Phencyclidine-like discriminative stimulus properties of opioids in the squirrel monkey.

The opioids SKF 10047, dl-cyclazocine, and dextrorphan have been shown to have phencyclidine (PCP)-like discriminative stimulus properties in the rat. In order to extend the generality of this observation, the stimulus effect of these and other opioids were evaluated in squirrel monkeys trained to discriminate between IM injections of saline and 0.25 mg/kg of PCP in a two-choice discrete-trial avoidance paradigm. Stimulus control of behavior was characterized by the reliable completion of at least 22 trials of a 25-trial session on the appropriate choice lever after an injection of saline or P

Study on thermal adaptation behaviors of bus passengers.

Thermal comfort (TC) inside buses has always been a key consideration for passengers when traveling. Although numerous studies and policies have explored and guided air conditioning standards for buses, research on passengers' thermal adaptation behaviors remains scarce-particularly in the context of widespread dissatisfaction with the thermal environment on buses. In this study, we adopted a mixed-methods approach and developed a new integrated research model to investigate passengers' thermal adaptation behaviors and their influencing factors. By constructing a theoretical framework for bus

Understanding Dysregulated Behaviors and Compulsions: An Extension of the Emotional Cascade Model and the Mediating Role of Intrusive Thoughts.

OBJECTIVE: The Emotional Cascade Model (ECM) by Selby et al. (2008) proposes that people often engage in dysregulated behaviors to end extreme, aversive emotional states triggered by a self-perpetuating vicious cycle of (excessive) rumination, negative affect, and attempts to suppress negative thoughts. METHOD: Besides replicating the ECM, we introduced intrusions as a mediator between rumination and behavioral dysregulation and tested this extended ECM for compulsions as part of obsessive-compulsive disorders. A structural equation modeling approach was used to test this in a sample of N = 4

Health Risk Behaviors by Length of Time in the United States Among High School Students in Five Sites.

One in five public school students is from an immigrant-headed household. We used Youth Risk Behavior Survey data from one state and four large urban school districts to examine whether length of time living in the US was associated with health risk behaviors. Logistic regression models, using weighted data, controlled for sex, race/ethnicity, and grade. Compared to US natives, not having always lived in the US was correlated with lower risk for some behaviors (e.g., current marijuana use and alcohol use) among high school students, but higher risk for other behaviors (e.g., attempted suicide,

Frontostriatal circuits and the development of bulimia nervosa.

Bulimia nervosa (BN) is characterized by both recurrent episodes of binge eating that are, in part, defined by a sense of loss of control and compensatory behaviors to avoid weight gain. Impulsive behaviors are also common in individuals with BN, indicating more pervasive difficulties in behavioral self-regulation. Findings from functional and anatomical neuroimaging studies of individuals with BN suggest dysfunction in the dorsal frontostriatal circuits that support self-regulatory capacities and habit learning and in overlapping ventral circuits that support reward processing and reward-base

Diversification of takeout, a male-biased gene family in Drosophila.

The display of courtship behavior has evolved in response to sexual selection driven by competition to obtain mates. Sexually dimorphic mate selection rituals are likely controlled at least in part by genes with sex-biased patterns of expression. In Drosophila melanogaster, male courtship behavior has been well described and consists of a series of stereotyped behaviors. The takeout gene is predominantly expressed in males and affects male courtship behavior. In this study, we examine the patterns of expression and evolution in takeout and the family of related proteins. We show that a number

The role of formative research in the National HIV Behavioral Surveillance System.

The National Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) Behavioral Surveillance System (NHBS) is the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's (CDC's) newest system for measuring HIV risk behaviors among three adult populations at highest risk for HIV infection in the U.S.: men who have sex with men, injecting drug users, and heterosexuals at risk of HIV infection. The system is implemented by state and local health departments in designated metropolitan statistical areas with the highest HIV/acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS) prevalence in the U.S. Prior to implementing the behavioral surve

Pathways to risk among inner-city African-American adolescent females: the influence of gang membership.

Differential rates of participation in three categories of risk behaviors (i.e., sexual activity, substance use, violence) were explored, comparing gang members to nonmembers, within a sample of 1,143 inner-city African American adolescent females. The relationship between gang membership and risk behavior also was examined, by exploring the association between a variety of microsystemic influences (e.g., gang, family, school) and participation in risk behaviors. MANOVA analyses indicated that gang members, relative to nonmembers, reported higher rates of participation in each of the three cat

Eating disorder behaviors of ethnically diverse urban female adolescent athletes and non-athletes.

This study compared Caucasian, Hispanic, and African-American urban adolescent athlete and non-athlete females for relative frequency of behavioral and psychological indices of eating disorders, while controlling for physical size. High school female athletes (n=571) and non-athletes (n=463) completed the Eating Disorder Inventory (EDI) composed of eight subscales that measure behavioral and psychological indices common in anorexia nervosa and bulimia nervosa. The MANCOVA for the main effect of ethnicity showed Caucasians and Hispanics scored significantly higher than African-Americans on six

Effects of a skin refrigerant/anesthetic and age on the pain responses of infants receiving immunizations.

Although pain management is an important nursing responsibility, few interventions for minimizing distress of infants during painful procedures have been studied. Sixty infants, 2 through 6 months of age, were studied during a routine DPT immunization in order to examine (a) the effectiveness of cooling the skin in reducing distress behaviors and (b) the relationship between age and distress behavior. Infants were randomly assigned to experimental or control groups. Prior to the injection, the sites were sprayed for 2 to 3 s with either a skin refrigerant/anesthetic or compressed air. Behavior

A cortico-cerebellar neural model for task control under incomplete instructions.

Cerebellar-inspired motor control systems have been widely explored in robotics to achieve biologically plausible movement generation. However, most existing models rely heavily on high-dimensional instruction inputs during training, diverging from the input-efficient control observed in biological systems. In humans, effective motor learning often based on sparse or incomplete external feedback. It is possibly attributed to the interaction between multiple brain regions, especially the cortex and the cerebellum. In this study, we present a hierarchical cortico-cerebellar neural network model

Barrier function-based prescribed performance trajectory tracking control of wheelchair upper-limb exoskeleton robot under actuator fault and external disturbance: Experimental verification.

This paper presents an innovative control strategy for the trajectory tracking of wheelchair upper-limb exoskeleton robots, integrating sliding mode control with a barrier function-based prescribed performance approach to handle actuator faults and external disturbances. The dynamic model of the exoskeleton robot is first extended to account for these uncertainties. The control design is then divided into two phases. In the first phase, the sliding mode control technique is applied to ensure robust trajectory tracking by defining the tracking error between the robot's states and desired trajec

Parenting and Sibling Relationships in Family with Disruptive Behavior Disorders. Are Non-Clinical Siblings More Vulnerable for Emotional and Behavioral Problems?

Disruptive Behavior Disorders (DBD) are the most common mental health disorders in the school-aged child population. Although harsh parenting is a key risk factor in the shaping of DBD, studies neglect the presence of siblings and differential parenting. This study aims to compare: (1) parenting style and sibling relationship in sibling dyads of clinical families, composed of a DBD child and a non-clinical sibling, with control families composed of two non-clinical siblings; (2) parenting style, sibling relationship, and emotional and behavioral problems in DBD child, non-clinical sibling, and

Intermolecular interactions modulate the assembly and structure of Gli-CMCS nanoparticles and their influence on quercetin encapsulation and digestive release.

Gliadin nanoparticles are promising carriers for hydrophobic bioactive compounds; however, their poor colloidal stability and limited control over gastrointestinal release restrict practical applications. Although gliadin-carboxymethyl chitosan (Gli-CMCS) nanoparticles have recently been developed for bioactive delivery, the molecular mechanisms by which specific intermolecular interactions contribute to nanoparticle assembly, structural evolution, and digestive release behavior remain insufficiently understood. This study aimed to develop Gli-CMCS nanoparticles as delivery carriers for querce

Maternal immune activation influences social behavior development in a nonhuman primate model.

BACKGROUND: Women exposed to infection during pregnancy have an increased risk of giving birth to a child who will later be diagnosed with neurodevelopmental disorders (NDDs) characterized by changes in social development, such as autism and schizophrenia. Preclinical rodent models of maternal immune activation (MIA) have established causal links between elevated maternal cytokines and offspring social deficits indicative of human NDDs. METHODS: Here, we use a unique nonhuman primate (NHP) MIA model to explore the longitudinal development of social behavior, given their phylogenetic similarit

The contribution of endocytic mediators to itch transmission.

Chronic itch is a major burden, impacting the quality of life for one in four adults, and is closely associated with increased levels of anxiety, depression, and suicide. Despite its widespread burden, the precise mechanisms driving and sustaining chronic itch remain poorly understood. Non-histaminergic itch transmission in the spinal cord relies on the synaptic vesicle (SV) release of gastrin-releasing peptide (GRP) and the subsequent binding to the Gastrin-Releasing Peptide Receptor (GRPR). While SV exocytosis facilitates neurotransmitter release, such as GRP, SV endocytosis, mediated by key

Frontal Vulnerability versus Temporal Resilience within the Core Language Network: Neuro-compensatory Mechanisms Underline Differential Language Aging Trajectories.

Age-related decline underlies cognitive functions such as sensorimotor control, executive functioning, memory, and language production (LP), whereas language comprehension (LC) tends to remain intact or improve across healthy adult lifespan. This preservation likely stems from structural and functional integrity within core language network (cLAN) regions. To investigate this hypothesis, we analyzed the relationships among brain's resting-state functional connectivity (FC), structural connectivity (SC), and language behavior (LC and LP) using a cross-sectional cohort of healthy adults (N = 652

Selective Breeding for Voluntary Wheel-Running Behavior in Mice is not Associated with Reduced Lifetime Reproductive Success or Lifespan Under Long-Term Paired Breeding Conditions.

We studied lifespan and lifetime reproductive success (LRS) in mice from a selection experiment that includes 4 replicate High Runner (HR) lines bred for voluntary wheel-running behavior and 4 non-selected Control (C) lines. HR mice typically run ~ threefold farther on a daily basis, leading to substantially increased energy expenditure and food consumption, and are also more active and eat more when housed without wheels. HR and C mice have been shown to differ for many other traits that could affect reproduction, including body mass and composition, aerobic capacity, hormonal profile (includ
