Aberrant attentional bias to sad faces in depression and the role of stressful life events: Evidence from an eye-tracking paradigm.

Attentional biases are thought to be involved in the etiopathogenesis of depressive disorders. Recent studies indicate eye-tracking techniques could overcome methodological issues of traditional reaction time bias measures and be used to reliably quantify biases in attention. In the current study, 50 participants with a current depressive disorder and 31 never-depressed individuals performed a free-viewing eye-tracking paradigm with two counterbalanced blocks; one contained four-by-four arrays of happy and neutral faces, the other arrays of sad and neutral faces. Average dwell-times were analy

SARS-CoV-2 will constantly sweep its tracks: a vaccine containing CpG motifs in 'lasso' for the multi-faced virus.

During the current COVID-19 pandemic, the global ratio between the dead and the survivors is approximately 1 to 10, which has put humanity on high alert and provided strong motivation for the intensive search for vaccines and drugs. It is already clear that if we follow the most likely scenario, which is similar to that used to create seasonal influenza vaccines, then we will need to develop improved vaccine formulas every year to control the spread of the new, highly mutable coronavirus SARS-CoV-2. In this article, using well-known RNA viruses (HIV, influenza viruses, HCV) as examples, we con

To click or not to click - The importance of understanding the layers of the forehead when injecting neuromodulators - A clinical, prospective, interventional, split-face study.

BACKGROUND: Differences in the effectiveness of neuromodulator treatments for horizontal forehead lines dependent on depth of product administration have been described. However, knowledge in respect to the fascial anatomy of the forehead still remains elusive. AIMS: To relate the fascial anatomy of the forehead to the effectiveness of neuromodulator treatments by conducting a clinical, prospective, interventional split-face study in which injections for the treatment of horizontal forehead lines are performed differently between facial sides. METHODS: This study included a total of n = 14 p

The influence of maternal anxiety and depression symptoms on fNIRS brain responses to emotional faces in 5- and 7-month-old infants.

Greater relative right (versus left) frontal cortical activation to emotional faces as measured with alpha power in the electroencephalogram (EEG), has been considered a promising neural marker of increased vulnerability to psychopathology and emotional disorders. We set out to explore multichannel fNIRS as a tool to investigate infants' frontal asymmetry responses (hypothesizing greater right versus left frontal cortex activation) to emotional faces as influenced by maternal anxiety and depression symptoms during the postnatal period. We also explored activation differences in fronto-temporal

Superficial Basal Cell Carcinoma of the Face Successfully Treated with Ingenol Mebutate 0.05% Gel: Case Report and a Review of the Literature.

A 64 year-old Caucasian male patient with a long history of ultraviolet light exposure and multiple actinic keratoses presented with a large, erythematous, and scaly plaque on his forehead. Biopsies revealed superficial basal cell carcinoma (sBCC). Because the patient wanted the shortest possible topical regimen, his sBCC was treated with two overnight ingenol mebutate (IM) 0.05% gel applications. He tolerated the local skin reaction (LSR) well, and at approximately six weeks post-treatment, biopsies showed no evidence of sBCC. The patient was happy with the cosmetic outcome and has remained f

Effectiveness of reverse twin block with lip pads-RME and face mask with RME in the early treatment of class III malocclusion.

BACKGROUND: The use of face mask for early treatment of class III malocclusion has proven to be successful, but its compliance and related dental side effects have always been a problem. To overcome this, a new approach has been suggested. The purpose of the present study was to compare the effectiveness of reverse twin block with lip pads and fixed rapid maxillary expansion (RTBLP-RME) appliance and face mask with RME (FM-RME) appliance for early treatment of class III malocclusion. METHODS: The sample consisted of 39 patients with class III malocclusion in the age group of 6-12 years (mean

Spontaneous Epidural Hematoma of the Cervical Spine Following Thrombolysis in a Patient with STEMI-Two Medical Specialties Facing a Rare Dilemma.

Spontaneous spinal epidural hematoma (SSEH) is a rare, albeit well-documented complication following thrombolysis treatment in ST elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI). A SSEH usually manifests with cervical pain and neurologic deficits and may require surgical intervention. In this case report, we present the first reported SSEH to occur following thrombolysis with reteplase. In this case, the SSEH manifested with cervical pain shortly after the patient emerged from his rescue percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI). Although magnetic resonance imaging reported spinal cord compression, the

The Efficacy of Pulsed Dye Laser Pretreated With or Without Local Anesthetic on Patients Presenting With Erythema of Face, Neck, Chest, and Extremities.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Erythema is one of the most common cosmetic concerns and usually responds well to pulsed dye laser (PDL) treatment. As this laser can cause significant discomfort, topical anesthesia is sometimes offered. However, it is still uncertain whether topical anesthetics can affect the outcome of the laser therapy. We performed a retrospective single site study to compare the efficacy of PDL for the treatment of erythema in patients with and without pretreatment with topical anesthetic. STUDY DESIGN/MATERIALS AND METHODS: A chart review was performed and patients who presen

"Looks familiar, but I do not know who she is": The role of the anterior right temporal lobe in famous face recognition.

Processing a famous face involves a cascade of steps including detecting the presence of a face, recognizing it as familiar, accessing semantic/biographical information about the person, and finally, if required, production of the proper name. Decades of neuropsychological and neuroimaging studies have identified a network of occipital and temporal brain regions ostensibly comprising the 'core' system for face processing. Recent research has also begun to elucidate upon an 'extended' network, including anterior temporal and frontal regions. However, there is disagreement about which brain area

A Randomized, Double-Blind, Placebo-Controlled, Split-Face Study of the Efficacy of Topical Epidermal Growth Factor for the Treatment of Melasma.

INTRODUCTION: Melasma is a condition in which patients develop symmetric, reticulated, hyperpigmented macules and patches on the face which is thought to be the result of ultraviolet (UV) exposure and hormonal influences, although the pathogenesis is not completely understood. The topical application of epidermal growth factor has been used as a whitening agent, moisturizer, and an aid for wound healing. In this study, we explore the efficacy of topical EGF in the treatment of melasma. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This was a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled, split-face study to determin

Neurophysiological correlates of attentional bias for emotional faces in socially anxious individuals - Evidence from a visual search task and N2pc.

Visual search paradigms have provided evidence for the enhanced capture of attention by threatening faces. Especially in social anxiety, hypervigilance for threatening faces has been found repeatedly across behavioral paradigms, whose reliability however have been questioned recently. In this EEG study, we sought to determine whether the detection of threat (angry faces) is specifically enhanced in individuals with high (HSA) compared to low social anxiety (LSA). In a visual search paradigm, the N2pc component of the event-related brain potential was measured as an electrophysiological indicat

Granulomatous Rosacea Versus Lupus Miliaris Disseminatus Faciei-2 Faces of Facial Granulomatous Disorder: A Clinicohistological and Molecular Study.

Granulomatous rosacea (GR) and lupus miliaris disseminatus faciei (LMDF) are 2 forms of facial granulomatous diseases. Although they show some morphological overlap, they have distinct clinical presentation. This study was performed to demonstrate the clinical and histological features of GR and LMDF and to establish their relationship to tuberculous etiology by molecular technique. All the cases of GR (n = 20) and LMDF (n = 10) diagnosed on skin biopsy over the past 6 years were reviewed along with their clinical detail. Polymerase chain reaction (PCR) was performed using primers specific for
