Conceptual Combination in the LATL With and Without Syntactic Composition.

The relationship among syntactic, semantic, and conceptual processes in language comprehension is a central question to the neurobiology of language. Several studies have suggested that conceptual combination in particular can be localized to the left anterior temporal lobe (LATL), while syntactic processes are more often associated with the posterior temporal lobe or inferior frontal gyrus. However, LATL activity can also correlate with syntactic computations, particularly in narrative comprehension. Here we investigated the degree to which LATL conceptual combination is dependent on syntax,

Alcohol Withdrawal and the Associated Mood Disorders-A Review.

Recreational use of alcohol is a social norm in many communities worldwide. Alcohol use in moderation brings pleasure and may protect the cardiovascular system. However, excessive alcohol consumption or alcohol abuse are detrimental to one's health. Three million deaths due to excessive alcohol consumption were reported by the World Health Organization. Emerging evidence also revealed the danger of moderate consumption, which includes the increased risk to cancer. Alcohol abuse and periods of withdrawal have been linked to depression and anxiety. Here, we present the effects of alcohol consump

Identifying and validating subtypes of Parkinson's disease based on multimodal MRI data via hierarchical clustering analysis.

OBJECTIVE: We wished to explore Parkinson's disease (PD) subtypes by clustering analysis based on the multimodal magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) indices amplitude of low-frequency fluctuation (ALFF) and gray matter volume (GMV). Then, we analyzed the differences between PD subtypes. METHODS: Eighty-six PD patients and 44 healthy controls (HCs) were recruited. We extracted ALFF and GMV according to the Anatomical Automatic Labeling (AAL) partition using Data Processing and Analysis for Brain Imaging (DPABI) software. The Ward linkage method was used for hierarchical clustering analysis. DPABI

Single-cell mass cytometry of microglia in major depressive disorder reveals a non-inflammatory phenotype with increased homeostatic marker expression.

Stress-induced disturbances of brain homeostasis and neuroinflammation have been implicated in the pathophysiology of mood disorders. In major depressive disorder (MDD), elevated levels of proinflammatory cytokines and chemokines can be found in peripheral blood, but very little is known about the changes that occur directly in the brain. Microglia are the primary immune effector cells of the central nervous system and exquisitely sensitive to changes in the brain microenvironment. Here, we performed the first single-cell analysis of microglia from four different post-mortem brain regions (fro

Cardiovascular symptoms and longitudinal declines in processing speed differentially predict cerebral white matter lesions in older adults.

It is well established that cerebral white matter lesions (WML), present in the majority of older adults, are associated with cardiovascular and cerebrovascular diseases and also with cognitive decline. However, much less is known about how WML are related to other important individual characteristics and about the generality vs. brain region-specificity of WML. In a longitudinal study of 112 community-dwelling adults (age 50-71 years at study entry), we used a machine learning approach to evaluate the relative strength of 52 variables in association with WML burden. Variables included socio-d

Simultaneous cerebrospinal fluid and hematologic metastases in a high-grade ependymoma.

BACKGROUND: Ependymomas are relatively uncommon tumors that constitute about 7% of all primary intracranial neoplasms. Among these, high-grade ependymomas are locally aggressive and recur most commonly at the primary site following resection. Ependymomas are also known to be the one glial neoplasm that tends to frequently metastasize inside and outside the central nervous system (CNS) that complicates workup and management. Metastasis due to surgical manipulation is common and neurosurgeons should be well-versed in the most effective methods to remove these tumors in order to avoid such metast

Prognosis of Hippocampal Function after Sub-lethal Irradiation Brain Injury in Patients with Nasopharyngeal Carcinoma.

This work emphasizes the value of assessing hippocampal function by making a timely MRI-based prognosis following a minor dose of hippocampal irradiation after nasopharyngeal carcinomas (NPC) radiotherapy. A quasi-experiment with case-control design and functional assessments (e.g., neuroimaging analysis with fMRI) was conducted to assess hippocampal function after radiotherapy. We delivered 70 Gy of irradiation to nasopharyngeal carcinomas by 6MV helical radiotherapy and collected data from twenty NPC patients and 24 healthy age-matched subjects. Inevitably, hippocampi also received an averag

Factors influencing neurocognitive function in patients with neuroepithelial tumors.

Though cognitive function is proven to be an independent predictor of survival in patients with intrinsic brain tumors, cognitive functions are still rarely considered. Aim of this study was to assess neurocognitive function and to identify risk factors for neurocognitive deficits. 103 patients with primary neuroepithelial tumors who received tumor resections or biopsies were included in this prospective study. The following data was acquired: mini-mental state examination, preoperative tumor volume, WHO grade, tumor entity and location, and the Karnofsky performance status scale. Furthermore,

Neural correlates of response inhibition in current and former smokers.

Loss of behavioral control is a hallmark of addiction. Individual differences in basic cognitive processes such as response inhibition may be important for interrupting automatic behaviors associated with smoking and supporting prolonged abstinence. To examine how response inhibition and error monitoring processes differ as a function of smoking status, current smokers, former smokers and never smokers (N=126) completed a simple Go/No-Go task while undergoing functional magnetic resonance imaging. All groups performed similarly on the task and similarly engaged the inferior frontal gyrus and d

[A case of recurrent optic neuritis associated with cerebral and spinal cord lesions and autoantibodies against myelin oligodendrocyte glycoprotein relapsed after fingolimod therapy].

A previously healthy 16-year-old girl developed sudden eye pain and visual loss in her right eye. On day 7 from onset her right visual acuity had decreased to light perception, and she underwent 5 courses of intravenous methylprednisolone therapy (IVMP, 1 g/day for 3 consecutive days per week). Her eye pain and her visual acuity had improved immediately. Eleven months later, follow-up MRI revealed three T2-hyperintense plaques involving subcortical white matter in the left occipital lobe, right frontal lobe, right thalamus, and thoracic spinal cord. We suspected the diagnosis as multiple scler

Magnetic Resonance Spectroscopy Study of Amnestic Mild Cognitive Impairment and Vascular Cognitive Impairment With No Dementia.

Amnestic mild cognitive impairment (aMCI) and vascular cognitive impairment with no dementia (VCIND) are highly predictive of Alzheimer's disease and vascular dementia. In this study, a 2-dimensional magnetic resonance spectroscopy was performed in 25 patients with aMCI, 28 patients with VCIND, and 32 normal controls (NCs). The concentrations of N-acetyl aspartate (NAA), choline (Cho), myoinositol (MI), and creatine (Cr) were measured, and their ratios were calculated. The patients with aMCI displayed significantly lower NAA/MI bilaterally in the posterior cingulate gyrus (PCG) and white matte

Mapping repetition suppression of the P50 evoked response to the human cerebral cortex.

OBJECTIVE: The cerebral network subserving repetition suppression (RS) of the P50 auditory evoked response as observed using paired-identical-stimulus (S1-S2) paradigms is not well-described. METHODS: We analyzed S1-S2 data from electrodes placed on the cortices of 64 epilepsy patients. We identified regions with maximal amplitude responses to S1 (i.e., stimulus registration), regions with maximal suppression of responses to S2 relative to S1 (i.e., RS), and regions with no or minimal RS 30-80 ms post stimulation. RESULTS: Several temporal, parietal and cingulate area regions were shown to h

Electroconvulsive therapy-responsive catatonia in a medically complicated patient.

BACKGROUND: Profoundly depressed states of awareness classified as either catatonia or akinetic mutism have been reported in patients with various general medical conditions including encephalitis, frontal lobe tumors, or paraneoplastic limbic encephalitis. Catatonic features are often difficult to apprise in this context. This can result in electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) discontinuation, although it remains the most effective treatment of catatonia. CASE REPORT: We describe the case of a patient with a history of unresectable right retroorbital squamous cell carcinoma, status poststereotact

[A case of chronic myelogenous leukemia presenting multiple extramedullary tumors localized in cranial dura].

A 64-year-old woman had been given a diagnosis of Ph-positive chronic myelogenous leukemia (Ph+ CML) in October 1992 and accordingly treated with interferon-alpha busulfan, and hydroxyurea. She was admitted to our hospital with a one-day history of consciousness disturbance on May 30, 1993. Two weeks before admission, she had received chemotherapy consisting of vincristine and predonisolone because of progressive thrombocytopenia, basophilia, and leukocytosis accompanied by a heightened degree of cell immaturity in peripheral blood and bone marrow. Cranial computerized tomography on admission

Evidence against the existence of a temporal lobe epilepsy personality syndrome.

The existence and specificity of a characteristic behavioral syndrome among patients with temporal lobe epilepsy (TLE) remains controversial. The behavioral pattern of many epilepsy patients differs from that of age-, sex-, and socioeconomic-matched control subjects. Patients with TLE and other forms of epilepsy can experience changes in cognitive function, personality, affect, and drive-related behavior (e.g., libido, aggression). Biologic factors (e.g., underlying brain pathology, epileptogenic process, localization and lateralization, recurrent seizures, family history), antiepileptic drugs

Role of the right temporal lobe in visual-cue learning during repeated pattern discriminations.

The ability to acquire visual cues for discriminating between two targets against a background of visually similar items was examined in 64 patients with unilateral temporal- or frontal-lobe excisions and 20 normal control subjects. The subjects were tested on two versions (letters and abstract designs) of a visual cue-learning task that was an adaptation and extension of RABBITT's (Am. J. Psychol. 80, 1-13, 1967) visual-search paradigm. For both versions, the material consisted of two packs of cards, each containing a different set of background letters or designs. Early attentional processing and cortical remapping strategies of tactile stimuli in adults with an early and late-onset visual impairment: A cross-sectional study.

Neuroplastic changes appear in people with visual impairment (VI) and they show greater tactile abilities. Improvements in performance could be associated with the development of enhanced early attentional processes based on neuroplasticity. Currently, the various early attentional and cortical remapping strategies that are utilized by people with early (EB) and late-onset blindness (LB) remain unclear. Thus, more research is required to develop effective rehabilitation programs and substitution devices. Our objective was to explore the differences in spatial tactile brain processing in adults

Loss with ageing but preservation of frontal cortical capillary pericytes in post-stroke dementia, vascular dementia and Alzheimer's disease.

Cerebral pericytes are an integral component of the neurovascular unit, which governs the blood-brain barrier. There is paucity of knowledge on cortical pericytes across different dementias. We quantified cortical pericytes in capillaries in 124 post-mortem brains from subjects with post-stroke dementia (PSD), vascular dementia (VaD), Alzheimer's disease (AD) and AD-VaD (Mixed) and, post-stroke non-demented (PSND) stroke survivors as well as normal ageing controls. Collagen 4 (COL4)-positive nucleated pericyte soma were identified as protrusions on capillaries of the frontal cortex. The COL4-p
