Bronchial Artery Embolization for Life-Threatening Hemoptysis in COVID-19 Patients.

After the outbreak of the novel coronavirus at the end of December 2019 in China, it has become a global pandemic. Clinical manifestation of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) has a wide range of presentations from asymptomatic to severe multi-organ involvement. Hemoptysis appears to be one of the major manifestations of severe acute respiratory syndrome that is related to COVID-19 infection. The occurrence of hemoptysis is multifactorial. However, massive hemoptysis is usually related to pulmonary aspergillosis or severe bronchiectasis due to corticosteroid pulse therapy that can be life-thr

Epstein-Barr Virus Reactivation Causing Cholestatic Hepatitis.

Infection with Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) is common and associated with a high seroprevalence. It is often asymptomatic, but infectious mononucleosis (IM) is the clinical hallmark of this disease especially among teens. Hepatic involvement during primary EBV infection often results in mild self-resolving elevation of liver enzymes, typically in association with IM. However, cholestatic hepatitis might sporadically occur. EBV reactivation is rare, especially among immunocompetent patients. Moreover, reactivation of EBV causing isolated cholestatic hepatitis is extremely rare and only reported in

Female urogenital chlamydia: Epidemiology, chlamydia on pregnancy, current diagnosis, and treatment.

Female urogenital chlamydia is a disease caused by Chlamydia trachomatis infection in the female urogenital tract. It is a common bacterial sexually transmitted disease. The bacteria is transmitted through sexual contact with an infected partner or from mother to newborn during vaginal delivery. The prevalence varies among studies and the number is possibly higher due to the lack of massive screening. Many patients were asymptomatic and still be able to transmit the disease. The undiagnosed and untreated disease could cause pelvic inflammatory disease, which leads to infertility, ectopic pregn

[Description of a case of abdominal sepsis due to Desulfovibrio desulfuricans].

Desulfovibrio spp. are strict anaerobes that are ubiquitous in nature. They can reside in the human or animal gastrointestinal tract and, as they are also environmental bacteria, may be present in soil and water. They can persist asymptomatically in the intestine or behave as opportunistic pathogens associated with primary bacteremia and intraabdominal infections. Several Desulfovibrio spp. infections may be underestimated due to their slow growth rate and because many laboratories do not routinely perform anaerobic cultures. Simple tests such as motility detection on a fresh subculture, Gram

Infected omental cyst complicated with subacute intestinal obstruction and ileal erosion in a 2-year-old boy: a case report.

An omental cyst is a rare intraabdominal pathology that can cause acute abdomen and intestinal obstruction among children. A 2-year-old boy presented with fever, bilious vomiting, abdomen distension and loose stool of acute onset. The chest and abdominal radiographs showed right pleural effusion and prominent small bowels with thickening walls respectively. Ultrasonography revealed a gastrointestinal duplication cyst. An exploratory laparotomy was done and found a 5x5 cm infected omental cyst, severely adhered to and eroded into the ileum causing a small perforation. Omental cyst excision and

Memory B cell and antibody responses to flavivirus infection and vaccination.

Flaviviruses are a group of mosquito- or tick-borne single-stranded RNA viruses that can cause a wide range of clinical manifestations in humans and animals, including asymptomatic, flu-like febrile illness, hemorrhagic fever, encephalitis, birth defects, and death. Many of them have no licensed vaccines available for human use. Memory B cell development and induction of neutralizing antibody responses, which are important for the control of flavivirus infection and dissemination, have been used as biomarkers for vaccine efficacy. In this review, we will discuss recent findings on memory B cel

Dissecting Streptococcus pyogenes interaction with human.

Streptococcus pyogenes is a species of Gram-positive bacteria. It is also known as Group A Streptococcus (GAS) that causes pathogenesis to humans only. The GAS infection has several manifestations including invasive illness. Current research has linked the molecular modes of GAS virulence with substantial sequencing determinations for the isolation of genomes. These advances help to comprehend the molecular evolution resulting in the pandemic strains. Thus, it is indispensable to reconsider the philosophy that involves GAS pathogenesis. The recent investigations involve studying GAS in the nas

Sequential Removal of a Large Odontoma in the Angle of the Mandible.

Odontomas are the commonly occurring benign tumors of the jaw, which are odontogenic in origin. Lesion originates as the dental components are laid down in a disorganized manner, due to failure of normal morphodifferentiation. They are considered as hamartomatous developmental malformations rather than a true neoplasm. Mostly, these asymptomatic lesions are discovered as an incidental finding. Large odontomas may give rise to local disturbances, such as eruption delay of permanent teeth, asymmetric tooth eruption, malpositioning, displacement, resorption, or occasional devitalization of adjace

Current knowledge about Aelurostrongylus abstrusus biology and diagnostic.

Feline aelurostrongylosis, caused by the lungworm Aelurostrongylus abstrusus, is a parasitic disease with veterinary importance. The female hatches her eggs in the bronchioles and alveolar ducts, where the larva develop into adult worms. L1 larvae and adult nematodes cause pathological changes, typically inflammatory cell infiltrates in the bronchi and the lung parenchyma. The level of infection can range from asymptomatic to the presence of severe symptoms and may be fatal for cats. Although coprological and molecular diagnostic methods are useful for A. abstrusus detection, both techniques c

HIV-associated erythema elevatum diutinum: a case report and review of a clinically distinct variant.

A 24-year-old man with untreated human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection consulted our outreach clinic owing to the development of numerous asymptomatic nodules on his palms and fingers. Histopathologic evaluation revealed leukocytoclastic vasculitis and prominent fibrosis with a neutrophilic infiltrate consistent with erythema elevatum diutinum (EED). We referred the patient for initiation of antiretroviral therapy and started him on dapsone. The pathogenesis of EED is not completely understood, but it has been associated with numerous systemic conditions that may be infectious, inflamma

Extra-enteric Blastocystis infection in a duck.

Cell structures morphologically consistent with Blastocystis were aspirated from a subcutaneous facial swelling in a 13-mo-old pet duck. On PCR analysis and sequencing, the organism was confirmed as Blastocystis sp. subtype 7. Blastocystis is a single-celled protist that is found in the intestinal tract of many species, including mammals, birds, reptiles, amphibians, and insects. A complete understanding of the lifecycle and pathogenesis of the parasite remains elusive. Blastocystis has been implicated in human and animal disease; however, its role is controversial given that it is commonly fo

Low prevalence of IgG antibodies against antigens of HEV genotypes 1 and 3 in women with a high-risk pregnancy.

The aim of the study was to assess whether high-risk pregnant women have a higher prevalence of HEV during the perinatal period. This was a cross-sectional study of 428 patients: Group 1, 127 women with a high-risk pregnancy; Group 2, 97 asymptomatic people with reactivity to HCV or HBV; Group 3, 94 patients with clinical symptoms suggestive of HEV infection; and Group 4, 110 healthy blood donors from an urban area of Mexico City. ELISA was used to measure antibody to HEV genotypes 1 and 3. The prevalence rates of anti-HEV IgG antibodies were 0.79% in Group 1, 2.1% in Group 2, 7.4% in Group 3,

Zika Virus Disease for the Neurointensivist.

Zika virus (ZIKV) is a mosquito-borne and sexually transmitted flavivirus currently spreading throughout the Pacific and Western Hemisphere. ZIKV infection is often either asymptomatic or causes a self-limiting illness with symptoms such as rash, fever, myalgia, arthralgia, headache, or conjunctivitis. Rarely, ZIKV infection has been associated with conditions such as severe thrombocytopenia, microcephaly and other developmental abnormalities, acute polyneuropathy/Guillain-Barré syndrome, myelitis, meningoencephalitis, transient encephalopathy, provoked seizures, and various ophthalmologic con

Use of probiotics in prevention and treatment of patients with Clostridium difficile infection.

Clostridium difficile is an anaerobic, gram positive, sporulating, toxin-producing bacillus which causes a spectrum of clinical disease ranging from an asymptomatic carrier state to toxic megacolon and fulminant disease. Infection with C. difficile is an expensive and pervasive health care burden. The current theory regarding the development of C. difficile infection (CDI) suggests that disruption of the structure and/or function of an individual's normal intestinal microbiota enables colonization by C. difficile, and in the absence of an effective immune response, the bacteria causes illness.

Pulmonary embolism in an immunocompetent patient with acute cytomegalovirus colitis.

Acute cytomegalovirus (CMV) infection occurs commonly in immunocompromised and immunocompetent patients, but is usually asymptomatic in the latter. Vascular events associated with acute CMV infection have been described, but are rare. Hence, such events are rarely reported in the literature. We report a case of pulmonary embolism secondary to acute CMV colitis in an immunocompetent 78-year-old man. The patient presented with fever and diarrhea. Colonic ulcers were diagnosed based on colonoscopy findings, and CMV was the proven etiology on pathological examination. The patient subsequently expe

Molecular study of feline hemoplasmas in free- ranging fishing cats (Prionailurus viverrinus) in Thailand.

Feline hemoplasmas, consisting of Mycoplasma haemofelis (M. haemofelis), Candidatus Mycoplasma haemominutum (Ca. M. haemominutum), and Candidatus Mycoplasma turicensis (Ca. M. turicensis), cause feline infectious anemia and zoonoses. Using multiplex PCR and phylogenetic analysis based on 16S rRNA, 22 blood samples from fishing cats (Prionailurus viverrinus) living in Khao Sam Roi Yot National Park, Thailand were determined positive for M. haemofelis (13.6%)and Ca. M. haemominutum (22.7%). M. haemofelis and Ca. M. haemominutum infection can result severe anemia and asymptomatic, respectively. H

Rethinking the discharge policy for Ebola convalescents in an accelerating epidemic.

The outbreak of Ebola virus disease (EVD) in West Africa has outstripped available resources. Novel strategies are desperately needed to streamline operations. The present norm of requiring negative results on polymerase chain reaction for EVD convalescent patients to be discharged is not evidence-based and often results in asymptomatic patients competing for beds in dangerously crowded Ebola Treatment Units, posing risks to ward staff and patients and the community if infected persons are turned away. We summarize the relevant data and call for a change in discharge criteria for convalescent

Mansonic neuroschistosomiasis.

Mansonic neuroschistosomiasis (MN) is not only the most common but also the most serious ectopic presentation of the infection by Schistosoma mansoni. Both, brain and spinal cord can be independently affected by the infection, but the later is more frequently affected. Brain MN by itself is due to the presence of eggs and/or adult worms in situ and can be symptomatic or asymptomatic. Unlike the brain MN, spinal cord mansonic neuroschistosomiasis is more frequently symptomatic. In both forms the intensity, the seriousness and also the clinical characteristics of signs and symptoms depend on the

Asymptomatic transmission of Treponema pallidum (syphilis) through deceased donor liver transplantation.

A 55-year-old woman underwent liver transplantation (LT) with a graft from a deceased donor. Mandatory pre-donation investigations showed positive syphilis serology that was available only after the transplant, with high Treponema pallidum particle agglutination assay titer compatible with donor syphilis infection. Despite the institution of appropriate post-exposure prophylaxis, the recipient demonstrated latent seroconversion; however, liver graft function improved without evidence of syphilitic hepatitis or other manifestations of the disease. Through this first reported case of asymptomati
