Impacts of elevated temperature and CO2 concentration on carbon metabolism in an endangered carnation: Consequences for biomass allocation and flowering.

One of the greatest threats to plant function and fitness is global warming, characterised by a combination of increased atmospheric CO2 concentrations and temperatures. However, their effects on plant physiology, growth, and reproduction remain unclear, particularly for rare species that support vulnerable ecosystem functions. Here, we investigated these effects on leaf and whole-plant functional traits of the rare endangered C3 species Dianthus inoxianus. Mature plants were grown for 18 weeks in controlled-environment chambers under four environmental scenarios that combined day/night air te

Seasonal stabilization effects slowed the greening of the Northern Hemisphere over the last two decades.

Rising atmospheric CO₂ and warming spring temperatures increase vegetation growth and the terrestrial carbon sink. However, drought, heat stress, phenology, and resource limitations may stabilize or limit theses projected increases. We investigate the balance between these amplifying and stabilizing ecological factors by asking whether enhanced early-season growth leads to continued late-season growth. Using the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) leaf area index (LAI) dataset, we identify three seasonal growth patterns based on early- and peak-season positive LAI anomalies:

A test of ecophysiological theories on tropical forest functional traits along a VPD gradient.

Forest primary production is a crucial process for both ecosystem functioning and global carbon cycling. Primary production responds to both temperature and vapour pressure deficit (VPD) through separate mechanisms. Vegetation models need to quantify both responses. However, due to their often high correlations, most observational data sets used to test models or theories hardly distinguish them. Here we evaluate ecophysiological theories on the effect of VPD using tree trait data collected along a VPD gradient in West Africa. Study sites spanned an annual rainfall range of 1200-2050 mm, with

From emissions to solutions: The role of green energy, environmental policy stringency, and political stability in achieving BRICS' carbon neutrality goals.

Rapid economic growth in BRICS countries has significantly increased carbon dioxide emissions, creating serious challenges for global environmental sustainability and climate goals. While previous research has often examined emission drivers in advanced economies or considered isolated factors, a critical gap remains in understanding the combined influence of multiple key determinants in the diverse BRICS context. This study addresses this gap by analyzing the joint effects of energy efficiency, green energy, environmental policy stringency, political stability, trade openness, and economic gr

The impact of high temperatures on spontaneous abortion: A systematic review and meta-analysis.

Spontaneous abortion occurs in approximately one in five pregnancies and may be influenced by environmental factors, particularly heat exposure. This study reviewed and synthesized research on the relationship between high temperatures and spontaneous abortion. A systematic literature search identified eight studies from various regions. Data were extracted and analyzed using standardized methods, with quality assessed through Joanna Briggs Institute tools. Meta-analysis showed a pooled spontaneous abortion rate of 13.1%, with higher temperatures consistently linked to increased pregnancy loss

Environmental change increases the transmission risk of visceral leishmaniasis in central China around the Taihang mountains.

BACKGROUND: Visceral leishmaniasis is a neglected life-threatening sandfly-borne disease, which brings a growing public health threat in Central China around the Taihang Mountains. However, the spatiotemporal dynamics of visceral leishmaniasis in the local community and the potential driving factors remain poorly understood. METHODS: We analyzed the spatiotemporal patterns of new reported visceral leishmaniasis cases in the region from 2006 to 2023, and combined random forest modeling approach with environmental covariates to identify the main influencing factors related to transmission risk

An assessment of CO2 and CH4 emissions in a tropical river: from the Kenyir Reservoir to the estuary.

INTRODUCTION: HIV-associated Kaposi sarcoma (HIV-KS) is the most common cancer in Malawi. In 2008, the non-governmental organization, Partners In Health, and the Ministry of Health established the Neno Kaposi Sarcoma Clinic (NKSC) to treat HIV-KS in rural Neno district. We aimed to evaluate 12-month clinical outcomes and retention in care for HIV-KS patients in the NKSC, and to describe our implementation model, which featured protocol-guided chemotherapy, integrated antiretroviral therapy (ART) and psychosocial support delivered by community health workers. METHODS: We conducted a retrospect

Does energy transition reduce carbon inequality? A global analysis.

Energy transition from fossil fuels to renewables is instrumental in mitigating climate change. Low-income countries have a higher share of renewable energy in their total energy consumption than rich countries (WDI, 2023). Thus, it is imperative to examine the role of energy transition in affecting relative CO2 emissions between rich and poor sections of the societies across income groups of the countries. In this context, our study contributes by constructing the carbon inequality models with renewable and non-renewable energy consumption as prime explanatory variables separately for 114 cou

Environmental stressors and zoonoses in the Arctic: Learning from the past to prepare for the future.

The risk of zoonotic disease transmission from animals to humans is elevated for people in close contact with domestic and wild animals. About three-quarters of all known human infectious diseases are zoonotic, and potential health impacts of these diseases are higher where infectious disease surveillance and access to health care and public health services are limited. This is especially the case for remote circumarctic regions, where drivers for endemic, emerging, and re-emerging zoonotic diseases include anthropogenic influences, such as pollution by long-range transport of industrial chemi

Temperature influence on the sensitivity of Artemia franciscana to globally used pesticides - Oxyfluorfen and copper.

Climate change further the world's human population increase is a mainstream political issue, and it's critical to search for solutions to produce enough food to feed everyone. Pesticides and fertilizers have been used as an easy solution to prevent pests and increase food production. Nevertheless, their overuse has dangerous effects on the ecosystems and communities. Oxyfluorfen (Oxy) and copper (Cu) based formulations are used as pesticides and widely applied on agricultural fields for crop protection. However, they have shown negative effects on non-target species. So, this work proposes to

Warming, stochastic diel thermal fluctuations affect physiological performance and gill plasticity in an amphibious mangrove fish.

Natural temperature variation in many marine ecosystems is stochastic and unpredictable, and climate change models indicate that this thermal irregularity is likely to increase. Temperature acclimation may be more challenging when conditions are highly variable and stochastic, and there is a need for empirical physiological data in these thermal environments. Using the hermaphroditic, amphibious mangrove rivulus (Kryptolebias marmoratus), we hypothesized that compared with regular, warming diel thermal fluctuations, stochastic warm fluctuations would negatively affect physiological performance

Reducing Soil-Emitted Nitrous Acid as a Feasible Strategy for Tackling Ozone Pollution.

Severe ozone (O3) pollution has been a major air quality issue and affects environmental sustainability in China. Conventional mitigation strategies focusing on reducing volatile organic compounds and nitrogen oxides (NOx) remain complex and challenging. Here, through field flux measurements and laboratory simulations, we observe substantial nitrous acid (HONO) emissions (FHONO) enhanced by nitrogen fertilizer application at an agricultural site. The observed FHONO significantly improves model performance in predicting atmospheric HONO and leads to regional O3 increases by 37%. We also demonst

Host drivers of canine dirofilariosis in an arid environment of western Argentina.

Canine dirofilariosis is a mosquito-borne zoonotic disease largely caused by Dirofilaria immitis. Mainly present in temperate, semitropical, and tropical areas, its worldwide emergence and spread are causing concern. In Argentina, most cases have been reported in humid regions of the center and northeast of the country. The occurrence of canine dirofilariosis in an arid environment of western Argentina was investigated by blood smears, microhematocrit tube test, and Knott's technique. Association and odds ratio were determined in relation to dog characteristics. Thirty-three dogs (51.6%) had m

Studying the evolutions, differences, and water security impacts of water demands under shared socioeconomic pathways: A SEMs-bootstrap-ANN approach applied to Sichuan Province.

In this study, a SEMs-bootstrap-ANN method was presented for constructing prediction intervals (PIs) of water demand under shared socioeconomic pathways (SSPs). The primary objective was to examine the evolution, disparities, and impacts on water security. Initially, a bootstrap algorithm and an artificial neural network (ANN) were combined to form a bootstrap-ANN model, which determined the centres and widths of the PIs at a specified significance level by estimating the distributions of prediction values and errors. The water demand factors in SSPs were projected using socioeconomic models l

Ecological and environmental factors affecting the risk of tick-borne encephalitis in Europe, 2017 to 2021.

BackgroundTick-borne encephalitis (TBE) is a disease which can lead to severe neurological symptoms, caused by the TBE virus (TBEV). The natural transmission cycle occurs in foci and involves ticks as vectors and several key hosts that act as reservoirs and amplifiers of the infection spread. Recently, the incidence of TBE in Europe has been rising in both endemic and new regions.AimIn this study we want to provide comprehensive understanding of the main ecological and environmental factors that affect TBE spread across Europe.MethodsWe searched available literature on covariates linked with t

Sudden Mortality in Captive White-Tailed Deer With Atypical Infestation of Winter Tick.

In October 2020, three captive male white-tailed deer, Odocoileus virginianus [Zimmermann] (artiodactyla: Cervidae), were found dead in central Pennsylvania and a fourth was euthanized due to extreme lethargy. The deer presented with high burdens of Dermacentor albipictus (Packard) (Ixoda: Ixodidae) (winter tick). There were no other clinical symptoms and deer were in otherwise good physical condition with no observed alopecia. Winter tick epizootics have been associated with mortalities of moose, Alces alces [Linnaeus] (artiodactyla: cervidae), and more recently elk, Cervus canadensis [Erxleb
