Isolation of Malassezia pachydermatis and M. sympodialis from the external ear canal of cats with and without otitis externa.

The objective of this study was to determine the presence of Malassezia spp. in the external ear canal of cats with and without otitis. Forty-five animals were studied, 20 with and 25 without otitis externa (OE). Cerumen or secretion from external ear canal samples was cultured on modified Mycosel agar and sterile olive oil was added to the surface of the medium before specimen seeding. The isolates were analysed for macro- and micromorphology and identified by catalase tests and on the basis of growth on Tween 20, 40, 60 and 80. Malassezia spp. were isolated from 15 out of 20 (75%) animals wi

They only see it when the sun shines in my ears: exploring perceptions of adolescent hearing aid users.

Hard-of-hearing (HOH) young people may encounter multiple challenges to their educational, social, and emotional development. The benefits of wearing hearing aids to enhance communication may be countered by negative stigma associated with hearing aids. This study explored the experience of 16 bilaterally, moderately to severely HOH adolescents in mainstream education to understand their perceptions of using hearing aids. A core category of "normality" emerged from the data, which captures the predominant issue for these young people. The sense of being normal may be situationally determined,

Occurrence and population size of Malassezia spp. in the external ear canal of dogs and cats both healthy and with otitis.

Malassezia yeasts are commensal organisms of human and animal skin that occasionally act as pathogens; lipid-dependent species are associated with human skin disorders. The aim of this work was to evaluate the occurrence, risk factors and population size of different species of Malassezia in the external ear canal of dogs and cats with and without otitis externa. Between 2001 and 2003, 107 healthy animals (25 cats and 82 dogs) and 123 animals with chronic otitis exteirna (48 cats and 75 dogs) were clinically examined. Sterile cotton swabs were used to collect specimens from the external ear ca

[Magnetic resonance findings in a case of Gradenigo syndrome: widespread inflammation involving the paranasal sinuses and middle ear].

Gradenigo syndrome is a rare condition consisting of otitis media, trigeminal neuralgia and abducens palsy. We report here a 6-year-old girl with this syndrome. Cranial magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) demonstrated inflammatory lesions in the left petrous apex and cavernous sinus, as well as stenosis of the left carotid artery. She was conservatively treated with antibiotics, which successfully improved her clinical and MRI findings. Surgical treatment including mastoidectomy was avoided. This case illustrates the usefulness of MRI in the diagnosis and management of Gradenigo syndrome.

The effects of ear-point stimulation on the contents of somatostatin and Amino acid neurotransmitters in brain of rat with experimental seizure.

The goal of this study was to elucidate the anti-convulsion mechanisms of ear-point stimulation in rat with experimental seizure. We prepared the epilepsy rats by intrahippocampal injection of penicillin. One hour later the lower 1/2 auricular lobules of seizure rats, containing ear-points Pizhixia and Shenmen etc., was electrically stimulated, which was imitated as ear-point electrical acupuncture in humans. Radioimmunoassay and biochemical techniques were used to determine the contents of somatostatin and amino acid neurotransmitters in hippocampus of rats. The outcomes revealed epileptiform

Zebrafish foxi one modulates cellular responses to Fgf signaling required for the integrity of ear and jaw patterning.

We identified four insertional alleles of foxi one (foo), an embryonic lethal mutation in zebrafish that displays defects in both otic placode and the jaw. In foo/foo embryos the otic placode is split into two smaller placodes and mutant embryos show a dorsoventral (DV) cartilage defect manifested as a reduced hyomandibular and reduced third and fourth branchial arches. We identified foxi one (foo), the zebrafish ortholog of Foxi1 (FREAC6, FKHL10, HFH-3, Fkh10) and a member of the forkhead domain transcriptional regulator family, as the gene mutated in foo/foo embryos. foo is expressed in otic

Production of TNF-alpha by skin explants of dinitrochlorobenzene-challenged ears in rats: a model for the evaluation of contact hypersensitivity.

BACKGROUND: Contact hypersensitivity (CHS) is a local inflammatory response of the skin following challenge of hapten-sensitized animals. It is the consequence of cell infiltration of derm and the release of inflammation mediators, among which Tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-alpha) is one of the most important factors. The intensity of the inflammation could be quantified by ear swelling which is the classical manifestation of the reaction. This study was testing the working hypothesis that levels of TNF-alpha in skin organ culture medium should correlate with the intensity of CHS reaction me

Randomized evaluation of the audiologic outcome of ventilation tube insertion for middle ear effusion in patients with nasopharyngeal carcinoma.

OBJECTIVE: Complications after ventilation tube insertion for middle ear effusion in patients with nasopharyngeal carcinoma are frequent. This may compromise the overall benefit obtained from the procedure. This study evaluates the hearing improvement after tube insertion compared with observation alone to see if the benefits of the procedure outweigh its potential complications. DESIGN: Prospective randomized controlled trial. SETTING: Full clinical and emergency otolaryngologic services hospital in an academic institution. METHODS: Patients with nasopharyngeal carcinoma and middle ear eff

Manipulation of the somatosensory cortex modulates stimulus-induced repetitive ear movements in a seizure-sensitive strain of gerbil.

Some Mongolian gerbils (Meriones unguiculatus) respond to stimulation by seizures, the pattern of which changes progressively during development. We previously established a seizure-sensitive strain, MGS/Idr, in which all animals exhibit such stimulus-induced seizures. We have now noted that all adults of this strain also show repetitive backward movements of the ears at the ears at the beginning of stimulus-induced seizures, although the incidence varies with the individual. We examined whether the cerebral cortex was involved in these movements and found that electrical stimulation of an are

Predominant role of the chorda tympani nerve in the maintenance of the taste pores: the influence of gustatory denervation in ear surgery.

The effect on the taste pores of denervation of the chorda tympani nerve in the middle-ear cavity was studied comparing confocal laser microscopy with lingual nerve resection. Taste pore cells were stained for actin with rhodamine-phalloidin and positive fluorescence was observed as a ring shape at the transverse cross sections. Within three days after chorda tympani nerve resection the ring reaction disappeared, although the pore morphology remained intact as seen by scanning electron microscopy. On the other hand, lingual nerve resection did not induce such rapid disappearance of the ring re

Interactive effects of the middle ear pathology and the associated hearing loss on transient-evoked otoacoustic emission measures.

Sixty-three children aged 4 to 17 years were examined by tympanometry, pure-tone audiometry, transient-evoked otoacoustic emissions (TEOAEs), and otoscopy to evaluate the effects of middle ear pathologies and the associated hearing loss on TEOAEs. TEOAE measures were highly specific (93.8%) in identifying normal ears that passed both audiometric and tympanometric criteria. The sensitivity for identifying abnormal ears was also reasonable (83. 3%). The effects of the middle ear abnormality were most significant, regardless of the degree of hearing loss, when the tympanogram was type B with norm

Results of accelerated radiotherapy for supraglottic carcinoma: a Massachusetts General Hospital and Massachusetts Eye and Ear Infirmary experience.

BACKGROUND: Carcinoma of the supraglottic larynx is a relatively common malignancy treated with either surgery, radiotherapy, or a combined approach. METHODS: The radiotherapy records of 190 patients with carcinoma of the supraglottic larynx treated at the Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH) and Massachusetts Eye and Ear Infirmary (MEEI) from 1981 to 1992 were reviewed. Of these patients, 164 were available for evaluation for local control and 169 for disease-specific survival. The patients were treated with accelerated hyperfractionated radiotherapy to 67.2-72 Gy/1.6 Gy per fraction twice a

Transplantation of lymph node fragments in a rabbit ear lymphedema model: a new method for restoring the lymphatic pathway.

The treatment of lymphedema by medical or surgical means remains a difficult task, and no technique is presently satisfactory. We established a rabbit ear chronic lymphedema model in which sequential lymph node fragments were transplanted to restore lymphatic pathways. Twenty New Zealand White rabbits were divided into two groups of 10 animals. One group served as the control, and the other was the transplantation group. A 3-cm-wide strip of skin and subcutaneous tissue including all the lymphatics was excised circumferentially from the root part of the right ear in each rabbit. The vascular p

[On surgical strategies in the treatment of patients with chronic purulent otitis media with different nature of pathology of the middle ear].

Long-term outcomes of surgery have been analysed for 684 patients with OMCP in terms of possible implications of the severity and kind of pathological processes in the middle ear as well as the operative procedure on functional and anatomic results of tympanoplasty. Early surgical interventions in OMCP are preferable because they allow "closed" tympanoplasty. Maximal removal of hypertrophic inflammation-affected parts of the tympanic mucosa promotes functional effectiveness of the operation in view of higher position of the stapes achieved with the help of combined prostheses. The "open" varia

Eya1 expression in the developing ear and kidney: towards the understanding of the pathogenesis of Branchio-Oto-Renal (BOR) syndrome.

Branchio-Oto-Renal (BOR) syndrome is an autosomal dominant, early developmental defect characterised by varying combinations of branchial (fistulas, sinuses, and cysts), outer, middle and inner ear, and renal anomalies. The gene underlying this syndrome, EYA1, is homologous to the Drosophila developmental gene eyes absent which encodes a transcriptional co-activator required for eye specification. We report here the temporal and spatial pattern of expression of the murine homologue, Eya1, throughout ear and kidney development in relation to the anomalies of BOR syndrome. The expression of Eya1

Mouse pale ear (ep) is homologous to human Hermansky-Pudlak syndrome and contains a rare 'AT-AC' intron.

Hermansky-Pudlak syndrome (HPS) is a rare, often fatal, autosomal recessive disorder in which albinism, bleeding and lysosomal storage are associated with defects of diverse cytoplasmic organelles, including melanosomes, platelet dense granules and lysosomes. Similar multi-organellar defects occur in the Chediak-Higashi syndrome (CHS), as well as in a large number of different mouse mutants. The HPS gene is located in 10q23, and two genetically distinct mouse loci, pale ear (ep) and ruby-eye (ru), both with mutant phenotypes similar to human HPS, map close together in the homologous region of
