Relation between empathy and aggression and behavior compliance among abused group home youth.

Physically abused youth are often described as more aggressive and noncompliant in comparison with normal children, despite inconclusive findings regarding the nature of behavior problems among these youth. The present study investigated whether empathy would be differentially related to aggression and behavior compliance of abused youth within the natural living context of a group home environment. As predicted, results suggest a strong, positive relationship between empathy and lower rates of interpersonal aggression and a strong positive relationship between empathy and higher rates of beha

Methamphetamine-induced striatal dopamine release, behavior changes and neurotoxicity in BALB/c mice.

The behaviors associated with the neurotoxic effects of methamphetamine were evaluated in BALB/c mice. Hyperthermia and behavioral observations were measured 60 min after each subcutaneous injection of methamphetamine (4x4 or 8 mg/kg) or saline, each given 2 h apart. The behavioral observations included stereotyped behaviors, incidence of hemorrhage in breast, salivation and self-injurious behavior (SIB). Repeated administration of methamphetamine produced these behavioral changes and hyperthermia, but resulted in hypothermia by the final injection (8 mg/kg). In addition, the methamphetamine t

Effect of thyroid hormone administration on estrogen-induced sex behavior in female mice.

Effects of thyroid hormones on reproductive processes have been described in sheep, birds, and rats. To extend this subject to mice for eventual analysis with genetically modified animals, we looked for effects of thyroid hormone treatment on lordosis behavior of ovariectomized estrogen-treated female mice. High doses of thyroid hormones reduced lordosis behavior. Since we could not explain this result by pharmacokinetic or peripheral effects, we infer that it worked by a central mechanism. Future investigations must determine whether endogenous fluctuations within the thyroid's normal physiol

Factors elevating cAMP attenuate the effects of 8-OH-DPAT on lordosis behavior.

The effects of a soluble derivative of forskolin and of two membrane-permeable analogs of cAMP, dibutyryl cAMP, and 8-bromo-cAMP, on the ability of a serotonin (5-HT)(1A) receptor agonist to inhibit lordosis behavior were examined. Sexually receptive, proestrous rats received a bilateral infusion into the ventromedial nucleus of the hypothalamus (VMN) with 68 ng of the forskolin derivative 1, 1.5, 2, or 2.5 h prior to infusion with 200 ng of the 5-HT(1A) receptor agonist, (+/-)-8-hydroxy-2-(di-n-propylamino)tetralin (8-OH-DPAT). Proestrous rats and ovariectomized rats, hormonally primed with 2

Epidermal growth factor activates reproductive behavior independent of ovarian steroids in female rodents.

Sex steroids exert profound influence on neural development and function through activation of intranuclear receptors. However, during sexual differentiation and at onset of puberty, intracerebral estrogen (E) availability is subsequent to these effects. The potent mitogen epidermal growth factor (EGF) activates estrogen receptor (ER)-dependent transcription in cultured cells in the absence of exogenous E. Since reproductive behavior in female rodents is the result of E-dependent transcriptional activity and protein synthesis, lordosis serves as a well established in vivo model for probing cel

Comparison of autotomy behavior induced in rats by various clinically-used neurectomy methods.

When a peripheral nerve is cut, a neuroma develops at its proximal end. Nerve-end neuromas are known to be a source of ectopic sensory input. In some humans this input may cause spontaneous and evoked neuropathic pain. There is currently no available animal model for developing better methods of cutting nerves that produce less painful neuromas than those currently in clinical use. Transection of the sciatic and saphenous nerves in rats also produces nerve-end neuromas. Afferent fibers in such neuromas spontaneously emit ectopic input that coincides with the outbreak of licking, scratching and

Mechanical behavior of calcified plaques: a summary of compression and stress-relaxation experiments.

This paper summarizes the results from mechanical testing of atherosclerotic plaques performed in the Cardiovascular Mechanics Laboratory and the Laboratory for Implantable Materials at UMBC. The motivation for our work is that balloon angioplasty, stenting, and roto-ablation are mechanical processes that are designed to permanently alter the shape of an occluded arterial lumen. The mechanisms of permanent plaque deformation are not known. Therefore, to study the mechanical behavior of plaques, we performed mechanical tests on atherosclerotic lesions with different compositions and investigate

Juvenile Parkinson's disease with REM sleep behavior disorder, sleepiness, and daytime REM onset.

We describe an unmedicated patient with juvenile PD with difficulties maintaining wakefulness and the atonia of REM sleep. Laboratory testing showed enhanced muscle activity in REM sleep consistent with a history of dream enactment behavior (i.e., REM sleep behavior disorder) and daytime sleepiness, and REM-sleep onsets on multiple sleep latency testing. The results emphasize the potential role of dopamine and basal ganglia circuits in the modulation of activated behavioral states (e.g., wakefulness and REM sleep).

Drug-seeking behavior in urolithiasis in the noncontrast computed tomography era: 2 cases.

Symptomatic urolithiasis is usually treated with narcotic pain management. This leads to the potential for use of its symptoms for personal gain. Historically, the typical presentation of a narcotic-seeking "stone patient" was a history of radiolucent stones and an intravenous contrast allergy. With the increased use of non-contrast-enhanced computed tomography to evaluate patients suspected of having acute urolithiasis, we have seen a change in the strategy of narcotic-seeking patients. We report 2 patients with pelvic calcifications on non-contrast-enhanced computed tomography feigning sympt

Risk factors for violent behavior among incarcerated male psychiatric patients: a multimethod approach.

A multimethod approach that included demographic, criminal offense, drug use, neuropsychological, Rorschach, psychiatric diagnosis, and psychopathy characteristics was used to evaluate 131 incarcerated male psychiatric inpatients. Each criminal offense was ranked from nonviolent to severely violent, and participants were classified as having lifetime histories of either high or low violent behavior. Univariate analyses revealed 12 characteristics which independently discriminated inmates with lifetime histories of high or low violent behavior (married, non-Caucasian race, Axis I psychotic diag

Actions of amylin on subfornical organ neurons and on drinking behavior in rats.

Amylin, a peptide hormone secreted by pancreatic beta-cells after food intake, contributes to metabolic control by regulating nutrient influx into the blood, whereas insulin promotes nutrient efflux and storage. We now report that amylin activates neurons in the subfornical organ (SFO), a structure in which the lack of a functional blood-brain barrier and the presence of a high density of amylin receptors may render it accessible and sensitive to circulating amylin. In an in vitro slice preparation of the rat SFO, 73% of 78 neurons were excited by superfusion with rat amylin (10(-8)-10(-7) M);

Breast and cervical cancer screening: knowledge, attitudes and behavior among schoolteachers in Italy.

The study explores knowledge, attitudes and behavior regarding screening for breast and cervical cancers. All female teachers in primary and secondary schools in Crotone and in Cassino (Italy) received a questionnaire on demographic and socioeconomic characteristics, clinical history, knowledge, behavior and attitudes about breast and cervical cancer and related screening procedures. A response rate of 65% was achieved. Knowledge on effectiveness of mammography and pap test in finding related cancers was widely spread in the sample. Only about 30% and 50% had respectively undergone their last

Effects of sensation seeking, instruction set, and alcohol/placebo administration on aggressive behavior.

Sixty-three male college students were assessed on the number of aversive sound blasts they administered in response to their fictitious task partner's blasts in a variation of the Taylor aggression paradigm. Subjects were randomly assigned to one of three alcohol dosing conditions (placebo, placebo/expect alcohol, and alcohol) and one of three instruction conditions (aggression-told the noise blasts were meant to disrupt task performance; altruism-told the noise blasts were meant to improve concentration; ambiguous-either aggression or altruism). A significant three-way interaction of dosing

Effect of digoxin imprinting in adolescence on the sexual behavior of adult rats.

Four-time 3 micrograms digoxin treatment of male rats at puberty (in six weeks old rats) significantly increased the libido of rats (number of intromissions) and reduced the number of ejaculations, two months after the treatments (in three and a half months old rats). In female rats the Meyerson index and lordosis quotient were not significantly decreased. The experiment calls attention to the wide-ranging imprinting effect of digoxin which was also demonstrated earlier after prenatal (maternal) treatment. The experiment also supports the male sexual potency influencing effect of digoxin treat

Paced mating behavior in female rats in response to different hormone priming regimens.

A female rat will display a repertoire of behaviors during a sexual encounter with a male rat including sexually receptive (the lordosis response) and proceptive (hopping, darting) behaviors. In addition, when given the opportunity, a sexually receptive female rat will approach and withdraw from the male rat, controlling the timing of the receipt of mounts, intromissions, and ejaculations, a behavior known as paced mating behavior. The present experiments tested the hypotheses (1) that progesterone regulates paced mating behavior, and (2) that multiple hormone regimens used previously to induc

The impact of HIV-related neuropsychological dysfunction on driving behavior. The HNRC Group.

HIV infection often results in neuropsychological (NP) impairment. In order to assess the impact that HIV-related NP deficits may have on automobile driving, we evaluated 68 HIV-seropositive drivers using an NP battery and two PC-based driving simulations. Thirty-two participants were classified as NP impaired; most (72%) evidenced only mild impairment, and none met criteria for HIV-associated dementia. After controlling for degree of immunosuppression and disease stage, NP-impaired participants failed a previously validated driving simulation at a much higher rate than cognitively intact part

Adolescent sexual behavior, drug use, and violence: increased reporting with computer survey technology.

Surveys of risk behaviors have been hobbled by their reliance on respondents to report accurately about engaging in behaviors that are highly sensitive and may be illegal. An audio computer-assisted self-interviewing (audio-CASI) technology for measuring those behaviors was tested with 1690 respondents in the 1995 National Survey of Adolescent Males. The respondents were randomly assigned to answer questions using either audio-CASI or a more traditional self-administered questionnaire. Estimates of the prevalence of male-male sex, injection drug use, and sexual contact with intravenous drug us

[Suicide by a borderline patient at the end of fatal self-destructive behavior].

The presence of a borderline personality disorder must also be considered in forensic medicine appraisements, beside the various motivations for a self injurious behaviour and apart from other psychiatric illnesses. This personality disorder is frequently characterized by cuts and scratches made by the patients using sharp objects to inflict themselves when in situations causing great psychological distress. A case of a young female student is presented who exhibited a clear auto-destructive behaviour. Due to a tragic psychodynamic development, she committed suicide by means of carbamazepine i
