Synergistic effects of platelet-rich fibrin and CTLA4Ig gene-transfected porcine skin on accelerating wound healing in a rat model of deep second-degree burns: a mechanistic study.

BACKGROUND: Deep second-degree burns impair skin regeneration and carry high risks of scarring and infection. Achieving healing with minimal immune rejection remains challenging. Platelet-rich fibrin (PRF), an autologous biomaterial, promotes angiogenesis and repair via sustained growth factor release. CTLA4Ig, an immunomodulatory agent, can suppress T-cell-mediated rejection. We hypothesized that combining PRF with CTLA4Ig gene-transfected porcine skin would synergistically enhance wound healing by concurrently stimulating regeneration and modulating local immunity. METHODS: A standardized d

A simple but novel glycymicelle ophthalmic solution based on two approved drugs empagliflozin and glycyrrhizin: in vitro/in vivo experimental evaluation for the treatment of corneal alkali burns.

A simple but novel ophthalmic solution based on two approved drugs was developed to reposition existing drugs to treat new diseases. This nanoformulation was developed using the phytochemical drug glycyrrhizin as an amphiphilic nanocarrier to micellarly solubilize empagliflozin (EMP), an oral drug that is widely used to control high blood glucose but has poor water solubility. This novel nanoformulation, which we designated the EMP@glycymicelle ophthalmic solution, was obtained using a simple preparation process. The resulting solution was a clear solution with an EMP encapsulation efficiency

Expediting venous drainage in large anterolateral thigh flaps for scalp electrical burns in India: two case reports on the use of primary vein grafts for second vein anastomosis.

Large scalp defects resulting from high-voltage electrical burns require free flaps, preferably skin, to permit optimal coverage and enable future or simultaneous cranial vault reconstruction. The anterolateral thigh permits the harvest of a large area of skin supplied by a reliable perforator. The superficial temporal vessels offer the proximate choice of recipient vessels to enable adequate reach and coverage. The lack of a second vein at this site implies the inability to perform a second venous anastomosis; however, this obstacle can be overcome by using an interposition vein graft, to the

School Nurses on the Front Lines of Healthcare: Red Flags and Red Herrings: Improving the Recognition of Bruises and Burns Associated With Physical Abuse in School-Age Children.

Through a series of case scenarios, this article describes the assessment and management of suspected physical child abuse presenting as bruises and burns. Although it is not uncommon for school-age children to have accidental injuries, recognizing patterns associated with physical child abuse and understanding red flags for abuse is vital. Failure to recognize injury patterns suspicious for physical child abuse, and thus failure to intervene appropriately, may leave children at risk for more serious injury or death.

Efficacy of Maitland joint mobilization technique on pain intensity, mouth opening, functional limitation, kinesiophobia, sleep quality and quality of life in temporomandibular joint dysfunction following bilateral cervicofacial burns.

BACKGROUND: Bilateral cervicofacial burn contracture initially affects facial expressions and later affects tempero mandibular joint (TMJ) function of the patient. It further tightens the ligaments and capsules around the TMJ and leads to tempero mandibular dysfunction. The consequences of temporomandibular joint dysfunction will be pain, limitation of mouth opening, functional disability and poor quality of life (Qol). However, studies examining the efficacy of Maitland joint mobilization technique in this population are lacking. OBJECTIVES: To find the short term effects of Maitland joint m

Does the transplantation of keratinocytes really reduce the risk of death? Survival analysis of patients hospitalized at the Dr Stanisław Sakiel Centre for Burns Treatment in 2008-2015.

BACKGROUND: Keratinocyte transplantation is an adjuvant procedure in the extensive burn therapy method. However, it must be taken into consideration that clinical results of keratinocyte transplantation are ambiguous and progress achieved in this method is still being verified, especially due to the high cost of cultured epithelial autograft (CEA) transplants. OBJECTIVES: The aim of this study was to verify the impact of cultured keratinocyte application on patients' survival. This study included a group of patients with the highest chance for a successful outcome of the therapy and excluded

Clinical effectiveness, quality of life and cost-effectiveness of Flaminal® versus Flamazine® in the treatment of partial thickness burns: study protocol for a randomized controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Partial thickness burns are painful, difficult to manage and can have a negative effect on quality of life through scarring, permanent disfigurement and loss of function. The aim of burn treatment in partial thickness burns is to save lives, stimulate wound healing by creating an optimumly moist wound environment, to have debriding and analgesic effects, protect the wound from infection and be convenient for the patient and caregivers. However, there is no consensus on the optimal treatment of partial thickness wounds. Flaminal® and Flamazine® are two standard treatment options tha

Projects in medical education: "Social Justice in Medicine" a rationale for an elective program as part of the medical education curriculum at John A. Burns School of Medicine.

BACKGROUND: Research has shown that cultural competence training improves the attitudes, knowledge, and skills of clinicians related to caring for diverse populations. Social Justice in medicine is the idea that healthcare workers promote fair treatment in healthcare so that disparities are eliminated. Providing students with the opportunity to explore social issues in health is the first step toward decreasing discrimination. This concept is required for institutional accreditation and widely publicized as improving health care delivery in our society. METHODS: A literature review was perfor

Clinical utility of extracorporeal shock wave therapy in restoring hand function of patients with nerve injury and hypertrophic scars due to burns: a prospective, randomized, double-blinded study.

BACKGROUND: Joint contractures and nerve injuries are common after hand burns. Extracorporeal shock wave therapy (ESWT) is effective not only for the regeneration of various tissues, including scar tissues, but also for reducing pain and pruritus in patients with burns. Researchers have attempted to explore the effects of ESWT on hand dysfunction caused by nerve injury following burns. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The authors evaluated the effects of ESWT (compared to sham stimulation) on hands with nerve injury and hypertrophic scars and, thereby, on hand function. The current study was a double-b

Preliminary insights into systemic biomarkers associated with coagulopathy and endotheliopathy in a swine burn model and the impact of fresh frozen plasma resuscitation strategies.

BACKGROUND: Burn injury is a form of trauma whose management may be further complicated in battlefield settings. Burn injury induces inflammation, coagulopathy, and endotheliopathy; however, the timing and progression of these responses have not been well established. Fresh frozen plasma (FFP) has been shown to modulate these responses in other trauma models, but its effects after burn injury remain poorly defined. This study aimed to profile these responses in a swine model of burn injury using a biomarker-based approach. METHODS: Anesthetized female Yorkshire crossbred swine (n = 15) were s

TB-YOLOv8n: an improved YOLOv8n-based model for tip-burn detection in plant factory-grown pakchoi under LED lighting.

INTRODUCTION: Plant factory-grown pakchoi is prone to tip-burn under high-density cultivation, limited airflow, and rapid growth conditions, which reduces leaf integrity and commercial quality. Image-based detection of small or mild visible tip-burn symptoms remains challenging because the affected regions are usually small, irregularly shaped, low in color contrast, and easily disturbed by red-blue LED lighting, leaf overlap, curled leaf margins, and heart-leaf occlusion. METHODS: To address these challenges, this study constructed a pakchoi tip-burn image dataset under plant factory conditi

A fluffy fibrous scaffold with metal-polyphenolic nanocomplexes provides sustained clearance of reactive oxygen species to promote burn wound healing.

Skin burns remain challenging in clinical treatment due to their complex wound morphology, high oxidative stress, hypoxic microenvironment, and severe inflammatory response. Developing strategies for highly effective biomaterials with precise biological functions has become an urgent priority in addressing clinical challenges. This study developed a fluffy fibrous scaffold loaded with a metal-polyphenol nanocomposite (CeLut). The scaffold possesses water-retaining capacity, three-dimensional fluffiness, and interlayer porosity, which promote cell spreading, migration, and proliferation. It is

Microenvironment-adaptive cationic guar gum hydrogel co-loaded with BPNS@MnO2 nanozyme and berberine for infected burn wound healing.

Infected burn wounds are characterized by bacterial invasion, oxidative stress, and persistent inflammation, which severely impair tissue regeneration. Herein, we report a crosslinker-free, hydrogen-bonded cationic guar gum hydrogel (CBBM) co-loaded with berberine (BBR) and MnO2-coated black phosphorus nanosheets (BPNS@MnO2) for the microenvironment-adaptive treatment of infected burn wounds. The dynamic guar gum network endowed the hydrogel with injectability, self-healing ability, and conformal adaptability. BPNS@MnO2 exhibited pH-dependent enzyme-like activities, including OXD-like antibact
