Risk for depression tripled during the COVID-19 pandemic in emerging adults followed for the last 8 years.

BACKGROUND: The coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic has significantly increased depression rates, particularly in emerging adults. The aim of this study was to examine longitudinal changes in depression risk before and during COVID-19 in a cohort of emerging adults in the U.S. and to determine whether prior drinking or sleep habits could predict the severity of depressive symptoms during the pandemic. METHODS: Participants were 525 emerging adults from the National Consortium on Alcohol and NeuroDevelopment in Adolescence (NCANDA), a five-site community sample including moderate-to-h

Angiogenic Secretion Profile of Valvular Interstitial Cells Varies With Cellular Sex and Phenotype.

Angiogenesis is a hallmark of fibrocalcific aortic valve disease (CAVD). An imbalance of pro- and anti-angiogenic factors is thought to play a role in driving this disease process, and valvular interstitial cells (VICs) may act as a significant source of these factors. CAVD is also known to exhibit sexual dimorphism in its presentation, and previous work suggested that VICs may exhibit cellular-scale sex differences in the context of angiogenesis. The current study sought to investigate the production of angiogenesis-related factors by male and female VICs possessing quiescent (qVIC) or activa

Measurement invariance of the Childhood Autism Rating Scale (CARS) across six countries.

The Childhood Autism Rating Scale (CARS) is a simple and inexpensive tool for Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) assessments, with evidenced psychometric data from different countries. However, it is still unclear whether ASD symptoms are measured the same way across different societies and world regions with this tool, since data on its cross-cultural validity are lacking. This study evaluated the cross-cultural measurement invariance of the CARS among children with ASD from six countries, for whom data were aggregated from previous studies in India (n = 101), Jamaica (n = 139), Mexico (n = 72),

Novel Opipramol-Baclofen Combination Alleviates Depression and Craving and Facilitates Recovery From Substance Use Disorder-An Animal Model and a Human Study.

Substance use disorders (SUDs) are associated with depression and anxiety, with the latter being one of the major factors in substance-seeking and relapse. Due to dose-dependent sedative side effects there is limited efficacy of baclofen treatment for SUDs. Here we suggest the use of a novel combination of opipramol and baclofen (O/B) which is known to attenuate anxiety and depression, for the facilitation of recovery from SUDs. Since both opipramol and baclofen have a common downstream signal transduction, their individual doses could be reduced while still maintaining the benefits of the com

Brief Psychotic Disorder During the National Lockdown in Italy: An Emerging Clinical Phenomenon of the COVID-19 Pandemic.

The impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on psychosis remains to be established. Here we report 6 cases (3 male and 3 female) of first-episode psychosis (FEP) admitted to our hospital in the second month of national lockdown. All patients underwent routine laboratory tests and a standardized assessment of psychopathology. Hospitalization was required due to the severity of behavioral abnormalities in the context of a full-blown psychosis (the Brief Psychiatric Rating Scale [BPRS] = 75.8 ± 14.6). Blood tests, toxicological urine screening, and brain imaging were unremarkable, with the exception of a

The palmomental reflex in amyotrophic lateral sclerosis - a clinical sign of executive or motor dysfunction?

Objective: The palmomental reflex (PMR) is commonly interpreted as a frontal release sign, but it has also been discussed as a clinical marker of motoneuron affection in amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS). The aim of this study was to investigate the impact of motor dysfunction versus neurocognitive impairment on the appearance of PMR in amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS). Methods: 97 patients with ALS and ALS-variants were enrolled in this prospective, cross-sectional study. PMR was examined in a standardized procedure and the neurocognitive profile was assessed using the Edinburgh Cognitiv

Body mass index and atypical balance as predictors of winter depression remission in cognitive-behavioral therapy and light therapy.

BACKGROUND: Efficacious treatments for winter seasonal affective disorder (SAD) include light therapy (LT) and cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT-SAD); however, baseline characteristics may differentially predict treatment outcomes. This study investigated body mass index (BMI) and atypical balance (the proportion of atypical depression symptoms), as predictors of depression remission. METHODS: The parent study randomized 177 adults diagnosed with Major Depression, Recurrent with Seasonal Pattern to 6-weeks of CBT-SAD (n = 88) or LT (n = 89) and followed participants one and two winters later.

Autistic traits in young adults who gamble.

BACKGROUND.: Little is known about the relationship between autistic traits and addictive behaviors such as problem gambling. Thus, the present study examined clinical characteristics and multiple facets of cognition in young adults who gamble and have autistic traits. METHODS.: A total of 102 young adults who gamble were recruited from two Mid-Western university communities in the United States using media advertisements. Autistic traits were examined using the brief Autism-Spectrum Quotient (AQ-10). Clinician rating scales, questionnaires, and cognitive tests were completed. Relationships b

How Well Do Couples Care When They Are Expecting Their First Child? Family and Dyadic Predictors of Parental Sensitivity in Expectant Couples.

Belsky's Process Model points to family-of-origin (especially experiences of mistreatment in childhood) as well as personality and marital relations as determinants of parenting quality, including parental sensitive responsiveness. Parental sensitivity might be intuitively developed during pregnancy and affects perinatal mental health. However, there is a lack of studies investigating effects of family-of-origin and relationship perceptions on expectant couples' parental sensitive responsiveness. The aim of the presented study was to test mediation and moderation effects of perceived partner's

Natural history of excessive daytime sleepiness: a population-based 5-year longitudinal study.

STUDY OBJECTIVES: To document the rates of persistent, remitted, and intermittent excessive daytime sleepiness (EDS) in a longitudinal 5-year community study of adults and to assess how changes in risk factors over time can predict improvement of daytime sleepiness (DS). METHODS: Participants were recruited in 2007-2008 as part of a population-based epidemiological study implemented in Canada. They completed postal assessments at baseline and at each yearly follow-up. An Epworth Sleepiness Scale total score >10 indicated clinically significant EDS; a 4-point reduction between two consecutive

Testing the cross-stressor hypothesis under real-world conditions: exercise as a moderator of the association between momentary anxiety and cardiovascular responses.

The cross-stressor adaptation hypothesis of exercise training has not been investigated under real-life conditions. Using ecological momentary assessment, we tested whether usual exercise level moderates the relationship of self-reported anxiety to concurrent ambulatory heart rate (HR) and systolic/diastolic blood pressure (SBP/DBP). Participants (N = 832) completed 24-h ambulatory monitoring of HR/BP, using a brachial BP cuff that took readings at 28-min intervals. Anxiety levels were concurrently reported on a visual analog scale (VAS) using a Palm Pilot. Usual exercise behavior was assessed

Novel minimally invasive transoral surgery bleeding model implemented in a nationwide otolaryngology emergencies bootcamp.

Post-operative hemorrhage is the most concerning complication after minimally invasive transoral surgery, as can result in airway compromise. Simulation-based medical education provides trainees with structured learning in an intensive and immersive environment allowing deliberate practice of skills and behaviors in the management of real-life situations. We implemented a novel post-oropharyngeal surgery bleeding model in a nationwide otolaryngology emergencies bootcamp, to teach and evaluate technical and non-technical skills required to competently manage this clinical scenario. 28 Otolaryng

Assessment of adherence to iron supplementation among pregnant women in the Yaounde gynaeco-obstetric and paediatric hospital.

INTRODUCTION: Anemia is a global problem affecting 41.8% of pregnant women. Iron deficiency is the leading cause during pregnancy. Its prevalence among Cameroonian pregnant women was estimated at 50.9% in 2004. Few studies have evaluated women's adherence to iron supplementation prescribed during pregnancy. We carried this study in order to evaluate the rate of adherence to iron supplementation and its determinants during pregnancy. METHODS: The study was cross-sectional descriptive, on postpartum women at the Gynaeco-Obstetric and Pediatric Hospital of Yaoundé during three months. Adherence

The Validity of Skin Conductance For Assessing Acute Pain in Infants: A Scoping Review.

OBJECTIVES: Measuring pain in infants is important but challenging, as there is no "gold standard." The measurement of skin conductance (SC) is considered to be a measure of stress and as a surrogate indicator of pain. The objectives of this study were to identify the extent of research conducted and to synthesize the validity evidence of SC for assessing acute pain in infants. METHODS: The Arksey and O'Malley framework for scoping reviews was followed, and 9 electronic databases were searched. Data were analyzed thematically and presented descriptively including the following main categories

Craving for heroin: difference between methadone maintenance therapy patients with and without ADHD.

INTRODUCTION: Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is a neurodevelopmental disorder persisting in adulthood in 40-60% of cases. Clinical and neuroimaging studies suggest that patients affected by both drug addiction and ADHD show higher rates of craving for drug than patients without ADHD. We designed a pilot open-label study to investigate the effects of ADHD on craving for heroin in methadone maintenance therapy patients. METHOD: Patients were recruited from outpatient facilities in an addiction treatment unit in the municipality of Alba, Italy. They were assessed using the Struc

Eveningness is associated with poor sleep quality and negative affect in obsessive-compulsive disorder.

Background Obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) is characterized by intrusive thoughts and repetitive behaviors that severely encumber daily functioning. OCD patients seem to exhibit sleep disturbances, especially delayed bedtimes that reflect disrupted circadian rhythmicity. Morningness-eveningness is a fundamental factor reflecting individual variations in diurnal preferences related to sleep and waking activities. Eveningness reflecting a delayed sleep-wake timing has repeatedly been associated with sleep problems and negative affect (NA). Therefore, the aim of this study was to examine the
