Shift work and BMI in nursing professionals: A cross-sectional mediation analysis through psychological distress and irregular eating patterns.

BackgroundShift work is a well-established occupational risk factor for psychological strain in healthcare professionals, yet its association with physical health outcomes such as body mass index (BMI) remains inconsistent. Drawing on a biopsychosocial and occupational health psychology framework, this study examined the psychological and behavioral pathways that may underlie the association between shift work and BMI in nursing professionals.ObjectiveTo examine, using a cross-sectional structural equation modeling approach, whether psychological distress and irregular eating patterns were ass

A vision-based deep learning framework enables high-accuracy prediction of Geng rice eating quality and facilitates QTL mapping.

Geng rice (Oryza sativa subsp. japonica) from northeast China dominates the country's high-value rice market because of its superior eating quality. However, current methods for quality evaluation rely on either labor-intensive, subjective sensory protocols or low-accuracy, calibration-heavy near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS), thus hindering breeding efforts for high eating quality and market development. Here, we report a vision-based deep learning framework that combines multi-population fine-tuning with industrial vision-language model (VLM) pre-training to predict the eating quality of Geng

Multidimensional body image and self-esteem: a latent profile analysis differentiating orthorexia nervosa and exercise addiction from disordered eating.

BACKGROUND: Orthorexia Nervosa (ON), the obsessive preoccupation with healthy eating, and Exercise Addiction (EA), the behavioral addiction to exercise, are controversially discussed as potential mental disorders. The unclear distinction between these conditions and disordered eating, especially regarding restrictive eating and instrumental exercise behaviors, contributes to this debate. The objective of the study was to ascertain whether latent profiles can be identified that support the independence of ON and EA from disordered eating. It was hypothesized that ON profiles would be characteri

Healthy Eating Index-2020 and Trabecular Bone Score in US Adults: A Cross-Sectional Analysis of NHANES 2005-2008.

OBJECTIVE: Osteoporosis is a growing public health burden. Trabecular bone score (TBS) from dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA) reflects trabecular microarchitecture and predicts fractures beyond bone mineral density (BMD). The relationship between Healthy Eating Index 2020 (HEI-2020) and TBS is unknown. METHODS: We modeled the HEI-2020 in relation to TBS in a cross-sectional sample from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) 2005-2008 (n = 7,007), using multivariable linear regression, restricted cubic splines for nonlinearity, stratified and interaction analyses fo

Previously undocumented regional variability in crab-eating macaque skull sexual dimorphism and its implications for biological and morphometric studies.

In a large sample of adult crab-eating macaques, we quantified sexual dimorphism in size, shape, and covariance across the whole skull and among anatomical regions of the cranium and mandible. All regions showed significant mean sex differences, but the magnitude of size and shape dimorphism varied substantially. Shape dimorphism displayed particularly pronounced extremes of variation in specific regions. Males were consistently more variable than females. However, sex differences in size variance were significant, whereas differences in shape variance were typically nonsignificant. The chondr

Compulsive exercise in higher levels of eating disorder care: Trajectory of change over time among adolescents with anorexia nervosa.

Compulsive exercise is commonly observed in adolescent anorexia nervosa (AN) and relates to more severe eating disorder pathology and worse outcomes. Within higher levels of care (HLOC) for eating disorders, physical activity is often restricted in an attempt to reduce compulsive exercise; yet, the effectiveness of these restrictions across levels of care remains understudied. The current study examined how compulsive exercise presents and changes within HLOC as individuals with AN transition from settings with greater supervision to those with more autonomy over movement. Given the central ro

Body Image and Eating Disorder Education Chatbot, JEM, in Australia and Canada: First 6-Month Real-World Survey Evaluation.

BACKGROUND: Body image dissatisfaction, disordered eating, and eating disorders represent significant public health concerns; however, many affected individuals never access evidence-based support. We co-designed and developed a rule-based chatbot, JEM, which conducts conversations addressing evidence-based psychoeducation and psychotherapeutic microinterventions. We previously demonstrated the feasibility, acceptability, and preliminary satisfaction of the JEM chatbot in a research setting. However, broader satisfaction, experiences, and user-reported outcomes in real-world settings have not

Catch My Drift: Building Scalable and Sustainable Models for Promoting Clinician Adherence to Evidence-Based Treatments for Eating Disorders.

Lock and colleagues showed promising effects for asynchronous virtual training in family-based treatment for anorexia nervosa paired with expert case-based consultation to promote fidelity. In this commentary, we present two promising directions by which to extend these early findings: (1) using AI to scale fidelity monitoring and prevent clinician drift over time; (2) broadening the reach of virtual training models beyond private practice settings to improve the quality of eating disorders services delivered in community settings and narrow the treatment gap.

Eating behaviors and nutritional habits among young adults using electronic nicotine delivery systems in a multinational cross-sectional study.

BACKGROUND: Electronic nicotine delivery systems (ENDS) use is rising among young adults in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region. While marketed as safer alternatives to smoking, their impact on eating behaviors and nutritional habits remains unclear. This study aims to examine the relationship between ENDS use, tobacco smoking, and eating behaviors among young adults in MENA. METHODS: A cross-sectional study was conducted from December 2023 to February 2024 with participants aged 18-35 from Egypt, Iraq, Jordan, Syria, and Saudi Arabia. Data were collected using an online survey and

Structure of family health and its association with obesity-related eating behavior and depressive symptoms: Insights from network analysis.

The health of families is inextricably linked to the health of individuals and communities, providing the foundation for their development. Family health is a multifaceted concept and has been suggested to impact individuals' obesity-related eating behavior and the alleviation of depressive symptoms. However, existing studies have not comprehensively examined the structure of family health and its' potential associations with obesity-related eating behavior and depressive symptoms. The present study employed network analysis to ascertain the most pivotal characteristics within the interdiscipl

From Healthy Eating to Positive Mental Health in Adolescents: A Moderated Mediation Model Involving Stress Management and Peer Support.

Background: Adolescent mental health is a growing public health concern, with increasing prevalence of anxiety, depression, and emotional dysregulation. While nutrition is a recognized factor in physical health, its role in mental well-being, especially through holistic models, remains underexplored. Objectives: This study examines a moderated mediation model in which perceived healthy eating (self-rated diet quality) was associated with positive mental health (PMH) in adolescents, mediated by stress management and moderated by peer social support. Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducte

Associations of Racial Trauma Symptoms With Positive Eating Disorder Screens Among US Young Adults in the Healthy Minds Study.

OBJECTIVE: Racial trauma, defined as the psychological and physiological harm caused by racism and racial discrimination, has been associated with mental health problems. Although traumatic experiences have consistently and robustly been associated with eating disorders, it is unknown whether racial trauma is associated with eating disorders. This study examined the link between racial trauma symptoms and positive eating disorder screens using a large, population-based sample of US college students. METHOD: Cross-sectional data came from young adults (18-30 years) in the 2022-2023 Healthy Min

Disgust, shame, and guilt: Examining unique relationships with eating disorder, obsessive-compulsive disorder, and post-traumatic stress disorder symptoms.

OBJECTIVE: Obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), and eating disorders (EDs) are frequently comorbid, but mechanisms shared between their comorbidity remain understudied. Interconnected moral emotions, such as disgust, shame, and guilt, show associations with these disorders, yet, no research has tested if these emotions are unique or overlapping factors contributing to symptoms of OCD, PTSD, and EDs. METHOD: The present cross-sectional study (N = 3513) investigated the potential overlap of disgust sensitivity, state shame, and state guilt in a large sampl

Interoception, Self-Injury and Suicidal Ideation in Female Adolescents With Restrictive Eating Disorders and Co-Morbid Borderline Personality Disorder.

AIMS: Both restrictive eating disorders (REDs) and borderline personality disorder (BPD) are characterised by a higher risk of self-injury and suicidal ideation; however, the possible role of altered interoception in modulating such risk is poorly understood. We set out to conduct a clinical study to explore the relationship between interoception, self-injury and suicidal ideation in patients with REDs and BPD. METHODS: We recruited a sample of 75 female adolescents affected by REDs, of whom 21 had co-morbid BPD. In addition to collecting comprehensive demographic and clinical data, we admini

Adolescent Eating Disorder Risk in a Bilingual Region: Clinical Prevalence, Screening Challenges and Treatment Gap in South Tyrol, Italy.

Background/Objectives: Eating disorders (EDs) in adolescents are increasingly prevalent. In South Tyrol, a bilingual region in Northern Italy, not only actual gender and age prevalences can be compared to screening rates, but even the comparability of screening tools across languages can be examined. Methods: A cross-sectional analysis integrated clinical registry data with representative, online school-recruited adolescents (11 to 17) self-reports. 166 clinically diagnosed cases and 1465 screened adolescents (1246 German, 219 Italian), were examined. Longitudinal Associations of Childhood Emotional Maltreatment With Disordered Eating Behaviors: Linking Mechanisms of Repetitive Negative Thinking and Body Dissatisfaction.

OBJECTIVE: The relationship between childhood emotional maltreatment and disordered eating behaviors (DEBs) has been well documented. However, the mechanisms that link these associations are underexplored, and most studies have focused on the roles of emotion-related symptoms or processes. Based on the stress process model, the present study investigated how childhood emotional maltreatment exerts long-term effects on DEBs in adulthood by examining the mediating roles of repetitive negative thinking (RNT) and body dissatisfaction. METHOD: Four-wave and self-report survey data were collected f

Eating Pattern, Rumen Fermentation, and Microbial Population in Dairy Cows Exhibiting Divergent Methane to Carbon Dioxide Ratio in Breath.

This study aimed to elucidate the association of methane (CH4) production with eating behavior, rumen fermentation, and the rumen microbial population among dairy cows with varying CH4 to carbon dioxide (CO2) ratios in their breath, as measured by the sniffer method. Eighteen lactating Holstein cows were divided into three groups: low (LEm), mid (MEm), and high (HEm) CH4:CO2 ratios. Estimated CH4 production was lower in the LEm group than in the HEm group. Daily dry matter intake and milk production did not differ among the groups, whereas body weight was lower in the LEm group than in the MEm

Neurovascular decoupling of frontoparietal cortex-putamen-cerebellum network in type 2 diabetes patient: Potential biomarker for abnormal eating patterns.

AIM: High rates of dropout and binge eating triggered by restrictive diet limit the effectiveness of dietary interventions in type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). However, it remains unclear what the potential central underpinnings of T2DM-specific dietary behavior characteristics are. METHODS: 41 T2DM patients and 43 matched healthy controls (HC) who underwent resting state functional MRI were enrolled to screen for the suspicious network by effective connectivity (EC) analysis and to explore its dynamic temporal and neurovascular coupling properties.
