A 42-year-old male presented with a two-month history of right upper quadrant abdominal pain, worsening over four days. Six months earlier, he had undergone a laparoscopic cholecystectomy. Examination revealed no jaundice or tenderness, and liver function tests were normal. The patient's basic inflammatory markers were within the normal range. Ultrasound revealed a residual gallbladder stump or dilated cystic duct with a calculus, and magnetic resonance cholangiopancreatography (MRCP) demonstrated a 3 × 1 cm stump with an 8 mm hypointense focus. Endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography (

LMNA-associated congenital muscular dystrophy is a currently incurable rare genetic disorder characterized by early-onset muscle weakness, dilated cardiomyopathy, and respiratory failure, resulting from mutations in the LMNA gene. In this study, we assessed the potential of a CRISPR-mediated strategy to eliminate the mutant allele Lmna c.745C>T, p.R249W using a mutation-specific guide (sg745T). Results from R249W-mutation-carrying cellular models showed specific activity of the Cas9/sg745T complex toward the mutant allele. This property varied depending on the concentration of CRISPR component

AIM: Chronic venous disease is a common pathology characterized by valvular incompetence and venous hypertension. The venous network of the lymph nodes at the Scarpa triangle connects the superficial and the deep venous systems. This study aimed to describe infrainguinal intranodal venous dilatations and to evaluate the connection with peripheral venous disease.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: The study included 183 subjects (116 women, 67 men) who underwent Doppler ultrasound examinations of the venous system of the inferior limb in the context of chronic venous disease. The diagnosis of lymph node va

Atrial fibrillation (AF) is the most common arrhythmia in the world. However, deglutition-induced tachyarrhythmias are exceptionally rare. Diagnosis relies on a documented history, Holter monitoring and echocardiograms. The mechanism underlying deglutition-induced tachycardia remains uncertain, with leading hypotheses suggesting mechanical left atrial stimulation after esophageal distention or activation of the vagus nerve due to increased intra-esophageal pressure. Lifestyle changes, medications (e.g., beta-blockers and antiarrhythmics), and radiofrequency catheter ablation are viable treatme

In the genesis and progression of cardiovascular diseases involving both innate and adaptive immune responses, inflammation plays a pivotal and dual role. Studies in experimental animals indicate that certain immune responses are protective, while others exacerbate the disease. T-helper (Th) 1 cell immune responses are recognized as key drivers of inflammatory progression in cardiovascular diseases. Consequently, the CD4+CD25+FOXP3+ regulatory T cells (Tregs) are gaining increasing attention for their roles in inflammation and immune regulation. Given the critical role of Tregs in maintaining

Cancer of the penis is a rare tumor that occurs in the elderly. Because of its rarity, it is often not diagnosed early, and its treatment poses difficulties for practicing oncologists. We report the case of an elderly patient treated for locally advanced squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) of the penis, with a review of the literature. A 71-year-old man, who had been complaining of pruritus on the penis two years ago, presented with an ulcerated lesion on the prepuce and the glans. A biopsy of the lesion with pathological study showed a SCC of the penis. Pelvic MRI showed tumor thickening centered o

Pancreatic neuroendocrine tumors (PNETs) are relatively rare, especially in the pediatric age group. This report describes a pediatric case of acute pancreatitis secondary to stenosis of the main pancreatic duct due to a PNET. The patient was a boy, thirteen and a half years old, who presented with persistent low-grade fever, nausea, and abdominal pain. He was diagnosed with acute pancreatitis based on the elevation of serum pancreatic enzyme levels and abdominal ultrasonography findings of enlargement of the pancreas and dilatation of the main pancreatic duct. Abdominal contrast-enhanced comp

Dilated cardiomyopathy (DCM) is a cardiac disease marked by the stretching and thinning of the heart muscle and impaired left ventricular contractile function. While most patients do not develop significant cardiac diseases from myocarditis, disparate immune responses can affect pathological outcomes, including DCM progression. These altered immune responses, which may be caused by genetic variance, can prolong cytotoxicity, induce direct cleavage of host protein, or encourage atypical wound healing responses that result in tissue scarring and impaired mechanical and electrical heart function.

Aortic aneurysms, including abdominal aortic aneurysms (AAAs), is the second most prevalent aortic disease and represents an important cause of death worldwide. AAA is a permanent dilation of the aorta on its infrarenal portion, pathologically associated with oxidative stress, proteolysis, vascular smooth muscle cell loss, immune-inflammation, and extracellular matrix remodeling and degradation. Most epidemiological studies have shown a potential protective role of diabetes mellitus (DM) on the prevalence and incidence of AAA. The effect of DM on AAA might be explained mainly by two factors: h

Here, we discuss a case of a 42-year-old premenopausal female who presented with chronic pelvic pain and recurrent small bowel obstruction during menstruation. The patient reported a nine-year history of pelvic pain and a four-year history of episodic small bowel obstruction requiring multiple prior inpatient admissions. During these admissions, the obstruction was managed conservatively with bowel rest and nasogastric tube placement; however, symptoms would recur with subsequent menstrual cycles. Computed tomography showed diffusely dilated loops of small bowel with a transition point in the

UNLABELLED: Understanding the meaning of parvovirus B19 (PB19V) in an etiology of dilated cardiomyopathy (DCM) is difficult. Viruses change the dynamics of the mitochondria by interfering with the mitochondrial process/function, causing the alteration of mitochondrial morphology. In this study, the ultrastructural changes in the mitochondria in endomyocardial biopsy (EMB) samples from patients with DCM and PB19V were determined.
METHODS: The PB19V evaluation was performed in EMB specimens by real-time PCR in 20 patients (age: 28 ± 6 years). The biopsy specimens were examined by histo- and imm

Hysteroscopy provides a minimally invasive strategy to evaluate intrauterine pathology and manage conditions such as abnormal uterine bleeding, infertility, intrauterine adhesions, müllerian anomalies, and intrauterine foreign bodies. Increasing access to hysteroscopy procedures in the office has the potential to improve patient care by minimizing financial and logistical barriers, aiding in streamlined diagnosis and treatment planning, and potentially averting unnecessary operative procedures and anesthesia. Office hysteroscopy refers to procedures performed in outpatient settings where pain

Cerebral cavernous malformation (CCM) is a cerebromicrovascular disease that affects up to 0.5% of the population. Vessel dilation, decreased endothelial cell-cell contact, and loss of junctional complexes lead to loss of brain endothelial barrier integrity and hemorrhagic lesion formation. Leakage of hemorrhagic lesions results in patient symptoms and complications, including seizures, epilepsy, focal headaches, and hemorrhagic stroke. CCMs are classified as sporadic (sCCM) or familial (fCCM), associated with loss-of-function mutations in KRIT1/CCM1, CCM2, and PDCD10/CCM3. Identifying the CCM

Galectin-3 as a cardiac biomarker has proven to be a significant prognostic tool in adults. However, it has not yet been established in the pediatric population as a biomarker in daily clinical practice. The aim of the study was to summarize the current knowledge on galectin-3 as a biomarker in children with cardiac conditions by reviewing the literature. Bibliographic databases such as PubMed, Web of Science and Embase were searched, and consequently twelve articles met the inclusion criteria. Supplemental handsearching of references delivered one additional source. These prospective studies

BACKGROUND: Schwannomas can occur in the body where nerve sheaths are present. Genitourinary schwannomas are very rare, especially primary bladder schwannomas. They account for only 0.1% of bladder tumours. The literature reports that simple surgical resection has a good effect and prognosis.
CASE PRESENTATION: A 39-year-old man had no significant improvement in symptoms due to frequent urination and urgency for 1 month following the treatment of prostatitis for 2 weeks. Ultrasound and computed tomography (CT) showed a mass in the left side wall of the bladder (size approximately 2.0 × 1.9 cm

Colorectal juvenile polyp as a pathologic entity was first described by Verse. These non-neoplastic lesions are most commonly found in children and infants, while in older children after the age of 14 and adults are a rare phenomenon. A 75-year-old female underwent colonoscopy. There was a pedunculated polyp in the transverse colon. Complete endoscopic electroresection of this polyp was performed and the polyp was sent for histopathologic analysis. Macroscopically, the polyp was described as a fragment of irregular round shape, size of about 2.5x2x1 cm, with fine-grained, reddish surface, show
