implant placement. The ideal location is influenced by the patient's middle ear and mastoid anatomy as well as the type and severity of the hearing loss. CT provides important information on the surgical access to the middle ear and helps determine the mo

Clinical and biological analysis in graftless maxillary sinus lift.

Maxillary sinus lift for dental implant installation is a well-known and versatile technique; new techniques are presented based on the physiology of intrasinus bone repair. The aim of this review was to determine the status of graftless maxillary sinus lift and analyze its foundations and results. A search was conducted of the literature between 1995 and 2015 in the Medline, ScienceDirect, and SciELO databases using the keywords "maxillary sinus lift," "blood clot," "graftless maxillary sinus augmentation," and "dental implant placement." Ten articles were selected for our analysis of this te

Patient Voice in Rare Disease Drug Development and Endpoints.

While planning for a successful clinical trial in a prevalent condition is no trivial orchestration, even more complicated is the coordination of novel, delicate and critical operational components necessary for the successful conduct of clinical trials of rare disease (RD). We highlight some of the inherent and practical challenges to conducting clinical trials and selecting or developing endpoints for RD and the importance of including the patient voice or perspective. These challenges include the lack of regulatory precedent for proposed endpoints, a void of available measures, little or no

A Personality-Based Latent Class Analysis of Emerging Adult Gamblers.

Increases in access to gambling venues have been accompanied by increased gambling behavior among young adults. The present research examined associations among Five Factor Model personality traits, motives for gambling, and gambling behavior and problems using latent class analysis. College students (N = 220) completed online measures of personality and gambling behavior as part of a larger intervention trial. Agreeableness and conscientiousness were negatively associated with indicators of gambling behavior. Low agreeableness and high neuroticism were associated with gambling-specific motive

Varicella zoster virus: chickenpox and shingles.

The varicella zoster virus causes two infections: varicella, also known as chickenpox occurring mostly in childhood, and herpes zoster, also known as shingles affecting mainly older people. Varicella usually occurs in children under ten years of age. It is generally a mild infection and in the UK vaccination is not offered as part of the routine immunisation programme. However, adults who develop varicella are at risk of developing complications and the infection is likely to be more severe. Serious complications are a particular risk for pregnant women, unborn children, neonates and those who

Extent of Digital Health Fragmentation and Potential Implications for Antimicrobial Prescribing: Rapid Evidence Review.

BACKGROUND: Prior microbiology results, resistance patterns, and antimicrobial exposure are central to safe and effective antimicrobial prescribing. Digital health fragmentation refers to the dispersal of patient data across multiple electronic systems and the associated challenge of accessing complete information at the point of care. Antimicrobial prescribing for infections represents a critical use case to investigate the impact of digital health fragmentation on patient care. While interoperability has been studied in the context of patient safety, no review has described digital health fr

Can large language models be trusted? Reliability and readability of responses to perinatal depression FAQs.

OBJECTIVE: Large language models (LLMs), a core technology of generative artificial intelligence (AI), are increasingly used in health education and promotion. Although they may expand access to medical information, concerns remain regarding the reliability and readability of AI generated content for the public. This study evaluated the reliability and readability of answers generated by five LLMs to common questions about perinatal depression. The primary aims were to determine (1) the reliability of LLM responses to frequently asked questions about perinatal depression and (2) whether the re

Co-Designing Person- and Family-Centered Care for Older Adults Living With HIV: Protocol for a Community-Based Participatory Study.

BACKGROUND: Advances in antiretroviral therapy have transformed HIV into a chronic condition, leading to a growing population of adults aged 50 years and older living with HIV in Canada and globally. These individuals experience higher rates of multimorbidity, frailty, cognitive changes, and polypharmacy than their HIV-negative peers, and many rely on caregivers for emotional and practical support. Caregiving often occurs within chosen families of partners, friends, and community members, yet these caregivers remain largely unrecognized in policies that prioritize bio-legal family structures.

Evaluation of multiple data sources for predicting increased need for HIV prevention among cisgender women: understanding missed opportunities for Pre-exposure Prophylaxis (PrEP).

BACKGROUND: Ciswomen constitute a disproportionately low percentage of pre-exposure prophylaxis for HIV prevention (PrEP) users compared to men. Despite PrEP's effectiveness, women are 5.25 times less likely to take PrEP than men. Identifying women who have increased reasons for HIV prevention and educating and offering PrEP to these women is crucial to reducing HIV transmission and overall health equity. However, the best method of identifying women at highest risk of acquiring HIV remains unknown. This study aimed to identify common HIV risk factors and data sources for identifying these com

Perceived safety in digital information environments: objective violence, online disinformation, internet use, and victimization across Europe, 2002-2023.

INTRODUCTION: Perceived safety is a psychologically consequential judgment shaped by objective threats, prior victimization, and mediated information. However, few studies jointly examine longitudinal crime data, national digital-information environments, and individual Internet use. METHODS: We integrated European Social Survey Rounds 1-11 with homicide data from the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime, Digital Society Project indicators, and World Development Indicators. Study 1 examined 308 country-round-year cells from 38 European countries, representing 442,100 respondents, using we

Caring amid crisis: a qualitative study of caregivers' experiences, wellbeing, and support for older adults.

BACKGROUND: Unpaid caregivers are a critical yet structurally under-recognized component of health and social care systems, providing essential support to older adults living with chronic illness, frailty, and complex care needs. Although caregiving challenges predate COVID-19, the pandemic intensified reliance on unpaid care and exposed persistent gaps in system coordination, service access, and caregiver support. This study examines how unpaid caregivers in Ontario, Canada, retrospectively understand caregiving during and following this period, with attention to how health and social care sy

A qualitative analysis exploring barriers and enablers to distribution, delivery, and access to COVID-19 vaccines in Botswana.

INTRODUCTION: The COVID-19 pandemic highlighted pre-existing weaknesses, revealing deep-rooted issues in infrastructure, access, and resource allocation that have long impeded African countries' ability to effectively meet population health needs. It also became evident during the pandemic that there were discrepancies in how vaccines were distributed, delivered and accessed in these countries. We aimed to identify vaccine distribution, service delivery processes and related barriers in Botswana to contextually explore practices that either enhance or hinder access and equity in vaccine distri

Healthcare gaps and inequities following hospitalisation for COVID-19 in Brazil's universal healthcare system: a patient-engaged survey of Long COVID healthcare needs, use and barriers.

BACKGROUND: Long COVID (LC) is an infection-associated chronic condition (IACC) that tends to be neglected by healthcare systems. Studies of post-COVID healthcare utilisation find elevated levels of use but have mainly been conducted in high-income settings. In the context of Brazil's universal health system (SUS), our patient-engaged study aimed to map healthcare needs, use, and access barriers related to LC up to 24 months following COVID-19 hospitalisation, in the interest of informing health system planning for an equitable LC response. METHODS: A cohort survey included a probabilistic sa
