Identification of antibiotic resistance genes in fecal microbiota selected donors during the establishment of a biobank in the south of Brazil.

Fecal microbiota transplantation (FMT) is an effective therapy for recurrent Clostridioides difficile infection (rCDI) and is increasingly explored for other dysbiosis-related disorders. However, its implementation as a regulated therapeutic strategy requires robust donor screening, biosafety frameworks, and standardized processing workflows. Here, we describe the establishment of the first fecal microbiota biobank in southern Brazil and evaluate the incorporation of metagenomic sequencing as a complementary layer of donor characterization and safety assessment. A structured donor selection pi

Developmental and environmental differences in infants with family history of autism and ADHD during the first year of life in Brazil.

Infants with family history (FH) of autism or attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) are likely to experience a range of differences in their early development compared to infants without FH. However, the vast majority of evidence concerning the early development of these infants has come from high-income-country (HIC) contexts and has not considered the role of psychosocial environmental factors. In this study, we investigated developmental and environmental differences in a large cohort (N = 252) of infants aged 6-11 months (mean=8.7 months) with FH of autism (n = 36), ADHD (n = 66)

Can Primary Care Soften the Fiscal Impact of Population Ageing? Evidence From Brazil's Hospital System.

Population ageing is widely expected to place severe pressure on public hospital systems, yet causal evidence from developing countries remains scarce. We estimate the effect of demographic ageing on hospital spending under Brazil's Sistema Único de Saúde (SUS) using a balanced panel of 2798 municipalities over 2008-2021, combining administrative expenditure records with municipality-specific ageing trajectories constructed from the 2010 and 2022 Censuses and, as an independent alternative, from annual Ministry of Health population estimates. Instrumenting current age structure with pre-sample
