Why do birds construct nest tails? A test of disruptive camouflage in the blue manakin.

Nests are extended phenotypes capable of providing brood protection against predators, and because they are motionless structures, camouflage is expected to emerge. Birds from different families construct a tail of hung materials underneath their nests, which has been hypothesized to be a type of disruptive camouflage, i.e. an appendage that gives a nest a false shape for hindering detection by predators. Predictions of this hypothesis are that for predators that are visually oriented, nests without a tail are easier to detect, yet this hypothesis never received support likely because predator

Bilateral asymmetry in craniofacial structures and kinematics of feeding attacks in the scale-eating cichlid fish, Perissodus microlepis.

Cichlid fishes are a textbook example for adaptive radiations, since they diversified into several hundred highly specialized species in each of three great East African lakes. Even scale-eating, an extremely specialized feeding mode, evolved independently multiple times in these radiations and in Lake Tanganyika alone, six endemic scale-eating species occupy this extremely specialized ecological niche. Perissodus microlepis went a step further, by evolving bilaterally asymmetrical heads with an intra-specific polymorphism where left- and right-headed morphs predominantly scrape scales from th

Current predation risk has opposing effects on social learning of foraging locations across two guppy populations.

Social learning, where animals learn from other individuals, occurs in many diverse species. The influential but debated 'costly information' hypothesis posits that animals will rely more on social information in high-risk contexts, such as under increased predation risk. We examined and compared the effects of perceived predation risk on social learning of foraging sites in female Trinidadian guppies from wild and domestic populations raised in common-garden environments. We used a demonstrator-observer pairing where a subject could observe conspecific 'demonstrators' feeding from one of two

Foraging dives of southern right whales (Eubalaena australis) in relation to larger zooplankton size prey availability in Golfo Nuevo, Península Valdés, Argentina.

Southern right whales (SRWs, Eubalaena australis) have been observed feeding both at and below the surface (< 10 m) in Golfo Nuevo (42°42' S, 64°30' W), Península Valdés, Argentina, an area traditionally recognized as calving ground. In addition, we documented diving feeding behavior in SRWs during their stay in this gulf, which has not been previously described. We assessed this behavior using suction-cup-attached video-imaging tags (CRITTERCAMs) on individual whales. A total of eight CRITTERCAM deployments were successful, and feeding events were documented in all SRWs successfully equipped

Patrolling the border: Billfish exploit the hypoxic boundary created by the world's largest oxygen minimum zone.

Pelagic predators must contend with low prey densities that are irregularly distributed and dynamic in space and time. Based on satellite imagery and telemetry data, many pelagic predators will concentrate horizontal movements on ephemeral surface fronts-gradients between water masses-because of enhanced local productivity and increased forage fish densities. Vertical fronts (e.g. thermoclines, oxyclines) can be spatially and temporally persistent, and aggregate lower trophic level and diel vertically migrating organisms due to sharp changes in temperature, water density or available oxygen. Relationships between dietary breadth and flexibility in jaw movement: A case study of two recently diverged insular populations of Podarcis lizards.

The kinematics of lizard feeding are the result of complex interactions between the craniocervical, the hyolingual, and the locomotor systems. The coordinated movement of these elements is driven by sensory feedback from the tongue and jaws during intraoral transport. The kinematics of jaw movements have been suggested to be correlated with the functional characteristics of the prey consumed, such as prey mobility and hardness. However, whether and how dietary breadth correlates with the flexibility in the behavioral response has rarely been tested, especially at the intraspecific level. Here

"Up" or "down" that makes the difference. How giant honeybees (Apis dorsata) see the world.

A. dorsata builds its large exposed comb high in trees or under ledges of high rocks. The "open" nest of A. dorsata, shielded (only!) by multiple layers of bees, is highly vulnerable to any kind of direct contact or close range attacks from predators. Therefore, guard bees of the outer layer of A. dorsata's nest monitor the vicinity for possible hazards and an effective risk assessment is required. Guard bees, however, are frequently exposed to different objects like leaves, twigs and other tree litter passing the nest from above and falling to the ground. Thus, downward movement of objects pa

Laboratory conditions matter: social housing in male and female laboratory mice in a multicenter study approach.

Despite numerous studies and literature reviews, the social housing of laboratory mice is still under debate. Aggression and social stress can lead to physiological and behavioral alterations, especially in male mice, whereas single housing is a potential source of discomfort, particularly in female mice. This multicenter study aimed to assess the impact of single versus group housing on severity in both sexes and to examine whether a general recommendation could be made. C57BL/6NRj mice from the same litters of a commercial breeder were housed either singly or in groups of four across four di

Genome-wide methylation patterns associated with chronic stress.

BACKGROUND: Chronic social defeat stress (CSDS) is a validated animal model for depression that produces sustained behavioral and transcriptional changes in the brain, notably the nucleus accumbens (nAcc). RESEARCH DESIGN AND METHODS: We used genome-wide analysis of cytosine methylation patterns in mouse nAcc following CSDS to identify candidate epigenetic mechanisms. RESULTS: CSDS produced extensive differential methylation, increasing CG hypermethylation compared to control conditions; non-CG methylation showed the opposite trend. Highly differentially methylated (DM) regions included seve

Buzzed but not elated? Effect of ethanol on cognitive judgement bias in honeybees.

Ethanol is a neuroactive compound known to alter cognition, behavior, and physiology in a diverse range of vertebrate and invertebrate animals. It is also naturally present in many environments and might exert influence on various organisms, such as honeybees feeding on fermenting nectar, reflecting on the ecological networks the organism is involved in. In this study, we tested whether exposure of honeybees to low ethanol concentrations (1%) induces 'pessimistic' or 'optimistic' cognitive judgment bias (CJB), an information processing pattern thought to be related to affective processes. Bees

Para-chlorophenylalanine induces multidimensional affective-like behaviors in adult zebrafish.

Affective disorders, such as depression and anxiety, pose major challenges to mental health worldwide. Serotonergic dysfunction has been widely implicated in their pathophysiology, although its contribution involves complex and context-dependent mechanisms. To explore the relationship between serotonin depletion and neurobehavioral responses in zebrafish (Danio rerio), animals were treated with para-chlorophenylalanine (pCPA), an inhibitor of tryptophan hydroxylase activity. Fish received two intraperitoneal injections of pCPA (300 mg/kg), with a 24-h interval between injections. Behavioral te

Cell-type Plasticity Supports Behavioral Adaptations at the Water-to-Land Interface.

Animals inhabiting aquatic or terrestrial habitats experience different constraints on their physiology and locomotion, and are exposed to fundamentally different sensory environments. Across evolutionary timescales, most species have adapted to live exclusively either in water or on land. Newts are among the vertebrates that defy this rule and split their adult lives between freshwater ponds and terrestrial habitats. In these amphibians, transitions across environments cause remarkable phenotypic plasticity in their body morphology. But whether and how the nervous system and behavior also ada

Changes in Melanopsin expression in the iris after corneal abrasion in an experimental rat model.

Melanopsin is a photoreceptive protein known to be important for non-image forming functions in the retina, where it is expressed in a small subset of retinal ganglion cells. Melanopsin is also found in the iris where it contributes to the pupillary light reflex in rodents, and in other tissues where its functions are not fully understood. This study assessed temporal changes in pain behavior (orbital tightening) and melanopsin immunofluorescence in the retina and iris in a corneal abrasion model. Pain behaviors peaked at 24 h after corneal abrasion and returned to near baseline levels at 1 we

Exploring Cognitive and Affective Outcomes Following Bilateral 6-Hydroxydopamine Lesions of the Substance Nigra or Striatum in Rats.

The majority of animal models of Parkinson's disease (PD) focus on motor symptoms that are induced by unilateral injections of such neurotoxins as 6-hydroxydopamine (6-OHDA) in nigrostriatal dopaminergic pathways. However, motor changes that are induced by unilateral 6-OHDA injections may interfere with the identification of cognitive and affective dysfunctions induced by dopaminergic neurodegeneration. To select an appropriate method for studying nonmotor symptoms of PD and potential neuroprotective treatments, the present study compared behavioral effects of bilateral 6-OHDA infusions direct

Sex-dependent disruption of affective behaviors by GBR 12909: relevance to bipolar disorders.

Bipolar disorders (BD) are defined by a chronic recurrence of manic and depressive phases. Along with mood, acute phases are associated with altered emotions. The biological underpinnings of these changes are unresolved, mostly because modeling the cycling nature of BD is still a major challenge in preclinical studies. One pharmacological model is based on GBR 12909 administration, a dopamine transporter inhibitor aiming at mimicking some dimensions of mania. Recent findings indicate that this model generates a mixed phenotype, combining hyperlocomotion with negative hedonic biases and anxiety

When Affection Becomes Risk: Human-Dog Interactions Associated with Bite and Scratch Injuries in a Survey of Dog Owners' Knowledge, Attitudes, and Practices in Thailand.

Owning a pet dog provides significant mental and physical health benefits for humans. However, undesirable canine behaviors may result in bite or scratch injuries, leading to infection risks, psychological consequences, and potential dog abandonment. This study hypothesized that specific human-dog interactions are associated with unwanted canine behaviors and may increase the risk of injury in humans. The objectives were to determine the prevalence of dog-related bite and scratch injuries; assess dog owners' knowledge, attitudes, and practices; and evaluate their associations with specific int

Neuroinflammation, blood-brain barrier dysfunction, and cognitive decline in pulmonary arterial hypertension: an experimental study.

Pulmonary arterial hypertension is a progressive disorder characterized by elevated pulmonary vascular resistance and right ventricular hypertrophy. Beyond cardiopulmonary impairment, patients with PAH often present neuropsychological symptoms, suggesting central nervous system involvement. To explore this link, we evaluated cognitive, behavioral performance and neuroinflammatory changes during experimental PAH progression. Male Wistar rats received monocrotaline (60 mg/kg, intraperitoneally) or saline. After 14 days, motor activity, anxiety-like behavior, and recognition memory were assessed
