Accuracy of three-dimensional imaging in assessing maxillary molar furcation involvement.

AIM: To assess the accuracy of cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) in detecting furcation involvement (FI) in maxillary molars. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Fourteen patients with generalized advanced chronic periodontitis were consecutively recruited and treated non-surgically. In maxillary molars considered for furcation surgery due to increased FI and/or increased probing pocket depths during re-evaluation, CBCT was performed and the degree of FI was evaluated from the CBCT images. Furcation surgery was performed in 25 maxillary molars. Intra-surgical FI assessments were compared with data deriv

Treatment of intrabony periodontal defects with enamel matrix derivative in private practice: a long-term retrospective study.

The present study describes treatment of intrabony periodontal defects with enamel matrix derivative (EMD) in private practice. Ten patients with clinical diagnosis of chronic periodontitis were subjected to data analysis. A total of 18 teeth with various osseous defects received regenerative therapy with EMD, and were followed for a minimum of 2 years. Treatment of the intrabony defects with EMD led to a statistically significant improvement in the mean value of probing depth at 1-year when compared with at the baseline (p<0.01). Reduction in probing depth was achieved with minimal recession

Combined therapy of mineral trioxide aggregate and guided tissue regeneration in the treatment of external root resorption and an associated osseous defect.

BACKGROUND: The treatment of external root resorption and associated periodontal defects can be challenging to the most astute clinician. In this case report, a multidisciplinary approach was performed to treat a maxillary central incisor that presented with a sinus tract. An amalgam restoration had been placed approximately 10 years earlier to repair an area of external root resorption. METHODS: A full-thickness mucoperiosteal flap was reflected from teeth #8 to #9. Following degranulation of the area, an amalgam restoration was found on the distal root surface of tooth #8. A 2-wall osseous

Biphasic calcium phosphate ceramic combined with fibrillar collagen with and without citric acid conditioning in the treatment of periodontal osseous defects.

The purpose of this study is to determine whether the combination of biphasic calcium phosphate ceramic (BCP) and collagen and citric acid root conditioning would promote accelerated new attachment of periodontal tissue to the root surface in dogs. Intrabony defects were surgically produced for each animal and were made chronic for 16 weeks. These defects were assigned to two study treatment and one control group: ceramic-collagen without citric acid (CO-CE); ceramic-collagen with citric acid (CO-CE-CA); and control (surgical debridement and root planing only). Results showed that all groups g

Bacterial variability within diseases periodontal sites.

The purpose of this study was to examine the variability in bacterial proportions between individual periodontal sites in patients with chronic periodontitis by means of differential dark-field microscopy. Fourteen patients with untreated, moderate to advanced disease were included. Probing depth, plaque and gingival index scores were recorded for each patient. Microbial samples were collected from the tooth surface with the greatest proving depth in each sextant and examined individually by dark-field microscopy. The results indicated that proportions of spirochetes and motile rods at any giv

PDLSCs Regulate Angiogenesis of Periodontal Ligaments via VEGF Transferred by Exosomes in Periodontitis.

Abnormal angiogenesis is one of the significant features in periodontitis leading to progressive inflammation, but angiogenic changes of periodontal ligaments under inflammatory condition were rarely reported. Periodontal ligament stem cells (PDLSCs) were a kind of dental stem cells associated with vascularization. Here we investigated the alteration of angiogenesis of periodontal ligament in periodontitis, and revealed an exosome-mediated pathway to support the effect of PDLSCs on angiogenic improvement. Vascular specific marker CD31 and VEGFA were found to be highly expressed in periodontal

MMP-8, TRAP-5, and OPG Levels in GCF Diagnostic Potential to Discriminate between Healthy Patients', Mild and Severe Periodontitis Sites.

Biomarkers represent promising aids in periodontitis, host-mediate diseases of the tooth-supporting tissues. We assessed the diagnostic potential of matrix metalloproteinase-8 (MMP-8), tartrate-resistant acid phosphatase-5 (TRAP-5), and osteoprotegerin (OPG) to discriminate between healthy patients', mild and severe periodontitis sites. Thirty-one otherwise healthy volunteers with and without periodontal disease were enrolled at the Faculty of Dentistry, University of Chile. Periodontal parameters were examined and gingival crevicular fluid was sampled from mild periodontitis sites (M; n = 42)

Tissue-engineered cultured periosteum sheet application to treat infrabony defects: case series and 5-year results.

One-year data after autologous grafting of infrabony periodontal defects with human cultured periosteum sheets in combination with platelet-rich plasma and hydroxyapatite granules have shown favorable clinical and radiographic results. A 5-year follow-up evaluation of 22 selected patients indicated that treated infrabony defects remained stable. Radiographically, there was an increase in osseous radiopacity and bone trabeculation suggesting further bone maturation. This novel tissue-engineered periodontal treatment approach has resulted in significant clinical improvement, and defects remained

Effects of pretreatment clinical parameters on bioactive glass implantation in intrabony periodontal defects.

BACKGROUND: The various methods for regeneration of periodontal tissue that have been developed can be classified into guided tissue regeneration and bone implantation. Since the implantation materials have shown both deficiencies and merits, dentists have begun exploring the bioactive glass first used in plastic surgery. This paper examines the effectiveness of this new material on periodontal intrabony defects. METHODS: Clinical effects of bioactive glass implantation in intrabony periodontal defects were evaluated 6 months after surgery in 38 intrabony defects from 38 patients with chronic

Aggressive periodontitis: A clinico-hematological appraisal.

BACKGROUND: Human leukocyte antigens (HLA) have been considered a candidate of genetic risk markers for aggressive periodontitis (AP). AP has also been associated with polymorphonuclear leukocyte (PMN) dysfunction. The role of monocyte subsets in AP has also not been completely explored. Therefore, the present study was undertaken to assess in, AP subjects, the possible association between defective PMN adhesion and β2-integrin expression; defective neutrophil migration and actin polymerization level; the expression of ABO blood group and HLA antigen; and the percentage of CD14+ CD16+ monocyte

Oral inflammatory process and general health. Part 1: The focal infection and the oral inflammatory lesion.

A focal infection is a localized or generalized infection caused by the dissemination of microorganisms or toxic products from a focus of infection in various organic districts, including the oral district. In the Part 1 of this two-part review article, after historical signs, the Authors describe the current pathogenic concepts like the "immuno-allergic theory" and the formation of auto-antibodies in human body, contributing to the genesis of autoimmune illnesses sustained by individual reactivity linked to eredo-constitutionality. Some theories suppose a focal origin even for general patholo
