A method has been developed for the analysis of unbound salicylate by membrane cone ultrafiltration of either whole blood or plasma with quantitation by spectrofluorometry. The method was used to study the distribution of salicylate in whole blood over a wide range of concentrations. It was found that at a concentration of 50 ug/ml in whole blood only 9% of the salicylate is present as free drug in the plasma water, while at a concentration of 500 ug/ml, 23% is free. Participation of blood born cells in rat Masugi nephritis was investigated with ultrastructural demonstration of peroxidase, in addition to conventional light and electron microscopies. Polymorphonuclear leukocytes appear immediately and transiently after injection of nephrotoxic serum. Hypercellularity in the early stage of the disease is consisted mainly of monocyte-macrophage. Proteinuria and infiltration of few monocytes are persistent through the course up to 124 days and focal sclerosis with hyaline material appears in the later stage.

Subendocardial blood flow may be estimated from the ratio of flow to the subendocardium to myocardial oxygen consumption. The first may be estimated from the diastolic pressure time index (area between aortic and left ventricular (LV) pressure during diastole) and the latter by the tension time index (integral of LV pressure during systolic ejection). The total 5-hydroxyindoles (5HI) in whole blood were measured in 20 migraine patients during spontaneous migraine attacks and in headache-free periods. It was shown by the modified method of agar cultures that in the peripheral blood of a healthy man, aged from 4 days to 40 years. The number of cell precursors of granulocytes and macrophages (CFU-C) varied from 0.05 to 6.38 in adults and from 0.2 to 2.9 in children per 105 nuclear cells. CFU-C content in the patients with infectious mononucleosis and acute leukemia was 0.5--14 and 0--0.3 per 105 nuclear cells, respectively.

Although brain concentration of anaesthetic agents is attractive as a method of expressing anaesthetic potency, both theoretical and practical considerations limit the usefulness of this index. Therefore, the MAC concept has been utilized to develop another expression of potency: the minimum blood concentration. This takes into account the blood/gas solubility coefficient, and the fact that at equilibrium the amount of anaesthetic agent present in brain is reflected in the blood concentration, and it is applicable to both parenteral and to inhalation anaesthetic agents.
