Keratitis ichthyosis deafness syndrome is a rare congenital ectodermal disorder. It appears to be genetically heterogeneous and may be caused by mutations in the connexin 26 (Cx26) gene (GJB2) or in the connexin 30 gene. It is characterized by the association of ichthyosis-like skin lesions, hearing loss, and vascularizing keratitis. A 68-year-old man presented with 4 firm, flesh-colored, and slightly erythematous nodules located on the superior pole and lobule of each ear. Although reluctant to provide details, it was discovered he had pierced his ears approximately 10 years earlier, and the nodules developed at the sites of the piercings. Keloids were suggested clinically and the lesions were excised. Microscopic examination demonstrated epithelialized tracts surrounded by a granulomatous infiltrate of macrophages, lymphocytes, and plasma cells. Closer examination revealed minute brown-black particles within macrophages.

We studied by immunocytochemistry the expression of AM in human carotid bodies, sampled at autopsy from 16 adult subjects (mean age+/-S.D.: 44.3+/-3.4 years) and from six fetuses (mean gestational age+/-S.D.: 167+/-11 days). We report four cases of scombroid poisoning. During a lunch meeting three males had the same dish: a club sandwich with raw tuna. All developed erythema over the face and neck within two hours of eating the tuna. The severity of symptoms varied. Other symptoms were profuse sweating, a feeling of intense thirst and palpitations.
