We have previously reported that swellings caused by haptens, such as 2,4,6-trinitrochlorobenzene (TNCB), may be associated with the extracellular signal-regulated kinase (ERK)-induced proliferation pathway. However, the involvement of the Spred/Sprouty family as critical negative regulators of the Ras/Raf/ERK signaling pathway at disease sites is not well-established. Thus, in the present study, the effects of hapten-challenge on the expression levels of genes and proteins associated with the Spred/Sprouty family in the ear of mice were investigated. The activation of ERK and epidermal growth

Plant-based diets and veganism are receiving increased attention for many reasons. Leading international nutrition organizations have determined that a well-planned and balanced plant-based diet is protective against such chronic diseases as obesity, diabetes, and cardiovascular diseases. Many physicians may be unaware of its potential advantages, especially in the field of dermatology, and for this reason the vegan diet is often discouraged. Although the literature about diet in dermatology is limited, the introduction of foods of plant origin, vitamin B12 supplements, and elimination of anim

Lichenoid granulomatous dermatitis, also known as giant cell lichenoid dermatitis, represents an uncommon mixed-pattern dermatitis with histopathologic features of interface dermatitis with band-like lymphocytic inflammation of the dermal-epidermal junction, with thinning of the epidermis or lichen planus-like changes, and granulomatous inflammation involving the dermis. Lichenoid granulomatous dermatitis can manifest with a variety of primary lesions and has various clinical associations. We present a challenging clinicopathologic case of lichenoid granulomatous dermatitis in a 58-year-old wo

BACKGROUND: Contact dermatitis (CD) is a common inflammatory disease of the skin. CD has a complex and multifaceted treatment, and one of the main components of CD treatment is inflammation management. We summarized the clinical trials exploring the effects of herbal medicine on patients with CD.
METHODS: A systematic review was performed by searching four databases. Clinical trials in English investigating the effect of herbal medicines on CD prevention and treatment published from 2010 to 2020 were reviewed. This study was conducted based on the PRISMA guidelines.
RESULTS: Nine clinical tr

Nivolumab is an immune checkpoint inhibitor acting on programmed cell death protein 1 (PD-1) that has been used to treat a growing number of malignancies. Cutaneous side effects are common with nivolumab treatment, though they are typically self-limited. Here we present a case of persistent lichenoid dermatitis in a patient treated with nivolumab for renal cell cancer. The patient then developed Stevens-Johnson syndrome 9 months after initiation of nivolumab, with no other identifiable offending medication in the interim. Although an unusual presentation, a growing number of cases have reporte

OBJECTIVE: The role of the gut microbiome in the onset and development of atopic dermatitis (AD) has been postulated. Thus, we investigated the gut microbial compositions in infants with and without AD and compared the gut bacterial flora of their mothers.
METHODS: The prospective and cross-sectional study participated in 44 pairs of mothers and children. We selected infants born via full-term normal vaginal delivery and no history of antibiotic or probiotic use and infection during the first three months of life. The 15 pairs, consisting of nine healthy infants and six AD infants, were inclu

A cluster study to classify atopic dermatitis (AD) phenotypes into subgroups is required to better understand and manage the disease owing to the heterogeneity of its clinical features. This study aimed to identify the phenotypic subgroups of childhood AD according to allergic sensitization. In 258 children with AD, hierarchical cluster analysis based on specific immunoglobulin (Ig) E sensitization revealed four distinct clusters. Cluster A (n = 71) revealed no IgE sensitization, whereas cluster B (n = 28) showed sensitization to egg white only. Cluster B was highly associated with early-onset

Atopic dermatitis is a chronic as well as widespread skin disease which has significant influence on the life attributes of affected people and their families. Systemic immunosuppressive drugs can be utilised for effective care of disease, although they are often prescribed for rigorous disruption or disease that is complicated to manage. Therefore, topical applications of corticosteroids are considered the primary pharmacologic therapies for atopic dermatitis, and research recommends that these medications might be helpful in preventing disease flare-ups. However, topical medicine administrat

Radiation-induced dermatitis is a common complication of radiotherapy. In Spain, the manufactured products used to prevent and treat that condition consist of emollient creams (which are often ineffective) or corticosteroids (which can cause dermal atrophy and other adverse effects). However, we have found that topically applied melatonin, a product that to our knowledge is not commercially available in Spain, is safe and effective in the prevention and treatment of radiodermatitis and a viable substitute for corticosteroid therapy. In this report, we describe the use of compounded melatonin i

BACKGROUND: Allergic contact dermatitis caused by topical ophthalmic medications (OftACD) is frequently difficult to confirm with patch testing and, therefore, it is considered uncommon.
METHODS: We collected retrospective data from a cohort of 65 patients with suspected OftACD patch tested in our Dermatology Unit (2005-2021) according to ESCD guidelines, using a series of topical drugs and excipients (Chemotechnique Diagnostics), including betaxolol and timolol 5% pet. kindly supplied by the pharmaceutical industry. A chemical peel is chemexfoliation, a process of application of a chemical substance to the skin that causes controlled chemical destruction of the epidermis with or without part of the dermis leading to skin regeneration and remodeling. It can be classified depending upon the depth of penetration into superficial, medium, and deep peels. Among various indications, peels can be used to enhance treatment within a variety of conditions including skin- rejuvenation, inflammatory disorders like acne, rosacea, acne scar, and pigmentary disorders like melasma, freckles, lentigens, dyschromia, and po

Atopic dermatitis (AD) is a chronic, inflammatory skin condition commonly affecting infants with notable sparing of the diaper region. Though sources anecdotally attribute this sparing to the physical barrier formed by the diaper and the subsequent retention of moisture, urine, sweat and feces, no studies have formally investigated the factors contributing to this sparing phenomenon. We performed a scoping literature review to investigate the factors involved in sparing of AD in the diaper region, namely humidity, scratching, urine, sweat, feces, and microbiome composition. A total of 130 pape

BACKGROUND: Contact allergy and atopic dermatitis (AD) are both common inflammatory T cell-mediated diseases and many factors may influence the prevalence of contact allergy in AD patients. In children, their possible correlation was debated with conflicting results.
OBJECTIVES: The present study aimed to assess the prevalence of contact sensitivity in children and to investigate the association with AD.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: A retrospective multicentre study on children aged from 0 to 14 years patch tested between January 2017 and December 2018 was performed. Children were consecutively pa
