Computational modeling of resting-state activity demonstrates markers of normalcy in children with prenatal or perinatal stroke.

Children who sustain a prenatal or perinatal brain injury in the form of a stroke develop remarkably normal cognitive functions in certain areas, with a particular strength in language skills. A dominant explanation for this is that brain regions from the contralesional hemisphere "take over" their functions, whereas the damaged areas and other ipsilesional regions play much less of a role. However, it is difficult to tease apart whether changes in neural activity after early brain injury are due to damage caused by the lesion or by processes related to postinjury reorganization. We sought to

Spanish translation and linguistic validation of the quality of life in neurological disorders (Neuro-QoL) measurement system.

INTRODUCTION: The quality of life in neurological disorders (Neuro-QoL) measurement system is a 470-item compilation of health-related quality of life domains for adults and children with neurological disorders. It was developed and cognitively debriefed in English and Spanish, with general population and clinical samples in the USA. This paper describes the Spanish translation and linguistic validation process. METHODS: The translation methodology combined forward and back-translations, multiple reviews, and cognitive debriefing with 30 adult and 30 pediatric Spanish-speaking respondents in

Hearing rehabilitation with single-stage bilateral vibroplasty in a child with Franceschetti syndrome.

Hearing is of utmost importance for normal speech and social development. Even children who have mild or unilateral permanent hearing loss may experience difficulties with understanding speech, as well as problems with educational and psycho-social development. The increasing advantages of middle-ear implant technologies are opening new perspectives for restoring hearing. Active middle-ear implants can be used in children and adolescents with hearing loss. In addition to the well-documented results for improving speech intelligibility and quality of hearing in sensorineural hearing loss active

Impaired non-speech auditory processing at a pre-reading age is a risk-factor for dyslexia but not a predictor: an ERP study.

Impaired auditory sensitivity to amplitude rise time (ART) has been suggested to be a primary deficit in developmental dyslexia. The present study investigates whether impaired ART-sensitivity at a pre-reading age precedes and predicts later emerging reading problems in a sample of Dutch children. An oddball paradigm, with a deviant that differed from the standard stimulus in ART, was administered to 41-month-old children (30 genetically at-risk for developmental dyslexia and 14 controls) with concurrent EEG measurement. A second deviant that differed from the standard stimulus in frequency se

Blepharophimosis-ptosis-epicanthus inversus syndrome plus: deletion 3q22.3q23 in a patient with characteristic facial features and with genital anomalies, spastic diplegia, and speech delay.

Blepharophimosis-ptosis-epicanthus inversus syndrome(BPES; OMIM110100) is a genetic disorder usually inherited in an autosomal dominant manner. Primarily, its diagnosis is based on four major features present at birth: short horizontal palpebral fissures (blepharophimosis), drooping of the eyelids (ptosis), a vertical fold of skin from the lower eyelid up either side of the nose (epicanthus inversus), and lateral displacement of the inner canthi with normal interpupillary distance(telecanthus; Oley and Baraitser, 1988). Two types of BPES are recognized: type I BPES includes the four major eyel

Intrachromosomal partial triplication of chromosome 13 secondary to a paternal duplication with mild phenotypic effect.

Intrachromosomal triplications are rare and can be mistaken for duplications. The majority of triplications reported are de novo, mostly involving chromosome 15q, and have a middle inverted repeat. We report on the clinical, cytogenetic, and molecular analyses of a patient with a novel triplication 13q21.1-q21.33 secondary to a familial duplication 13q21.1-q21.33 with mild phenotypic effect in three generations. The propositus was an 8-year-old boy referred because of language delay and mild mental retardation. His weight, height and OFC were above the 97th centile. He had delayed tooth erupti

Language-minority learners in special education: rates and predictors of identification for services.

Using data from the Early Childhood Longitudinal Study-Kindergarten Cohort, this study was designed to investigate proportional representation, identification rates, and predictors of language-minority (LM) learners in special education using a nationally representative sample of kindergarten, first graders, and third graders. The findings indicate that although LM learners were underrepresented in special education in kindergarten and first grade, they were overrepresented in third grade across all disability categories. LM status, teacher ratings of language and literacy skills, and reading

Use of context in pragmatic language comprehension by children with Asperger syndrome or high-functioning autism.

Utilizing relevance theory, this study investigated the ability of children with Asperger syndrome (AS) and high-functioning autism (HFA) to use context when answering questions and when giving explanations for their correct answers. Three groups participated in this study: younger AS/HFA group (age 7-9, n=16), older AS/HFA group (age 10-12, n=23) and a normally functioning control group (age 7-9, n=23). The results indicated that the younger AS/HFA group did less well when answering contextually demanding questions compared to the control group, and the performance of the older AS/HFA group f

Neuropsychological functioning in preschool-age children with sickle cell disease: the role of illness-related and psychosocial factors.

Cognitive and academic deficits have been identified in school-aged children with sickle cell disease (SCD). However, there have been very few identified studies that examine neuropsychological functioning in preschool-age children with SCD. It is important to understand effects of SCD from a developmental perspective and to consider the contribution of environmental factors in this at-risk population. Neuropsychological functioning of preschool-age children with SCD and no history of overt stroke (n = 26) was examined across several domains (language, immediate memory/brief attention, visuosp

Aetiology of hearing loss and other related factors versus language outcome after cochlear implantation in children.

OBJECTIVE: Cochlear implantation outcome in prelingually deafened children is highly variable. The objective of this study was to examine the relationship between the yearly improvements in speech and language scores after cochlear implantation in children, with the aetiology of the hearing loss and other related factors. METHODS: We reviewed the case notes of children with early onset (0-2 years) of hearing loss, who were implanted in their first decade of life between 1992 and 2000 in Great Ormond Street Children Hospital. We assessed the relationship between the improvement of the receptiv

[Results of national evaluation tests (primary schools) of CE2 and 6th classes of 73 students with congenital hypothyroidism screened at birth].

UNLABELLED: Assessment of school performance provides an excellent index of adequacy of therapy of congenital hypothyroidism. PATIENTS AND METHODS: Scholarly achievement of 73 children with congenital hypothyroidism screened and followed-up in our clinic was evaluated by comparison to national tests calculated from a wide random sample. The 73 children were divided into three groups: 31 patients belonging to the CE2 class (third primary school class) (group 1); 13 patients belonging to the 6th class (first secondary school class) having already passed CE2 tests (group 2); and 16 patients also

Mid- and long-term outcome of 89 premature infants weighing less than 1,000 g at birth, all appropriate for gestational age.

OBJECTIVE: Advances in obstetrical and neonatal care have achieved dramatic reductions in the mortality of extremely low birth weight infants, but concerns regarding the long-term neurodevelopmental prognosis have increased. The study was performed to assess the physical and developmental status of premature infants weighing < 1,000 g at birth who were appropriate for gestational age (AGA). METHODS: A follow-up study including school level, physical and developmental examination and/or interviews of parents, pediatricians, teachers and social workers was carried out from January 1, 1981 to De

Communication among preschoolers with and without disabilities in same-age and mixed-age classes.

Communicative interactions of preschool children with and without disabilities in classrooms of same or mixed ages were compared. Sixteen children with developmental disabilities (most with mild or moderate mental retardation) and 32 children without disabilities between 1.5 and 4.5 years of age were randomly assigned at the beginning of the school year to either a same- or mixed-age grouping of 6 children. They were observed 6 months later interacting with classmates in a standard free-play environment. Results showed that children in mixed-age classes took more turns in conversations with pa

Neurophysiological heterogeneity and the definition of dyslexia: preliminary evidence for plasticity.

Developments in the field of quantified electroencephalography have enhanced visualization of brain function in the learning disabilities. Optimal utilization of these techniques requires that populations under study be unambiguously defined. Evidence from the literature demonstrates that brain electrical activity of children with reading disability is more extensive and differs from that seen in children with "dyslexia-pure". Preliminary data are presented demonstrating that electrophysiological change seen in children with dyslexia-plus (dyslexia and attentional deficit disorder) could not b

Diagnosis and treatment of otitis media with effusion: CODEPEH recommendations.

The incidence and the prevalence rates of otitis media with effusion (OME) are high. However, there is evidence that only a minority of professionals follow the recommendations provided in clinical practice guidelines. For the purpose of improving diagnosis and treatment of OME in children to prevent and/or reduce its impact on children's development, the Commission for the Early Detection of Deafness (CODEPEH) has deeply reviewed the scientific literature on this field and has drafted a document of recommendations for a correct clinical reaction to of OME, including diagnosis and medical and
