Aerobic training effects of electrically induced lower extremity exercises in spinal cord injured people.

Eleven people with spinal cord injury (SCI) (C4-T6) participated in a program of functional electric stimulation (FES) of their paralyzed leg muscles using the REGYS I system. Individualized protocols consisted of an initial phase of weight lifting, an intermediate phase of ergometer pedalling against 0 Kilopond (kp) alternated with 1/8kp for six two-minute runs separated by two-minute rest periods, and a final phase of 36 sessions of continuous ergometer pedalling against variable resistance. A metabolic analyzer measured exercise stress test parameters before and after each phase while subje

Sex- and age-adjusted reference values for dynamic inspiratory constraints during incremental cycle ergometry.

Activity-related dyspnea in chronic lung disease is centrally related to dynamic (dyn) inspiratory constraints to tidal volume expansion. Lack of reference values for exertional inspiratory reserve (IR) has limited the yield of cardiopulmonary exercise testing in exposing the underpinnings of this disabling symptom. One hundred fifty apparently healthy subjects (82 males) aged 40-85 underwent incremental cycle ergometry. Based on exercise inspiratory capacity (ICdyn), we generated centile-based reference values for the following metrics of IR as a function of absolute ventilation: IRdyn1 ([1-(

Moderate-intensity aerobic exercise improves physical fitness in bethlem myopathy.

INTRODUCTION: Bethlem myopathy is caused by dysfunctional collagen VI assembly, leading to varying degrees of hyperlaxity, contractures and muscle weakness. Previous studies demonstrate that cardiovascular training is safe and beneficial in patients with myopathies. However, exercise exacerbates the dystrophic phenotype in collagen VI-knockout mice. METHODS: Six men with Bethlem myopathy were included (4 training; 2 controls). After training, 2 patients detrained. Patients performed 10 weeks of home-based, moderate-intensity exercise monitored by a pulse-watch. The primary outcome was change

Athlete's Heart: Diagnostic Challenges and Future Perspectives.

Distinguishing between adaptive and maladaptive cardiovascular response to exercise is crucial to prevent the unnecessary termination of an athlete's career and to minimize the risk of sudden death. This is a challenging task essentially due to the substantial phenotypic overlap between electrical and structural changes seen in the physiological athletic heart remodeling and pathological changes seen in inherited or acquired cardiomyopathies. Stress testing is an ideal tool to discriminate normal from abnormal cardiovascular response by unmasking subtle pathologic responses otherwise undetecta

Association between intensity and type of physical activity and lung function in patients with COPD: a population-based study.

INTRODUCTION: Aerobic exercise is a cornerstone of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) management; however, its association with lung function parameters has remained inconsistent across prior studies, and previous studies have been limited by examining physical activity (PA) as a single intensity dimension without distinguishing specific PA types. We therefore investigated the associations between PA intensity and type with lung function outcomes (FEV1, FVC, and PEF) in COPD patients and individuals with normal spirometry (FEV1/FVC ≥ 0.7 and FVC ≥ 80% of predicted), and formally test

The effectiveness and acceptability of face-to-face rehabilitation for patients with Long Covid who were not hospitalised with their acute infection: a mixed-methods study comprising a randomised controlled trial (RCT) with embedded qualitative component.

BACKGROUND: Long Covid is a term used to describe a multisystem condition that presents with a myriad of physical and psychological symptoms that continue or develop after acute COVID-19. Long Covid is a significant public health problem because of the nature of the illness, its negative impfact on everyday functioning, and the healthcare inequalities evident in access and experience, notably in terms of ethnicity and socioeconomic status. Evidence in patients hospitalised with their acute infection suggests exercise-based rehabilitation could be helpful to improve exercise tolerance, respirat

Assessment of Physical Fitness Following a 12-Week Physical Exercise Program Among Adults Attending Wellness Centers at the Primary Health Care Corporation, Qatar: A Retrospective Study.

Background Physical fitness (PF) is a critical determinant of health, influencing cardiorespiratory endurance, muscular strength, and overall metabolic function. In Qatar, sedentary lifestyles and physical inactivity are prevalent, contributing to increasing rates of obesity and non-communicable diseases. Structured physical exercise programs, integrated into community wellness centers, offer a practical intervention to improve PF, yet their real-world effectiveness remains under-evaluated in the local context. Methods This retrospective study analyzed data from 739 adults who completed a 12-w

Comparing the efficacy of a multi-dimensional breast cancer rehabilitation programme versus a home-based exercise programme during adjuvant cancer treatment.

BACKGROUND: Breast cancer is the most common female malignancy worldwide and a major cause of morbidity and mortality. Exercise during adjuvant treatment improves function and relieves symptoms in breast cancer survivors. However, it is unclear if an unsupervised exercise programme may be as effective as a supervised multimodal group. We investigated the feasibility and efficacy of a centre-based multidimensional rehabilitation (MDR) programme for breast cancer survivors undergoing adjuvant treatment and compared it to an unsupervised home-based exercise (HE) programme. METHODS: Participants

Effects of short-term dietary nitrate supplementation on exercise and coronary blood flow responses in patients with peripheral artery disease.

BACKGROUND: Peripheral arterial disease (PAD) is a prevalent vascular disorder characterized by atherosclerotic occlusion of peripheral arteries, resulting in reduced blood flow to the lower extremities and poor walking ability. Older patients with PAD are also at a markedly increased risk of cardiovascular events, including myocardial infarction. Recent evidence indicates that inorganic nitrate supplementation, which is abundant in certain vegetables, augments nitric oxide (NO) bioavailability and may have beneficial effects on walking, blood pressure, and vascular function in patients with P

Physical Activity Level, Barriers, and Facilitators for Exercise Engagement for Chronic Community-Dwelling Stroke Survivors in Low-Income Settings: A Cross-Sectional Study in Benin.

After a stroke incident, physical inactivity is common. People with stroke may perceive several barriers to performing physical activity (PA). This study aimed to document the PA level and understand the barriers and facilitators to engaging in PA for community-dwelling stroke survivors in Benin, a lower middle-income country. A cross-sectional study was conducted in three hospitals in Benin. Levels of PA were recorded by means of the Benin version of the International Physical Activity Questionnaire long form (IPAQ-LF-Benin), which is validated for stroke survivors in Benin. The perceived exe

The effect of supine cycling and progressive lower body negative pressure on cerebral blood velocity responses.

Moderate-intensity aerobic exercise increases cerebral blood velocity (CBv) primarily due to hyperpnea-induced vasodilation; however, the integrative control of cerebral blood flow (CBF) allows other factors to contribute to the vasodilation. Although lower body negative pressure (LBNP) can reduce CBv, the exact LBNP intensity required to blunt the aforementioned exercise-induced CBv response is unknown. This could hold utility for concussion recovery, allowing individuals to exercise at higher intensities without symptom exacerbation. Thirty-two healthy adults (age: 20-33 yr; 19 females/13 ma

Tailored exercise management (TEMPO) versus usual care for people aged 80 years or older with hip/knee osteoarthritis: study protocol for a feasibility randomised controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Exercise is recommended for all people with osteoarthritis. However, these recommendations are based on randomised clinical trials including people with an average age between 60 and 70 years, and these findings cannot reliably be generalised to people aged 80 years or older. Rapid loss of muscle occurs after 70 years of age, and older people are more likely to also have other health conditions that contribute to difficulties with daily activities and impact on their response to exercise. To improve care for people aged 80 or older with osteoarthritis, it is thought that a tailored

Effectiveness of home-based telerehabilitation programs on functional capacity and cardiac function in elderly heart failure patients: A prospective longitudinal study.

Decreased functional capacity and reduced cardiac function were the main symptoms in patients with heart failure (HF) and the incidence increases with advanced age. The guidelines recommend that exercise training should be considered for medically stable HF outpatients. Studies have confirmed that exercise can improve functional capacity, prognosis, and reduced hospitalization rates; however, very few studies have investigated the elderly. It is not clear whether exercise could be feasible in elderly HF. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of the 6-month heart failure post-acute c

Effects of high-intensity interval training on microvascular glycocalyx and associated microRNAs.

High-intensity interval training (HIIT) has been proposed to exert vasculoprotective effects. This study aimed to evaluate whether HIIT affects the microvasculature, including the endothelial glycocalyx barrier, and to identify associated microRNAs (miRNAs). Fifty healthy participants (23.1 ± 3.0 yr) performed a 4-wk 4 × 30-s all-out running HIIT. Sidestream dark-field imaging was performed at baseline and follow-up to detect changes of the sublingual microvasculature including the endothelial glycocalyx. Exercise parameters were determined by continuous running field test and documentation of
