A short-term, high-caloric diet has prolonged effects on brain insulin action in men.

Brain insulin responsiveness is linked to long-term weight gain and unhealthy body fat distribution. Here we show that short-term overeating with calorie-rich sweet and fatty foods triggers liver fat accumulation and disrupted brain insulin action that outlasted the time-frame of its consumption in healthy weight men. Hence, brain response to insulin can adapt to short-term changes in diet before weight gain and may facilitate the development of obesity and associated diseases.

Obesity and the Obesity Paradox in Heart Failure.

Obesity continues to be a public health problem in the general population, and also significantly increases the risk for the development of new-onset heart failure (HF). However, in patients with already-established, chronic HF, overweight and mild to moderate obesity is associated with substantially improved survival compared to normal weight patients; this has been termed the "obesity paradox". The majority of studies measure obesity by body mass index, but studies utilizing less-frequently used measures of body fat and body composition, including waist circumference, waist-hip ratio, skinfo

Forces in the knee joint whilst rising from a seated position.

Knee joint forces were determined by kinesiological techniques, using a high speed cine camera, a force platform, a specially constructed dynamometerized chair, and EMG recorders; so that a comparison could be made for rising from a normal chair with and without the aid of arms, and for rising from high and low chairs. For rising from the seated position, the knee joint forces parallel to the long axis of the tibia at the point of contact between the tibia and femur were found to be up to seven times body weight at about the time when the body left contact with the chair. When rising from a ch

Life Satisfaction and Obesity Across the Lifespan: A Scoping Review.

BACKGROUND/INTRODUCTION: Emerging literature links life dissatisfaction with maladaptive coping mechanisms, including compulsive eating, particularly in environments with limited health-promoting resources. This study explores how life satisfaction interacts with psychological and sociostructural factors to influence obesity risk, with a focus on the role of weight perception across the lifespan. METHODS: A thorough search was conducted, and data were uploaded in Covidence, a validated website-based screening and data extraction tool. After an extensive review process, 83 studies remained for

Efficacy of providing energy expenditure information to guide weight loss interventions in people with obesity: A randomized controlled trial.

Resting energy expenditure (REE) and metabolic fuel utilization (carbohydrate or fat) proxied by respiratory quotient (RQ) from indirect calorimetry enables more precise measurement of energy needs and fat oxidation capacity. The study compared the effectiveness of providing energy expenditure information during diet and exercise weight intervention versus standard of care (SOC) on weight loss outcomes. Fifty-two participants with obesity were recruited from a specialist weight loss service, randomized 1:1 to intervention (INT) or SOC only. Participants in INT received four-weekly dietetic cou

Trajectories of daily antipsychotic use and weight gain in people hospitalized for the first episode of psychosis.

BACKGROUND: We need to better understand the risk factors and predictors of medication-related weight gain to improve metabolic health of individuals with schizophrenia. This study explores how trajectories of antipsychotic medication (AP) use impact body weight early in the course of schizophrenia. METHODS: We recruited 92 participants with first-episode psychosis (FEP, n = 92) during their first psychiatric hospitalization. We prospectively collected weight, body mass index (BMI), metabolic markers, and exact daily medication exposure during 6-week hospitalization. We quantified the traject

Fetal Head Growth during Early to Mid-Gestation Associated with Weight Gain in Mothers with Hyperemesis Gravidarum: A Retrospective Cohort Study.

The epigenetic impact of malnutrition in mothers with hyperemesis gravidarum (HG) on their offspring has not been fully elucidated. Recently, several reports have demonstrated that children born to mothers with HG were small for gestational age and had low birth weight, reduced insulin sensitivity, and neurodevelopmental delays during childhood. Therefore, we examined the relationship between fetal growth and changes in the maternal body weight in HG cases. A total of 34 patients with HG were hospitalized and delivered at term between 2009 and 2012. The records of 69 cases of pregnant women wi

The effect of hepatic steatosis and fibrosis on liver weight and dimensions.

The liver is the most commonly injured abdominal organ, accounting for around half of abdominal organ injuries. The emergence of liver injury is determined by the injury mechanism, force, and tissue vulnerability. The vulnerability of the liver depends on the strength of the capsule and parenchyma, as well as the weight and dimensions of the liver. The common hepatic diseases, like steatosis, fibrosis, and cirrhosis, can change the organ weight and dimensions, but their exact correlation is not well known. This study was designed to evaluate the correlation between liver diseases, weight, and

The influence of psychological factors on postpartum weight retention 12 months post-birth.

Background During the first postpartum year 20% of women retain excessive weight from pregnancy (postpartum weight retention; PPWR), which predicts long-term overweight/obesity. Objective The aim of this study was to explore the associations between psychological factors (depression, anxiety and stress symptoms and body attitudes) in late gestation and at 12-months postpartum with PPWR one-year post-birth. Methods Pregnant women (N = 176) completed questionnaires in early-mid pregnancy (Time 1; mean (SD) = 16.97 (1.35) weeks), late pregnancy (Time 2; mean (SD) = 33.33 (2.05) weeks), and one ye

A shift to placing parents in charge: Does it improve weight gain in youth with anorexia?

Family-based treatment (FBT) has emerged as a promising approach for medically stable youth with anorexia nervosa (AN). While there is evidence that therapists embrace the core principles of FBT, most face barriers in implementing the model with fidelity. Little research has been conducted to determine whether adhering to the core methods of placing parents in charge are sufficient in restoring weight in youth with AN. This study involved a chart review of youth under 16 years of age, treated by a Canadian tertiary care health centre-based eating disorders team (EDT). The purpose was to compar

Workday Sitting Time and Marital Status: Novel Pretreatment Predictors of Weight Loss in Overweight and Obese Men.

The evidence base for weight loss programs in men is limited. Gaining a greater understanding of which personal characteristics and pretreatment behaviors predict weight loss and attrition in male-only studies would be useful to inform the development of future interventions for men. In December 2010, 159 overweight/obese men (mean age = 47.5 years; body mass index = 32.7 kg/m2) from the Hunter Region of New South Wales, Australia, participated in a randomized controlled trial testing the effectiveness of two versions of a 3-month gender-targeted weight loss program. Effect of hypertension on reproductive organ weights in various strains of rats.

The testes of Wistar Kyoto (WKY) and Spontaneously Hypertensive (SHR) rats have been shown to have differences in regional vascular resistance. In addition, myocardial hypertrophy tends to be more pronounced and occur more frequently in WKY and SHR female rats than in their male counterparts. Therefore, we sought to determine whether hypertension had any effect on reproductive organs and whether this effect was the same among strains. We removed the testes or uterus from Sprague Dawley (SD; n = 30 male and 30 female), WKY (n = 23 male and 16 female), and SHR (n = 27 male and 34 female) rats, w

Evaluation of 2'-Fucosyllactose and Bifidobacterium longum Subspecies infantis on Growth, Organ Weights, and Intestinal Development of Piglets.

Human milk is rich in oligosaccharides that influence intestinal development and serve as prebiotics for the infant gut microbiota. Probiotics and 2'-fucosyllactose (2'-FL) added individually to infant formula have been shown to influence infant development, but less is known about the effects of their synbiotic administration. Herein, the impact of formula supplementation with 2'-fucosyllactose (2'-FL) and Bifidobacterium longum subsp. infantis Bi-26 (Bi-26), or 2'-FL + Bi-26 on weight gain, organ weights, and intestinal development in piglets was investigated. Two-day-old piglets (n = 53) we

Trajectory of Weight Patterns in Urban Youth Throughout Their Stay in a Juvenile Justice System.

Incarceration is associated with health risks including overweight and obesity. This study explored obesity rates and weight gain in incarcerated youth by tracking weight trajectory during continuous stays in juvenile justice facilities. Among 65 youth, mean weight gain was 17.8 pounds and significant, F(2, 12) = 25.44, p = .03. Youth gained an average of 15.6 pounds (standard deviation [ SD] = 3.6) during the initial incarceration period (mean = 71 days). From the assessment to treatment period (mean = 46 days), mean weight gain was 4.1 pounds ( SD = 4.3), which also was significant, F(2, 12)

Weight suppression is a robust predictor of outcome in the cognitive-behavioral treatment of bulimia nervosa.

This study examined weight suppression (difference between highest premorbid weight and pretreatment weight) as a predictor of outcome in 188 outpatients with bulimia nervosa enrolled in a cognitive-behavioral therapy intervention. Participants who dropped out of treatment had significantly higher levels of weight suppression than treatment completers. Of participants who completed treatment, those who continued to engage in binge eating or purging had significantly higher levels of weight suppression than those who were abstinent from bingeing and purging. Results did not change when body mas

Gestational weight gain outside the 2009 Institute of Medicine recommendations: novel psychological and behavioural factors associated with inadequate or excess weight gain in a prospective cohort study.

BACKGROUND: Previous studies have noted traditional physical, demographic, and obstetrical predictors of inadequate or excess gestational weight gain, but the roles of psychological and behavioral factors are not well established. Few interventions targeting traditional factors of gestational weight gain have been successful, necessitating exploration of new domains. The objective of this study was to identify novel psychological and behavioral factors, along with physical, demographic, and obstetrical factors, associated with gestational weight gain that is discordant with the 2009 Institute
