Age-Based Screening for Lung Cancer Surveillance in the US.

IMPORTANCE: Lung cancer is increasingly diagnosed in never-smokers, suggesting that the current US Preventive Services Task Force (USPSTF) screening criteria using low-dose computed tomography exclude many at-risk individuals, thus raising concerns about their effectiveness and equity. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the proportion, clinical characteristics, and survival of patients with lung cancer who meet or are excluded from USPSTF criteria and to use institutional and published data to model expanded criteria and evaluate age-based screening. DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: Patients with lung

KRAS Mutations in Duodenal Lavage Fluid After Secretin Stimulation for Detection of Pancreatic Cancer.

OBJECTIVE: Although pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDAC) is still a devastating disease, the survival rate for surgically removed PDACs has significantly improved in recent years. Early detection is essential in managing PDAC. BACKGROUND: The presence of KRAS mutations in PDAC leads to the initial genetic abnormality and offers a significant timeframe for identifying resectable PDACs. A minimally invasive and highly specific PDAC screening test is necessary to prevent the need for invasive follow-up tests. METHODS: Between July 2021 and March 2023, 169 cases were enrolled in 7 institution

Which women go for screening?

Cancer accounts for approximately one-third of deaths in developed countries. Preventing cancer, notably by detecting new cases early, is thus crucial. In the European Union (EU), screening rates have been recommended for several types of cancer; however, most EU countries are still not meeting them. Determining how we can improve people's adherence to screening is necessary. This study aimed to explore the characteristics of women associated with being up-to-date on mammograms or Pap smears; notably, we wanted to determine the extent to which women's attitudes towards risk play a role in thei

Breast Cancer Barriers to Education and Screening in People Experiencing Homelessness.

BACKGROUND: Each year in the United States, approximately 42,211 women and men die from breast cancer. Individuals experiencing homelessness are disproportionately affected, facing a higher incidence of the disease. People experiencing homelessness (PEH) have a higher incidence of breast cancer and mortality than domiciled individuals. Across all 50 states, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention provides free breast cancer screenings for eligible individuals with limited financial resources. However, PEH have screening rates that remain below the national average. Early detection is cr

Epigenetic assessments of alcohol consumption predict mortality in smokers at risk for lung cancer in the prostate, lung, colorectal and ovarian cancer screening trial.

DNA methylation at cg05575921, an established biomarker for smoking predicts risk for lung cancer (LC). Although heavy alcohol consumption (HAC) frequently accompanies smoking, the relationship of HAC to overall mortality in those at risk for LC is not well known. Determining the contribution of HAC to mortality in those who smoke is important because HAC is also a major driver of mortality and is potentially treatable. To help answer this question, we examined the relationship of epigenetic biomarkers of smoking (cg05575921) and chronic heavy alcohol consumption (Alcohol T Score, ATS) in a co

Comparison of PSA Values from capillary dried blood spot analysis and venous serum samples.

Prostate-specific antigen (PSA) testing is a key tool in the early detection and monitoring of prostate cancer. While venous blood is the standard matrix for PSA measurement, capillary blood sampling represents a minimally invasive alternative that may facilitate broader access to testing. This prospective study investigated the agreement between capillary and venous measurements of total and free PSA in 224 male patients at ALTA Klinik Bielefeld, Germany. Blood samples were collected between April and June 2021 and analyzed using electrochemiluminescence immunoassays. The results showed stron

Machine learning-enhanced gas sensor technology identifies ovarian and endometrial cancer of all stages through plasma volatile organic compound patterns.

BACKGROUND: Ovarian cancer presents with non-specific symptoms that make early diagnosis challenging and the prognosis poor. Ovarian and endometrial cancers exhibit similar genomic mutations and biomarker profiles. Endogenous volatile organic compounds (VOCs) are products of metabolic activity. In cancer, metabolites increase due to tumour necrosis, leading to cancer-specific VOC patterns. The aim of this study was to evaluate VOC analyses in plasma as diagnostic tests for early diagnosis of ovarian and endometrial cancer. METHODS: Preoperative plasma from 133 women with ovarian cancer (stage
