Infancy predictors of functional somatic symptoms in pre- and late adolescence: a longitudinal cohort study.

UNLABELLED: Physiological regulatory problems in infancy (i.e., problems with sleeping, feeding, and tactile reactivity) have been associated with impairing functional somatic symptoms (FSS) at ages 5-7. We aimed to extend this finding by examining not only the association of physiological regulatory problems but also other infancy factors (i.e., emotion dysregulation and contact problems) with FSS in pre- and late adolescence. Standardized behavioral assessments and self-report questionnaire data from assessment waves at 0-1, 11-12, and 16-17 years of the population-based Copenhagen Child Coh

Neuregulin1β improves both spatial and associative learning and memory in Alzheimer model of rats possibly through signaling pathways other than Erk1/2.

BACKGROUND: Neuregulin-1β (NRG1 β) is associated with various neurological disorders such as schizophrenia, depression and Parkinson's disease. However, its role in Alzheimer's (AD) has not been understood yet. Here, we have studied the effect of NRG1 β and extracellular-signal-regulated kinase (ERK) signaling on special and associative memories and emotional stress in AD model of rats. METHODS: Fifty six male Wistar rats were divided into eight groups of: Saline + Saline, Aβ + Saline, Aβ + NRG1β (5 μg/5 ul), Aβ + PBS, Aβ + NRG1β + PD98059 (PD, 5 μg/2 μl), Aβ + NRG1β + Saline and Saline + PD.

Eye-Movement Intervention Enhances Extinction via Amygdala Deactivation.

Improving extinction learning is essential to optimize psychotherapy for persistent fear-related disorders. In two independent studies (both n = 24), we found that goal-directed eye movements activate a dorsal frontoparietal network and transiently deactivate the amygdala (η p2 = 0.17). Connectivity analyses revealed that this downregulation potentially engages a ventromedial prefrontal pathway known to be involved in cognitive regulation of emotion. Critically, when eye movements followed memory reactivation during extinction learning, it reduced spontaneous fear recovery 24 h later (η p2 = 0

Molecular-level effects of acupuncture on depression: a genome-wide transcriptome analysis of pituitary gland in rats exposed to chronic restraint stress.

OBJECTIVES: Trauma burden and resulting psychopathology disproportionately affect Black adults with limited socioeconomic resources. Mindfulness-Based Cognitive Therapy (MBCT) is a group-based intervention with promise for addressing trauma-related psychopathology that may be of value for Black adults with limited socioeconomic resources because it may be more approachable for individuals with mental health stigma or hesitancy to engage with trauma memories. Trait mindfulness and emotion dysregulation (ED) are proposed mechanisms of action in MBCT, yet how these psychological factors shift as

[The role of the nucleus accumbens in psychiatric disorders].

The nucleus accumbens is the most inferior part of the striatum and is mainly connected to the limbic system. It is neurochemically and immunohistochemically divided into a shell laterally and a core medially. As a functionally central structure between amygdala, basal ganglia, mesolimbic dopaminergic regions, mediodorsal thalamus and prefrontal cortex, the nucleus accumbens appears to play a modulative role in the flow of the information from the amygdaloid complex to these regions. Dopamine is a major neurotransmitter of the nucleus accumbens and this nucleus has a modulative function to the

[The clinical meaning and academic significance of "endogenous depression" as an ideal type].

The assumption that a core group of depressive disorders is due to a discontinuous change in the function of the brain system, suggests that the symptoms of the core group of depressive disorders should be discerned from those of non-core depression. Core depression is thought to correspond to depression of an endogenous nature, which has recently been disregarded in diagnosing mood disorders. However, in diagnosing endogenous depression, we can identify its characteristic symptoms by referring to a traditional symptomatology. Therefore, the idea of Verstehen (Jaspers, K) becomes essential, bu

Understanding Behavioral Influences on Eating Disorders and App Engagement to Inform Eating Disorder App Development: Qualitative Online Focus Groups With Adults With Lived Experience.

BACKGROUND: Eating disorders (EDs) are severe mental health conditions driven by psychological, social, and emotional factors and have the highest mortality rate of any psychiatric disorder. Although evidence-based, theory-driven behavior change interventions are the gold standard, access to treatment remains limited. Digital interventions, such as apps, may offer accessible support for individuals with mild to moderate EDs; however, their development has rarely been guided by systematic behavior change frameworks. Consequently, many interventions inadequately target the mechanisms underlying

Beyond Audition: Psychosocial Benefits of Music Training for Children With Hearing Loss.

OBJECTIVES: Children with hearing loss tend to have poorer psychosocial and quality of life outcomes than their typical-hearing (TH) peers-particularly in the areas of peer relationships and school functioning. A small number of studies for TH children have suggested that group-based music activities are beneficial for prosocial outcomes and help develop a sense of belonging. While one might question whether perceptual limitations would impede satisfactory participation in musical activities, findings from a few studies have suggested that group music activities may have similar benefits for c

Frontiers in Neurotransmitter Probes: Innovations and Perspectives in Norepinephrine Detection Technology.

Norepinephrine (NE), the primary neurotransmitter of locus coeruleus projections, plays a crucial role in regulating arousal, emotion, memory, and stress responses. Its dysregulation is closely associated with various neurological disorders such as depression, Parkinson's disease, and epilepsy. However, conventional detection techniques such as microdialysis coupled with liquid chromatography are constrained by limited spatiotemporal resolution and inherent invasiveness, largely due to NE's low concentration, rapid metabolism, and complex distribution in vivo. These limitations make real-time,

Investigating the shared factor structure of the GAD-7 and PHQ-9 in non-clinical samples of young adults.

The Generalized Anxiety Disorder Scale-7 (GAD-7) and the Patient Health Questionnaire-9 (PHQ-9) are widely used to assess symptoms of generalized anxiety and depression among young adults. Although they have been validated separately, in recent years, they tend to be used conjointly. However, their scores are often highly correlated, raising doubts on the adequacy of using them together. Accounting for the shared and specific variance of these scales through bifactor-ESEM may provide significant advantages. To test this proposition, we compared hierarchical (bifactor) and non-hierarchical fact

Endothelial glycocalyx degradation, systemic inflammation and central nervous system injury: A comparative cohort study in adults with and without obesity.

Obesity is associated with chronic systemic inflammation, vascular endothelial dysfunction, and increased risk of central nervous system (CNS) injury, yet the mechanisms linking peripheral inflammation to brain damage remain incompletely understood. The endothelial glycocalyx, a critical regulator of vascular barrier integrity, may serve as a mechanistic interface between systemic inflammation and CNS impairment. In this prospective observational cohort study, 72 adults (48 with obesity and 24 normal-weight controls) underwent standardized clinical assessments, fasting blood sampling, emotiona

"Someone catching me when I'm falling": a qualitative study exploring satisfaction in romantic relationships where one partner has borderline personality disorder.

INTRODUCTION: Interpersonal difficulties are a core challenge experienced by people who have borderline personality disorder (BPD). Relationships where one person has BPD are often rated lower in satisfaction than others due to their tumultuous and unstable nature. Interpersonal difficulties not only cause distress but may also catalyse crises for people with BPD. The ability to sustain emotionally positive attachments is fundamental for recovery in BPD. The aim of this study was to understand how couples, where one partner has BPD, experience their intimate relationships and make sense of the

Evaluating the Effect of Brief Cognitive Behavioral Therapy Workshop on Psychological Distress, Coping Strategies, and Grit Among Primary School Students in Klang Valley, Malaysia.

Early life experiences play a crucial role in shaping children's emotional and psychological development, influencing their self-perception, interpersonal relationships, and ability to regulate stress. Primary school-aged children are particularly vulnerable, as they have limited control over their environment while being increasingly exposed to challenges such as family conflict, peer difficulties, and academic pressure. Without appropriate support, they may adopt maladaptive coping strategies in response to psychological distress. Although mental health issues among children are gaining reco

[Distance and closeness in the doctor-patient relationship among child and adolescent psychiatrists].

BACKGROUND: The therapeutic relationship is an important predictor of the effectiveness of psychotherapy. Within this relationship, the balance between distance and closeness plays a crucial role. However, within child psychiatry, little is known about the conceptual scope and clinical interpretation of these concepts. AIM: To investigate how child and adolescent psychiatrists, in their contact with minors, give meaning to distance and closeness in the therapeutic relationship and what considerations they make in clinical practice. METHOD: In this qualitative study, semi-structured interview

Wortmannin, a potent phosphatidylinositol 3-kinase inhibitor, suppresses methamphetamine-induced stereotypy and hyperlocomotion in mice.

Phosphatidylinositol 3-kinase (PI3K) (EC2.7.1.137) is an enzyme essential for a variety of biological processes, including inflammation and neuroplasticity. There is a close, positive relationship between these biological functions and the action of psychostimulant drugs such as cocaine and methamphetamine (METH). This suggests that the inhibition of PI3K might regulate METH-induced behavior such as hyperlocomotion and stereotyped behavior. To evaluate the effects of PI3K inhibition on METH-induced behavior, mice were treated with wortmannin, a potent PI3K inhibitor, followed by METH. Horizont

Psychological well-being of SLE patients: A comprehensive examination of stress, depression, anxiety and quality of life.

Systemic Lupus Erythematosus (SLE/Lupus) is a chronic autoimmune disease affecting various organs, and associated with challenges in emotion and mood regulation. Despite the increasing prevalence of SLE globally and in India, neuropsychological data remain underrepresented. This study investigates the psychological health and quality of life among Indian SLE patients using self-reported questionnaires on depression, generalized anxiety, trait anxiety, stress, and quality of life. Results indicate a high prevalence of stress, depression, and both generalized and trait anxiety among the SLE pati

Brain circuits that regulate social behavior.

Social interactions are essential for the survival of individuals and the reproduction of populations. Social stressors, such as social defeat and isolation, can lead to emotional disorders and cognitive impairments. Furthermore, dysfunctional social behaviors are hallmark symptoms of various neuropsychiatric disorders, including autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Consequently, understanding the neural circuit mechanisms underlying social behaviors has become a major focus in neuroscience. Social behaviors, which encompass a wide range of expressions and

Resting state connectivity patterns associated with trait anxiety in adolescence.

Anxiety symptoms occur more frequently during adolescence and early adulthood, increasing the risk of future anxiety disorders. Neuroscientific research on anxiety has primarily focused on adulthood, employing mostly univariate approaches, discounting large-scale alterations of the brain. Indeed adolescents with trait anxiety may display similar abnormalities shown by adults in brain regions ascribed to the default mode network, associated with self-referential thinking and rumination-related processes. The present study aims to explore resting-state connectivity patterns associated with trait
