Surgical management of endometrial cancer in patient with musculocontractural Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome harboring pathogenic variants in CHST14 (mcEDS-CHST14): A case report.

INTRODUCTION: Musculocontractural Ehlers-Danlos syndrome (mcEDS) is a rare autosomal recessive connective tissue disorder caused by systemic depletion of dermatan sulfate. Symptoms characteristic of mcEDS include multiple contractures, fragile skin with subcutaneous bleeding, and hypermobile joints, which suggest difficulty in perioperative management. However, safe surgical techniques and perioperative management of this disorder remain unknown because of its rarity. We report a patient with mcEDS who developed endometrial cancer and underwent surgery, with emphasis on perioperative managemen

Does a shorter residual first metatarsal length after first ray amputation in diabetic patients leads to poorer outcomes - A risk factor study.

BACKGROUND: The first ray plays a vital role in the normal function of the foot and the gait cycle where in its absence can lead to abnormal changes in weight distribution to the residual first metatarsal stump and lesser metatarsals with predisposition to developing lesser toe deformities reulcerations and reamputations particularly in diabetic patients. This study aims to characterise the outcomes after first ray amputation and its associated risk factors with focus on the impact of residual first metatarsal length. METHODS: All diabetic patients with first ray amputations from January 2012

Effects of custom insoles for symptomatic hallux valgus: protocol for a sham-controlled randomised trial.

INTRODUCTION: Hallux valgus (HV) is one of the most prevalent forefoot deformities, and its frequency increases with age, reaching nearly 23% in adulthood (females are usually more affected). Studies on customised insoles and orthoses for HV showed inconclusive results. There is no consensus in literature regarding the ideal insole or length of use for pain relief or functional improvement in individuals with HV. This study will assess the effects of a customised insole with retrocapital bar associated with an infracapital bar of the first metatarsal on pain and function of individuals with sy

An electroceutical approach enhances myelination via upregulation of lipid biosynthesis in the dorsal root ganglion.

As the myelin sheath is crucial for neuronal saltatory conduction, loss of myelin in the peripheral nervous system (PNS) leads to demyelinating neuropathies causing muscular atrophy, numbness, foot deformities and paralysis. Unfortunately, few interventions are available for such neuropathies, because previous pharmaceuticals have shown severe side effects and failed in clinical trials. Therefore, exploring new strategies to enhance PNS myelination is critical to provide solution for such intractable diseases. This study aimed to investigate the effectiveness of electrical stimulation (ES) to

Enhancement of evaluating flatfoot on a weight-bearing lateral radiograph of the foot with U-Net based semantic segmentation on the long axis of tarsal and metatarsal bones in an active learning manner.

Robust labeling for semantic segmentation in radiographs is labor-intensive. No study has evaluated flatfoot-related deformities using semantic segmentation with U-Net on weight-bearing lateral radiographs. Here, we evaluated the robustness, accuracy enhancement, and efficiency of automated measurements for flatfoot-related angles using semantic segmentation in an active learning manner. A total of 300 consecutive weight-bearing lateral radiographs of the foot were acquired. The first 100 radiographs were used as the test set, and the following 200 radiographs were used as the training and val

Review of Calcaneal Osteotomies Fixed With a Calcaneal Slide Plate.

BACKGROUND: The calcaneal slide osteotomy is a common procedure used for the surgical correction of heel varus and valgus deformities. A variety of fixation methods exist including screws and plates. The literature shows a high rate of hardware prominence with screws leading to subsequent removal of hardware. Few studies have examined the use of plates for fixation of a calcaneal osteotomy. The purpose of this study was to assess outcomes following fixation of a calcaneal osteotomy with a calcaneal slide plate. METHODS: This is a retrospective consecutive case series of all patients who under

Selective ultrasound screening for developmental hip dysplasia: effect on management and late detected cases. A prospective survey during 1991-2006.

BACKGROUND: Early treatment is considered essential for developmental dysplasia of the hip (DDH), but the choice of screening strategy is debated. OBJECTIVE: We evaluated the effect of a selective ultrasound (US) screening programme. MATERIALS AND METHODS: All infants born in a defined region during 1991-2006 with increased risk of developmental dysplasia of the hip, i.e. clinical hip instability, breech presentation, congenital foot deformities or a family history of DDH, underwent US screening at age 1-3 days. Severe sonographic dysplasia and dislocatable/dislocated hips were treated with

Treatment of posttraumatic bone defects by the induced membrane technique.

INTRODUCTION: Among bone reconstruction techniques, the induced membrane technique, proposed in 1986 by Masquelet, has rarely been studied or evaluated in the surgical literature until recently. The 2010 French Society of Orthopaedic Surgery and Traumatology (SoFCOT) Annual Convention symposium was the occasion to evaluate a large cases series having used this technique. PATIENTS AND METHODS: This retrospective study included 84 posttraumatic diaphyseal long bone reconstructions using the induced membrane technique (1988-2009). The series included 79 men and five women (mean age 32-year-old).

Sacsinopathies: sacsin-related ataxia.

Autosomal recessive spastic ataxia of Charlevoix-Saguenay (ARSACS) was originally found among inhabitants of the Charlevoix-Saguenay region of northeastern Quebec in Canada. This disease is a neurodegenerative disorder characterized by early-onset spastic ataxia, dysarthria, nystagmus, distal muscle wasting, finger and foot deformities, and retinal hypermyelination. The principal neuropathology comprises atrophy of the upper vermis and the loss of Purkinje cells in the cerebellum. The SACS gene was originally reported to consist of a single gigantic exon spanning 12.8 kb with an 11.5-kb open r

Homozygous defects in LMNA, encoding lamin A/C nuclear-envelope proteins, cause autosomal recessive axonal neuropathy in human (Charcot-Marie-Tooth disorder type 2) and mouse.

The Charcot-Marie-Tooth (CMT) disorders comprise a group of clinically and genetically heterogeneous hereditary motor and sensory neuropathies, which are mainly characterized by muscle weakness and wasting, foot deformities, and electrophysiological, as well as histological, changes. A subtype, CMT2, is defined by a slight or absent reduction of nerve-conduction velocities together with the loss of large myelinated fibers and axonal degeneration. CMT2 phenotypes are also characterized by a large genetic heterogeneity, although only two genes---NF-L and KIF1Bbeta---have been identified to date.

The hemi 3 syndrome. Hemihypertrophy, hemihypaesthesia, hemiareflexia and scoliosis.

Three unrelated girls presented with a developmental syndrome of hypertrophy involving half or a quadrant of the body and not involving the face. The appearance was one of inappropriately large size of the affected side rather than contralateral atrophy. On the larger side, there was hypertrophy of muscle and increased power as well as an increase in diameter, but not in length, of long bones. There was areflexia and decreased pain and temperature sensation on that side. The patients also had progressive scoliosis and foot deformities on the enlarged side. One patient had a lumbar myelomeningo

Cadaveric Simulation of Flatfoot and Surgical Corrective Techniques: The Evans Osteotomy vs the Z-Osteotomy.

BACKGROUND: Progressive collapsing flatfoot deformity (PCFD) describes the pathologic form of a flatfoot (pes planus). Pes planus is often treated with lateral column-lengthening (LCL) procedures such as the Evans LCL. The Z-osteotomy has been explored as an alternative to the Evans LCL. We aim to compare bone position using radiographs and dynamic movement using a robotic gait simulator (RGS). METHODS: Flatfoot was produced in cadaveric specimens by attenuating medial arch supporting ligaments and cyclically loading through the tibia. Clinical diagnostic measures from radiographs were used t
