OBJECTIVE: To determine if the shape of the oropharyngeal airway is related to the vertical morphology of the skeletofacial complex, including the hyoid bone.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Cone beam computed tomography scans from 50 pretreatment adult orthodontic records were used to obtain skeletal and airway measurements. Linear regression statistics were used to compare soft tissue variables to hard tissue predictor variables.
RESULTS: Transverse airway widening was significantly increased when the distance between the hyoid and vertebrae was reduced; when the three-dimensional (3D) facial axis

The postoperative skeletal stability following surgical advancement of the mandible can be influenced by several factors. The effect of the medial pterygoid muscle and the stylomandibular ligament on the stability of results following surgical advancement has possibly been underestimated. In this retrospective study, the long-term postoperative skeletal stability following surgical advancement of the mandible in two groups of patients was studied and compared. In one group the medial pterygoid muscle and the stylomandibular ligament were stripped from the medial side of the angle of the mandib

PURPOSE: Children with unoperated cleft lip/palate have nearly normal facial growth, whereas patients who have had labiopalatal repair often exhibit midfacial retrusion. The aim of this study was to compare cephalometric data in patients with repaired unilateral or bilateral complete cleft lip/alveolus (UCCLA or BCCLA) with patients with repaired unilateral or bilateral complete cleft lip/palate (UCCLP or BCCLP). This study might provide insight into the etiology of impaired facial growth in patients with repaired cleft lip/palate.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: This was a retrospective, cross-sectio

BACKGROUND: Few investigations have used placenta as an alternative matrix to detect in utero drug exposure, despite its availability at the time of birth and the large amount of sample. Methadone-maintained opioid-dependent pregnant women provide a unique opportunity to examine the placental disposition of methadone and metabolite [2-ethylidene-1,5-dimethyl-3,3-diphenylpyrrolidine (EDDP)], to explore their correlations with maternal methadone dose and neonatal outcomes, and to test the ability to detect in utero exposure to illicit drugs.
METHODS: We calculated the correlations of placental

Morphometric methods are used in biology to study object symmetry in living organisms and to determine the true plane of symmetry. The aim of this study was to determine if there are clinical differences between three-dimensional (3D) cephalometric midsagittal planes used to describe craniofacial asymmetry and a true symmetry plane derived from a morphometric method based on visible facial features. The sample consisted of 14 dry skulls (9 symmetric and 5 asymmetric) with metallic markers which were imaged with cone-beam computed tomography. An error study and statistical analysis were perform

INTRODUCTION: Not all adult Class III malocclusion patients are candidates for surgical correction. In patient assessment and selection, major issues remain regarding diagnosis and treatment planning. The purpose of this investigation was to ascertain whether adding a transverse parameter to a discriminant analysis could improve the classification of adults with Class III malocclusion into 2 groups of patients: those who can effectively be treated by orthodontic therapy and those who require orthognathic surgery.
METHODS: Cephalograms, plaster casts, and extraoral photos of 69 adults with Cla

AIM: This study investigated the development of a three-dimensional (3D) coordinate system for radiologic volumetric data, allowing the analysis of the tooth axis of displaced teeth in relation to the occlusal, frontal, and sagittal reference planes.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: The data basis consisted of multislice computed tomography (MSCT) data of 37 patients with displaced upper canines. A total of 20 patients displayed unilateral displacement and 17 patients bilateral displacement (n = 54). The non-displaced canines of the opposite side served as the reference group (n = 20), together with MSC

Recent experimental research demonstrated that non-reducing temporomandibular joint (TMJ) disc displacement in growing rabbits impaired mandibular growth. TMJ disc displacement is also shown to induce histological changes of the condylar cartilage. The authors hypothesized that the severity of these changes would correlate to the magnitude of mandibular growth. Bilateral non-reducing TMJ disc displacement was surgically created in 10 growing New Zealand White rabbits. Ten additional rabbits constituted a sham operated control group. Aided by tantalum implants, growth was cephalometrically dete

PTEN Hamartoma Tumor Syndrome (PHTS) is often recognized by the presence of macrocephaly and associated mucocutaneous features, and is notable for a profound predisposition to breast and thyroid cancers. Head circumference (HC) is rarely measured when evaluating women at high risk for breast cancer, but may offer insight into characterizing cancer risk. Patients enrolled in the University of Michigan Cancer Genetics registry for breast cancer evaluation were analyzed for personal and family history of cancer and features of PHTS. This group of women was compared to all women who had undergone

Using the Treil 14 points cephalometric model orthodontists can prepare a complete cranio-facial anatomic assessment at three analytic levels: the framework or envelope, the basal bone and the alveolo-dental arcade. The assessment of border-line surgical antero-posterior dysmorphosis can elucidate interesting depictions of asymmetries, their relation to other malformities, and their genesis. Asymmetry arises from over-growth of one side of the face in all three dimensions of space even if, clinically, it often appears that one dimension is predominately affected. Adult patients with a Class II skeletal base are often treated by a combined orthodontic and surgical approach. Advancement of the mandible, most often including a bilateral sagittal split osteotomy (BSSO), is preceded by orthodontic alignment and frequently the curve of Spee is levelled. When the chin is prominent, there is a risk of accentuating this as a result of surgery. An option to prevent this is to maintain a deep curve of Spee before surgical advancement. This will result in an opening rotation of the mandible during surgery and thus, a less prominent chin. The aim of this study was

This study aimed to gather statistically validated information on the changes in orthodontic variables in patients with bilateral upper lateral incisor aplasia treated with isolated orthodontic space closure. Data were collected from 25 (15 females, 10 males) consecutively treated, unselected adolescents [mean age at the end of treatment 16.4 years, standard deviation (SD) 1.3] after orthodontic space closure using push-and-pull mechanics (PPM). The changes in the relevant parameters were determined by comparing baseline and final lateral headfilms and casts. Following verification of normal d

BACKGROUND: Surgical correction of cranial abnormalities, including craniosynostosis, requires knowledge of normal skull shape to appreciate dysmorphic variations. However, the inability of current anthropometric techniques to adequately characterize three-dimensional cranial shape severely limits morphologic study. The authors previously introduced three-dimensional vector analysis, a quantitative method that maps cranial form from computed tomography data. In this article, the authors report its role in the development and validation of a normative database of pediatric cranial morphology an

In this article, we report the successful treatment of a patient, aged 19 years 11 months, who had a severe Class II malocclusion and facial asymmetry. A combination of intraoral vertical-sagittal ramus osteotomy (IVSRO), intraoral vertical ramus osteotomy (IVRO), and LeFort I osteotomy was used for mandibular advancement and maxillary impaction. The patient had a convex profile because of a retrognathic mandible. She also had severe mandibular deviation and vertical maxillary excess with a canted occlusal plane. A deep overbite of 8.0 mm and an excessive overjet of 10.0 mm were observed. Afte

INTRODUCTION: Traditional cephalometric radiographs can analyze facial soft-tissues 2 dimensionally. Because they cannot provide information about the nose, lips, cheeks, and mouth, another method is needed to analyze these soft tissues. We introduce a new method for analyzing the 3-dimensional (3D) shape and size of facial soft-tissue morphology.
METHODS: A 3D average face model was constructed based on 3D computed tomography images of Japanese male and female adult volunteers who had well-balanced faces and normal occlusions. To test the feasibility of evaluating the quantitative effects of
