Subject-specific musculoskeletal (MSK) models with individualized anthropometric features are essential for accurate biomechanical analysis, given the considerable anatomical and mechanical variability across individuals. Marker-based scaling provides a noninvasive, efficient, and cost-effective strategy for personalizing generic MSK models, yet its reliability and accuracy remain insufficiently validated. This study proposes a hybrid scaling approach (FlexiScale), which combines segment-wise linear scaling with global nonlinear morphing based on radial basis function (RBF) interpolation. This

Total knee arthroplasty (TKA) is one of the most effective treatments for end-stage knee osteoarthritis (∼1 million annual surgeries globally), where the biomechanical stability of the implanted prosthesis is crucial for lower limb mechanical axis alignment and postoperative normal gait. Most surgical failures and revisions are caused by intraoperative soft tissue imbalance. It heavily relies on surgeons' experience. Here, we present a wireless digital system featuring an ultrathin finger pulp-inspired flexible pressure sensor array, enabling balance monitoring in the clearance between the tib

Breaststroke performance is highly dependent on lower-limb biomechanics and the coordination of movement during the kick cycle. Recent advances in wearable inertial sensor technology enable objective analysis of human motion in real training environments. This study presents an exploratory pilot investigation aimed at evaluating the feasibility of using wearable inertial sensors for biomechanical analysis of the breaststroke kick in young swimmers. Five male children (aged 8-10 years) with basic breaststroke proficiency participated in a single-group pre-post exploratory study conducted over a

INTRODUCTION: "Cut-in" is a rare but serious complication associated with cephalomedullary nail fixation for intertrochanteric hip fractures, particularly with Proximal Femoral Nail Antirotation (PFNA). This phenomenon involves paradoxical superomedial migration of the helical blade through the femoral head. Although increasingly recognised, the underlying mechanisms remain incompletely defined. This study aims to describe a new superolateral tensile loading set up in a bidirectional loading model, with the aim of incorporating possible mechanical deviations introduced by abductor weakness.

Lower-limb exoskeleton robots play a pivotal role in rehabilitation medicine and assistive augmentation, where precise dynamic modelling and trajectory tracking control are fundamental to effective assistance. Existing models predominantly focus on hip and knee rotational degrees of freedom, with insufficient attention to ankle dynamics and pelvic translation. To address these limitations, this paper establishes a sagittal-plane dynamic model comprising nine generalised coordinates, treating the human lower limb and exoskeleton as an integrated coupled system. A seven-segment kinematic model e

The ultrasoft nature and intricate geometry of the 'butterfly-shaped' spinal cord gray matter, surrounded by white matter, pose major challenges for experimental and computational characterization of tissue mechanics. With growing interest in modeling spinal cord injury, disease, and regeneration, reliable mechanical data are increasingly needed. To meet this demand, we developed a multimodal characterization pipeline, combining mesoscale spherical indentation of gray and white matter, macroscale rheometer-based compression-tension tests, nonlinear continuum mechanics modeling, and inverse fin

The aim of this study was to assess the effect of gaze direction instruction on postural stabilisation and muscle activity during landings after various motor tasks in artistic gymnastics. Eighteen female gymnasts (aged 14.0 ± 2.7 years) performed four different landing tasks: drop landing, backward somersault, forward somersault (SF) and a backward acrobatic series (AS). Gaze was directed either downward or straight ahead during landings. Muscle activity was recorded from six lower limb muscles and postural stabilisation was assessed using dynamic stability indices and time to stabilisation.

BACKGROUND: Trunk movement plays a vital role in daily activities, influencing efficiency, balance, and musculoskeletal health-especially in individuals with neurological conditions. However, three-dimensional (3D) motion analysis of the trunk lacks standardisation, limiting both cross-study comparisons and clinical application. This review synthesises current approaches to trunk modelling, including marker setups, segment definitions, and kinematic outcomes, in studies involving participants with neurological conditions.
METHODS: A systematic search of six databases, including MEDLINE and Sc

BACKGROUND: Bradykinesia, a core feature of Parkinson’s disease (PD), often emerges early in disease progression but remains challenging to quantify objectively. Conventional assessments rely on visual scoring by experts, which is subjective, time-consuming, and difficult to scale. METHODS: We developed and validated an AI-driven, video-based system for automated detection of PD from short recordings of the finger-tapping task. Videos from 51 people with PD (pwPD, rated as normal or having slight motor dysfunction by a trained clinician on the MDS-UPDRS finger-tapping item) and 43 healthy cont

This study investigated whether midsole support plate material alters lower-limb biomechanics during common basketball-specific tasks. Twenty recreational male collegiate basketball players performed countermovement jumps, 45° cutting, and lateral shuffling in a standardized shoe under three conditions: carbon fiber plate, nylon plate, and no plate. Ground reaction forces, lower-limb joint moments (metatarsophalangeal, ankle, and knee), and surface electromyography (sEMG) from key lower-limb muscles were collected and processed using a consistent inverse-dynamics and sEMG processing pipeline.

BACKGROUND: Knee osteoarthritis is a degenerative condition characterized by pain and increased gait variability. Lateral wedge insoles are prescribed to reduce medial knee joint loading; however, their effects on lower-limb joint coordination variability, pain, and comfort when combined with different footwear remain unclear. This study examined lateral wedge insoles worn with conventional sandals and researcher-made slipper socks in women with knee osteoarthritis.
METHODS: A within-subject design was conducted with 23 women (aged 45-65) diagnosed with bilateral medial compartment knee osteo

This study aimed to investigate the impact of different types of compression legwear on knee biomechanics, and lower limb inter-joint coordination during depth jumps. Twelve healthy male participants were randomly assigned to wear compression shorts (CS), compression tights (CT), and sports shorts (control: CC). The participants perform depth jumps from a platform of 40 cm in height, thus landing on their dominant side (DS) and non-dominant side (NS). The lower limbs kinematics and kinetics are simultaneously recorded by using a motion capture system and force plates. During initial contact ph

Scapular dyskinesis (SD) is prevalent among overhead athletes and associated with dysfunctions of the rotator cuff. Although the musculotendinous architecture of the supraspinatus changes with arm elevation, the influence of scapular kinematics remains unclear. Thus, this study aimed to investigate the dynamic changes in the supraspinatus's musculotendinous architecture and its association with scapular kinematics during scaption in participants with SD. Twenty-one asymptomatic male college volleyball players with type I SD were recruited. Participants were asked to perform scaption from 0° to

Muscle disorders such as myofibrillar myopathies and Duchenne muscular dystrophy involve mutations in key cytoskeletal proteins and lead to progressive muscle degeneration. Yet, the mechanical characterization of affected muscle cells has relied mainly on immature or non-human models. Here, we introduce a human in vitro platform based on patient-derived immortalized myoblasts differentiated into myotubes on nanogrooved substrates, which promote alignment and organotypic maturation. Using immunostaining and atomic force microscopy (AFM), we show that desmin- and dystrophin-mutated myotubes exhi

IMPORTANCE: Over the past decades, the number of patients, especially in the older adult patient group, diagnosed with vestibular schwannoma (VS) has increased. Assuming that older adult patients have more comorbidities, a longer recovery period after surgery, a higher rate of surgical complications, and a higher mortality rate after VS surgery, a treatment strategy for this group of patients is warranted, based on clinical evidence on postsurgical survival.
OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the survival after diagnosis of a VS in patients 70 years and older, treated with either observation or surgery,

Menopause plays an important role in altering the biomechanical properties of the pelvic floor and the potential development of pelvic organ prolapse. There is limited evidence examining how menopause and aging impact the viscoelastic properties of vaginal tissue. Here, we used 21 female Long-Evans rats. Two cohorts were equally divided (n = 6 per cohort) to undergo Sham surgery or ovariectomy (OVX) at 3-4 months of age, and the remaining were aged to 20-24 months. We performed unconfined compression on 1 mm biopsy samples of mid-vaginal tissue subjected to stress relaxations at 5% and 10% str

PURPOSE: This study aimed to compare the biomechanical properties of one-knot and two-knot configurations in eight-strand flexor tendon repair using looped sutures. The influence of knot-tying strategy on gap resistance and ultimate failure strength was evaluated using a standardized porcine Achilles tendon model.
METHODS: Sixteen fresh porcine Achilles tendons were transected and randomly assigned to one-knot or two-knot repair groups (n = 8 per group). Repairs were performed using an eight-strand core suture technique with a single 4-0 looped suture-based on a modified Adelaide repair. Biom

Several studies have examined the force achieved by elite or professional fighters by fist punches and knee strikes, but only a few studies investigated the performance of average young persons without martial arts or boxing experience. Ten healthy men and ten healthy women were required to strike a padded force-measuring plate at a right angle ten times as hard as possible with head butts, fist punches, elbow blows, and knee strikes. Age, sex, body size, and mass were compared to the impact forces generated by the different striking modes. The highest striking force was achieved with knee str
