Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) is a highly prevalent mental health disorder. Due to the high level of variability in susceptibility and severity, PTSD therapies are still insufficient. In addition to environmental exposures, genetic risks play a prominent role and one such factor is apolipoprotein E. The protein (apoE) is functionally involved in cholesterol transport and metabolism and exists as 3 major isoforms in humans: E2, E3, and E4. To model the role of apolipoprotein E isoform in stress-related changes in behavior and cognition, female and male mice (3-5 months of age) expressin

Parkinson's disease (PD) motor symptoms are caused by the progressive degeneration of ventral mesencephalic (VM) dopaminergic neurons (DAn) in the Substantia Nigra pars compacta (SNpc). Cell replacement therapy for PD is based on the concept that the implantation of DAn in the striatum can functionally restore the dopamine levels lost in the disease. In the current study we have used an immortalized human VM neural stem cell line (hVM1) that generates DAn with the A9 phenotype. We have previously found that the forced expression of Bcl-X(L) in these cells enhances DAn generation and improves,

Acute stress disorder is a psychiatric diagnosis that may occur in patients within four weeks of a traumatic event. Features include anxiety, intense fear or helplessness, dissociative symptoms, reexperiencing the event, and avoidance behaviors. Persons with this disorder are at increased risk of developing posttraumatic stress disorder. Other risk factors for posttraumatic stress disorder include current or family history of anxiety or mood disorders, a history of sexual or physical abuse, lower cognitive ability, engaging in excessive safety behaviors, and greater symptom severity one to two

BACKGROUND: Chronic hepatitis B (CHB) is a global health challenge with low rates of diagnosis and treatment worldwide. Since social factors and individual cognition significantly influence antiviral therapy adherence in CHB patients, both of which are shaped by patients' understanding of hepatitis B, this study aimed to investigate the effects of social influences on antiviral therapy behavior among CHB patients with different levels of disease knowledge.
METHODS: From March to October 2023, a survey was conducted among CHB patients in Fuqing City, Fujian Province. A self-designed scale was

BACKGROUND: Behavioral addictions (BAs) are increasingly recognized as significant mental health challenges, but evidence on treatment efficacy remains limited. Psychological interventions, particularly cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) and its internet-based formats, are considered first-line treatments. However, it remains unclear whether these interventions are equally effective across genders. Addressing this gap is essential for developing gender-sensitive treatment strategies and improving clinical outcomes in individuals with BAs.
METHODS: This systematic review and individual patient

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: Topiramate has been studied in the treatment of substance use disorders and is often used off-label in the treatment of other disorders with impaired impulse control. We sought to determine whether impulsiveness could predict topiramate treatment response in individuals with cocaine use disorder (CUD).
METHODS: In a post-hoc analysis of a 12-week, double-blind, randomized, placebo-controlled trial of topiramate for CUD, we examined the relationship between response to treatment and participants' baseline score on the Barrett Impulsiveness Scale (BIS-11). During the orig

BACKGROUND: Sub-Saharan African adolescents living with HIV face challenges to antiretroviral therapy (ART) adherence. Poor mental health drives nonadherence but can be improved with cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT). CBT delivered by peers may strengthen effects while building capacity for sustainment in low-income countries. This case study retrospectively applied the Exploration Preparation Implementation Sustainment framework to characterize the execution of the Kigali Imbereheza Project, a 2-arm individually randomized group controlled trial of Trauma-Informed Adherence-Enhanced CBT (TI-

Because problematic patterns of alcohol and other substance use are prevalent drivers of the HIV/AIDS epidemic, comprehensive interventions are needed for substance-using men who have sex with men (SUMSM). We conducted a systematic review of 12 randomized controlled trials (RCTs) of behavioral interventions for reducing condomless anal intercourse (CAI) in SUMSM. Three RCTs observed that cognitive behavioral or motivational interviewing interventions achieved a 24% to 40% decrease in CAI. Interventions also tended to demonstrate greater efficacy for reducing CAI and substance use among those w

Cognitive behavioural therapies (CBT), which have been proven to be effective, are tools which are simple to use and implement. In Sainte Anne hospital, consultations with a nurse specialised in CBT were first set up in 2011.The nurse specialised in CBT sees the patients on a one-to-one basis and often plays, within the multidisciplinary team, the role of care coordinator.

PURPOSE: Sexual dysfunction and low sexual satisfaction are common among individuals with multiple sclerosis (MS); however, little is known about factors that influence sexual satisfaction within this population. As such, the purpose of this study was to investigate the extent to which changes in negative and positive partner support predict sexual satisfaction levels over time in individuals with MS.
DESIGN: Eighty-one individuals with MS completed measures of sexual dysfunction, sexual satisfaction, partner social support, and depression. Data from baseline and posttreatment follow-up were

This work examines differences in the detection and distraction by social-threat-related information between a social phobia group (SP; N=33) and a normal control group (NC; N=32). The change obtained after psychological treatment is also studied for the SP group. A paper-and-pencil visual search task is used, in which the emotional valence of the "target" (social threat, physical threat, and neutral words) and "distractor" (social threat, physical threat, neutral, and nonsense words) verbal stimuli is manipulated. Results indicate that there are no differences in the detection of social-threa

Given that a substantial proportion of current pathological gamblers are female, it is evident that women are underrepresented in the treatment outcome literature. The current study was designed to redress the limited information on the treatment of female pathological gambling. Although the use of cognitive-behavioural therapy is the most highly recommended approach as 'best practice' for the treatment of pathological gambling, no attempt to date has been made to evaluate the efficacy of this approach for female pathological gambling. Nineteen female pathological gamblers with electronic gami

Binge eating disorder (BED) is a new eating disorder that describes the eating disturbance of a large number of individuals who suffer from recurrent binge eating but who do not regularly engage in the compensatory behaviors to avoid weight gain seen in bulimia nervosa. This multisite study of BED involved 1,785 subjects drawn from 18 weight control programs, 942 subjects from five nonpatient community samples, and 75 patients with bulimia nervosa. Approximately 29% of subjects in weight control programs met the criteria for BED. In the nonpatient community samples BED was more common than pur

As mental health challenges continue to rise globally alongside increasing urbanization and treatment barriers, nature-based interventions (NBIs) may provide an accessible, affordable, and low-risk alternative to conventional mental health treatments. This systematic review synthesizes quantitative evidence on the impact of NBIs on mental health outcomes, following PRISMA 2020 guidelines. Randomized controlled trials with a nature-based intervention group and a non-nature control group, reporting at least one mental health outcome, were included. Of 10,113 identified records, 47 trials met the

This scoping review synthesized evidence on the psychosocial burden of tuberculosis (TB) and on evidence-based psychosocial interventions aimed at improving treatment adherence. Specifically, it examined: (a) the most frequent mental health problems associated with TB; (b) the main barriers to adherence; (c) the components and effects of psychosocial interventions; and (d) gaps in the literature and directions for future research. Bibliographic searches were conducted in PubMed and Scopus, covering articles published between 2005 and 2025. Nineteen studies met the inclusion criteria. Depressio

Trichotillomania, a psycho-dermatologic disorder defined by self-inflicted often noticeable hair loss through hair-pulling, is difficult to manage and treat. Its etiology is multifactorial and frequently is complicated by comorbid conditions like anxiety and depression. Evidence-based treatment is limited but options involve a combination of pharmacotherapy and cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT), habit reversal training (HRT), and acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT). Many individuals still struggle with the condition despite therapy efforts. This is the case of a 24-year-old female who has

Huntington's disease (HD) is an inherited, autosomal dominant, degenerative disease characterized by involuntary movements, cognitive decline, and behavioral impairment ending in death. HD is caused by an expansion in the number of CAG repeats in the huntingtin gene on chromosome 4. To date, no effective therapy for preventing the onset or progression of the disease has been found, and many symptoms do not respond to pharmacologic treatment. However, recent results of pre-clinical trials suggest a beneficial effect of stem-cell-based therapy. Induced pluripotent stem cells (iPSCs) represent an
