Lateral epicondilytis is a frequent cause of elbow pain in the adult age population. The purpose of this study was to determine the effects of extracorporeal shock wave therapy (ESWT) effective on long term clinical and functional results in the treatment on patients with lateral epicondylitis. Forty-six patients suffering from lateral epicondylitis for at least 3 months were treated in this study. Clinical evaluation scoring system tests were used before an done year after the treatment for each patients. The VAS improved from 9,3 to 1.8, and the Nirschl values improved from 6,4 to 4.3. In th

BACKGROUND: Distal biceps ruptures can result in ongoing pain and weakness when treated nonoperatively. If retraction of the tendon renders primary repair impossible, reconstruction using a graft is recommended. The current literature includes a variety of techniques with studies reporting small patient numbers. The aim of this study was to report the results of a larger cohort of patients using a technique modified from those previously described in the literature.
METHODS: Twenty-one consecutive male patients underwent distal biceps reconstruction through 2 small anterior incisions using an

OBJECTIVE: Precise adaptable fixation of a supracondylar humerus osteotomy with a radial/lateral external fixator to correct posttraumatic cubitus varus.
INDICATIONS: Acquired, posttraumatic cubitus varus as a result of a malhealed and unsatisfactorily treated supracondylar humerus fracture. Idiopathic, congenital cubitus varus (very seldom) if the child (independent of age and after complete healing) is cosmetically impaired; stability of the elbow is reduced due to malalignment (hyperextension); secondary problems and pain (e. g., irritation of the ulnar nerve) are expected or already exist

BACKGROUND: The treatment of fractures of the radial head is commonly based on the Mason classification. Fractures of the radial head caused by a dislocation of the elbow are summarized as Mason type IV fractures. The purpose of this study was to investigate the outcome and the influence of additional ligamentous injuries after reconstruction of fractures of the radial head.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: One hundred three patients with a fracture of the radial head were treated by open reduction and internal fixation between 2004 and 2009. Fifty-eight of them could be evaluated at an average of 3.6 y

INTRODUCTION: Coronal plane fractures of the distal humerus involving the capitellum and trochlea are rare. Treatments have evolved from closed reduction to open reduction and internal fixation (ORIF) to achieve a stable joint that allows early mobilization.
BACKGROUND: We determined the functional outcomes of treating coronal plane fractures of the distal humerus with ORIF.
METHODS: We reviewed the records of all patients with coronal plane fractures of the distal humerus treated by ORIF. Fractures were classified according to Bryan and Morrey. Cannulated screws were used for fixation. All

Capitellar fractures are rare. Despite adequate surgical treatment, patients suffer frequently from limited range of motion, osteonecrosis, and neurological deficits. The purpose of this retrospective study was to evaluate short- and medium-term surgical results in seven patients who had type I capitellar fractures according to Bryan and Morrey. All patients were treated via an anterior approach, according to Henry, and open reduction and internal fixation with two screws. Seven patients were examined clinically, neurologically, and radiologically after 10-65 months. The fracture healed in all

BACKGROUND: Knowledge of the pathogenesis of most disorders that occur in the distal upper extremity is generally lacking. The individual roles of postulated etiologic factors, such as biomechanical or psychosocial exposures, are poorly understood and their potential interactions even less so. This article proposes biomechanical or physiological models of pathogenesis for specific distal upper extremity disorders.
METHODS: Tendon entrapment of the dorsal wrist compartments (tenosynovitis), peritendinitis, lateral epicondylitis, and carpal tunnel syndrome are common specific neuromusculoskelet

We performed an audit of 71 children with consecutive displaced, extension-type supracondylar fractures of the humerus over a period of 30 months. The fractures were classified according to the Wilkins modification of the Gartland system. There were 29 type IIA, 22 type IIB and 20 type III. We assessed the effectiveness of guidelines proposed after a previous four-year review of 83 supracondylar fractures. These recommended that: 1) an experienced surgeon should be responsible for the initial management; 2) closed or open reduction of type-IIB and type-III fractures must be supplemented by sta

Arthroscopy : the journal of arthroscopic & related surgery : official publication of the Arthroscopy Association of North America and the International Arthroscopy Association1997eng
Type II capitellar fractures are uncommon. The current treatment recommendation for these fractures is open excision. The major complication of open excision is loss of motion. Two cases of the previously unreported technique of arthroscopic excision are presented with a review of the literature. Arthroscopic excision of displaced type II capitellar fractures is a safe, effective technique that causes minimal soft tissue trauma, allows thorough inspection of the joint for additional occult injuries, and optimizes postoperative range of motion.

The supracondylar fracture of the humerus is the commonest type of elbow fracture in children. The peak incidence for this injury is between 5 and 10 years of age. The complications of these displaced fractures remain challenging problems. The early complications are mostly the neuro-vascular injuries. The difficulty in maintaining the reduction and ultimately the cubitus varus is the most frequent long-term complication with an incidence ranging from 3 to 57%. Adequate reduction and pinning has dramatically decreased this incidence. This paper describes these complications and their treatment

The author has described one of the typical combinations of injuries in the elbow joint area in children, i.e. fractures of the neck of the radius with a simultaneous fracture of the ulna. The study is based on 37 cases observed by the author. Two types of the above-mentioned fractures have been distinguished: abduction (32) and extension (5) fractures. The methods of closed reposition of each type have been presented. These methods allow to reach the desired results even in major dislocations (60-90 degrees) of the head of the radius.

The causes of occurrence of tennis elbow (epicondylitis humeri lateralis) in metal workers were analyzed. It has been found that the disease occurred most often in locksmiths and turners with over 20 years of service. After treatment of 35 patients which consisted in transfer to light work, paying respect to plaster cast immobilization, injections in the region of the muscular insertions and physical therapy, good results were achieved enabling 21 patients to resume their jobs.

BACKGROUD: The rarity and complexity of trans-ulnar basal coronoid fracture-dislocations pose significant challenges in treatment. This study aimed to categorize these fractures based on coronoid fracture patterns and propose tailored surgical approaches for each type. Additionally, we evaluated the functional and radiological outcomes among the patients managed using our treatment algorithm.
METHODS: A total of 19 patients who underwent open reduction and internal fixation for trans-ulnar basal coronoid fracture-dislocations between March 2018 and October 2022 were enrolled in this study. Th

BACKGROUND: Isolated capitellum fractures, though rare, significantly impact elbow function and are often associated with falls on an outstretched hand (FOOSH). This study aims to evaluate the relationship between forearm radiological parameters and fracture complexity, as well as assess clinical outcomes in patients with isolated capitellum fractures.
METHODS: A retrospective cohort analysis was conducted on 28 fractures in 27 patients treated surgically at a tertiary center. Fractures were classified using the Bryan-Morrey system, and forearm parameters (maximum radial bow, location of maxi

BACKGROUND: Capitellar injury (CI) includes capitellar cartilage injury (CCI) and capitellar fracture (CF). A comprehensive classification of CI concurrent with radial head fracture (RHF) that can guide surgical strategy is lacking in the literature. Therefore, this study aimed to introduce a comprehensive classification of CI concurrent with RHF and investigate its value.
METHODS: A total of 35 patients with CI concurrent with RHF confirmed by surgical exploration were retrospectively analyzed, includingmales in 19 cases and females in 16 cases. RHF was classified according to the Mason clas

The incidence of complex articular fractures of the distal humeral in adults has increased and will be growing in the future due to the greater incidence of high energy trauma and to the higher percentage of elderly population. Successful treatment is challenging for the needed balance between a stability of often comminuted fracture and early motion. Nonunion is a common complication after distal humerus fractures that is influenced by a variety of factors such as biology, in particular the blood supply of the metaphysis, the non-anatomical reduction of the fracture, the methods of fixation,

BACKGROUND: A Monteggia fracture is defined as a fracture of the proximal ulna combined with a luxation of the radial head. The aim of the present work is to evaluate the extent of instability of the radius head in the proximal radioulnar joint (PRUJ) as a function of the severity of elbow fracture and ligamentous injury in an experimental biomechanical approach.
METHODS: Eight fresh-frozen cadaver arms were used. All soft tissues were removed except for the ligamentous structures of the PRUJ and forearm. A tensile force of 40 N was exerted laterally, anteriorly or posteriorly onto the proxim
