Prevalence and incidence of osteoporotic vertebral fractures in community-dwelling European older adults: an observational analysis of the DO-HEALTH trial.

UNLABELLED: We examined vertebral fracture (VF) prevalence, incidence, and treatment among 1488 older adults. VF prevalence and incidence were higher in women, older participants, and those with low bone density. In addition to VFs being underdiagnosed (only 20.7% of VFs clinically recognized), treatment rates were low, underscoring the need for improved screening and management. PURPOSE: To estimate prevalence and incidence of osteoporotic VFs and VF progressions overall and by sex, age, and bone status and to describe the proportion of participants with VFs in reporting osteoporosis (OP) me

Cooperation of hearing-impaired elderly subjects for participation in a hearing screening program.

Presbyacusis, the auditory disorder which accompanies the aging process, is well known. However, the practical assistance available to alleviate the breakdown in the communication ability of the older person is unsatisfactory, and provision for public awareness of a rehabilitation strategy has not yet been established in many countries. Four hundred and ninety-eight elderly subjects, aged 65-94 years, were hearing tested in different setups, a geriatric nursing home and in the community. It was found that the need for rehabilitation was high and the willingness to participate in a hearing scre

Handling communication challenges at the emergency department entry: Insights from a Belgian hospital.

OBJECTIVES: Effective communication at the emergency department (ED) is essential for quality care and a positive patient experience. While prior research has focused on communication in clinical encounters, the ED entry and its staff remain understudied. This study explores the communication challenges faced by staff at the ED entry and the strategies they use to handle them. METHODS: This study is part of a larger linguistic ethnographic study in a Belgian hospital's ED. Ethnographic observations informed 11 semi-structured interviews with ED entry staff (medical administration staff, dispa

Exploring the Roles of Trust, Attitudes, and Motivations in COVID-19 Decision-Making and Vaccination Likelihood: Insights from the Louisiana Community Engagement Alliance (LA-CEAL) Community-Academic-Public Health-Practice (CAPP) Partnership.

Given the increasing integration of trusted leaders in public health science, including vaccination programs, context-specific understandings of community perceptions and levels of trust are critical to intervention. This study aimed to understand the perspectives and attitudes of the southeastern Louisiana community and inform the development of a community-engaged action plan. A cross-sectional survey of 555 southeastern Louisianans-including faith-based organization (FBO) members, community pharmacy (CommRx) customers, community-based organization (CBO) contacts, and Louisiana community-dwe

Resident and Caregiver Dyads Talk About Death and Dying in Assisted Living: A Typology of Communication Behaviors.

BACKGROUND: In the U.S., assisted living (AL) is increasingly a site of death, and anxiety about dying has been identified in long-term care residents and their caregivers. Communication about death and dying is associated with better quality of life and care at end of life (EOL). OBJECTIVE: To understand communication behaviors used by AL residents and their informal caregivers (i.e., family members or friends) related to death and dying, and address communication needs or opportunities applicable to EOL care in AL. DESIGN: A thematic analysis of in-depth interviews and fieldnotes from a su

Marginalization and Community Perception of HIV Care, Treatment, and Support on Mfangano Island, Kenya.

BACKGROUND: In rural sub-Saharan Africa (SSA), the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV)/AIDS pandemic has exerted effects on nearly every aspect of life. Yet despite the pandemic's near ubiquitous impacts, major barriers to HIV care, treatment, and support persist. Compounding the barriers to care is the incredible complexity and diversity of experience across different sociocultural contexts. OBJECTIVES: This exploratory community-based participatory study aimed to generate an explanatory model about how geographic and socioeconomic marginalization shape community perception of HIV care, treat

Exploring Community Readiness for Preconception Care: A Qualitative Assessment of Stakeholder Perspectives.

Maternal mortality remains a global concern, with more than 700 women losing their lives each day in 2023. Preconception care (PCC) improves maternal and child health by addressing preventable risks. Assessing community readiness ensures effective implementation. The study aims to assess community readiness for PCC interventions using the Community Readiness Model to identify local barriers and facilitators. This qualitative study used an exploratory approach to evaluate community readiness for PCC, incorporating diverse stakeholder perspectives. It was conducted in selected villages within th

Prevalence and correlates of restricted community mobility in a population-based cohort of adults with systemic lupus erythematosus.

OBJECTIVE: Restrictions in community mobility, defined as the frequency of and help required to travel to 'life-spaces' (bedroom, home, yard, neighbourhood and town), are associated with poor outcomes among older adults. We aimed to describe and explore factors associated with community mobility among adults with SLE. METHODS: We assessed community mobility cross-sectionally in a population-based SLE cohort (October 2019 to May 2022), using the University of Alabama Birmingham Study of Aging Life-Space Assessment (UAB LSA) (score range, 0-120; higher scores=greater community mobility). 'I can't go to her when I have a problem': sexuality communication between South African adolescent girls and young women and their mothers.

Parent-adolescent sexuality communication, the process in which parents and their adolescent children discuss sexuality and sexual and reproductive health, is a key component for adolescents' protective behaviours. Open communication with parents, particularly mothers, enables informed sexual and reproductive health (SRH) decision-making amongst adolescent girls and young women (AGYW). As part of a qualitative study evaluating a South African combination HIV prevention intervention for AGYW, we explored perspectives on SRH communication among AGYW and mothers of AGYW, and the effects of the in

Adolescent sexual health communication and condom use: a meta-analysis.

OBJECTIVE: Condom use is critical for the health of sexually active adolescents, and yet many adolescents fail to use condoms consistently. One interpersonal factor that may be key to condom use is sexual communication between sexual partners; however, the association between communication and condom use has varied considerably in prior studies of youth. The purpose of this meta-analysis was to synthesize the growing body of research linking adolescents' sexual communication to condom use, and to examine several moderators of this association. METHOD: A total of 41 independent effect sizes fr

Holding Together in Hard Times: Family Cohesion as a Moderator of Mental Health Amidst Community Violence.

This study assessed (1) the prevalence of witnessing violence and personal victimization, (2) links between community violence exposure (CVE) and depressive and PTSD symptoms, and (3) family cohesion as a moderator in these associations among rural Mexican adults. Data were drawn from a larger mixed methods study with 200 Mexican adults (ages of 20-60; Mage = 40.7; 79.5% women) from the State of Mexico. Preliminary analyses indicated that participants reported more experiences of witnessing violence than personal victimization. Hierarchical regression analyses revealed that only witnessing vio

Adult Social Day Services: A Promising, Yet Underutilized Community-Based Support for Individuals With Alzheimer's Disease and Related Dementias.

As Alzheimer's disease and related dementias (ADRD) become more common, there is a growing need for programs that improve the quality of life for individuals living with these conditions. Understanding existing community-based models of engagement is essential for identifying effective, scalable solutions. Adult Social Day Services (ASDS) offer opportunities for socialization and cognitive engagement for individuals who require minimal assistance with activities of daily living. Although promising, ASDS programs are used unevenly, and their overall effectiveness remains unclear. To address thi

Routine blood tests and machine learning identify complications in high myopia.

High myopia can lead to cataract, glaucoma, retinal detachment, choroidal neovascularisation, and macular degeneration, causing irreversible vision loss. Imaging detects these complications, but population screening is limited by equipment, and specialist availability. Here we show that a machine learning model using routine blood test results identifies people at increased risk of complications related to high myopia during standard health examinations. We develop the model in a multicentre study of 10,661 participants and validate it in two independent cohorts. The model shows high accuracy

There Is More Than Meets the Eye: The Dual Role of Perception in Shaping Color Lexicons.

Color's ultimate physical reality is continuous, and yet human beings "cut" this continuum into a rather small number of categories reflected in their languages' color lexicon. There are striking cross-linguistic differences in the color lexicon, which are primarily attributed to differences in communicative needs, but also striking commonalities, attributed to a common human perceptual system. Here, we challenge this notion of a uniform perceptual structure by experimentally comparing participants from two populations, French from France and Himba from Namibia. They differ in the amount of ex

Writing development in deaf adults: a longitudinal study in sign-mediated contexts.

This qualitative longitudinal multiple-case study examined written Catalan development in four deaf adults with limited formal literacy attending a Catalan Sign Language-mediated community literacy course taught by a Deaf instructor. Twelve focal texts, collected at initial, midpoint, and final course-embedded writing occasions, were analyzed across orthography, lexical resources, morphosyntax, cohesion, and discourse organization. Participant-level trajectories and complete focal texts provided the primary basis for interpretation. Later productions were generally longer and showed broader co

Word Choice Affects Social Judgments: Relational Messages Containing Low-Frequency Words Get Low Evaluations.

Prior research found a word complexity effect: Authors who use complex words are less favorably received when writing academic essays, business letters, and other relatively formal communications. The present study tested if word choice affects evaluations of messages between friends (Experiments 1-2) and spoken messages (Experiment 2). Three widespread dimensions of social judgments were studied - namely, persuasiveness, competence, and sincerity. Participants read/heard messages that varied (between-participants) by ordinary versus low-frequency words (sad vs. forlorn). Messages containing l

Pragmatic features in patients with schizophrenia.

Schizophrenia is a heterogeneous disorder. Despite the fact that communication and language skills may be impaired in schizophrenia, only a few studies have examined specific aspects of pragmatic competence in these patients. Therefore, this study aimed to compare the pragmatic skills of schizophrenic patients and a control group. Forty-three schizophrenic patients with a Mean ± SD age of 40 ± 1.21 years old and a control group were assessed using the Adult Pragmatics Profile (APP), which is a validated tool consisting of three scales: verbal, nonverbal and paralinguistic.
