Clinical Guidelines for the Surgical/Orthodontic Management of Impacted Maxillary Central Incisors Based on a Decision Tree.

Maxillary central incisors are critical to occlusal function, smile esthetics, and even one's self-image. Furthermore, their impaction at an early age could have harmful psychological consequences on the individual. Maxillary central incisors can be impacted due to early dentoalveolar trauma to the upper anterior region that displaces the incisor in formation and, in rare instances, tooth germs are deformed. The aftermath of trauma during primary dentition is seen later during mixed dentition. Other causes are either an impediment in the eruption pathway of the maxillary central incisor due to

Clinical characteristics and genotype-phenotype correlation analysis of familial Alzheimer's disease patients with pathogenic/likely pathogenic amyloid protein precursor mutations.

Alzheimer's disease (AD) is a progressive neurodegenerative disease associated with aging, environmental, and genetic factors. Amyloid protein precursor (APP) is a known pathogenic gene for familial Alzheimer's disease (FAD), and now more than 70 APP mutations have been reported, but the genotype-phenotype correlation remains unclear. In this study, we collected clinical data from patients carrying APP mutations defined as pathogenic/likely pathogenic according to the American college of medical genetics and genomics (ACMG) guidelines. Then, we reanalyzed the clinical characteristics and ident

Exploring the knowledge base of trauma and trauma informed care of staff working in community residential accommodation for adults with an intellectual disability.

BACKGROUND: Taking a trauma informed care approach has demonstrated positive outcomes for services for people in the general population. Given the increased vulnerability to psychological trauma for adults with an intellectual disability, this study explores what residential staff know about trauma and trauma informed care. METHODS: Thirty-two staffs representing three staff groups: direct care staff; managers; and specialist practitioners, were interviewed using semi-structured interviews, which were analysed following a structured framework. FINDINGS: Each staff group held different perspe

Couple Conflict Behavior: Disentangling Associations With Relationship Dissatisfaction and Intimate Partner Violence.

This study investigates associations between (a) relationship satisfaction and intimate partner violence (IPV: psychological, physical, and sexual) and (b) observed couples communication behavior. Mixed-sex couples (N=291) were recruited via random digit dialing. Partners completed the Quality of Marriage Index (Norton, 1983), the Revised Conflict Tactics Scale (Straus et al., 1996), and one female-initiated and one male-initiated 10-min conflict conversations. Discussions were coded with Rapid Marital Interaction Coding System, 2nd Generation (Heyman et al., 2015). As hypothesized, lower sati

The Mental Effect of Music on the Personal State in Terms of Depressive Personality Disorders.

The use of music as a basis for overcoming depressive personality disorders is possible only if the individual is ready for this therapy. Music therapy affects, first of all, the very structure of personality, its dynamic filling with current social and political tendencies, and allows to highlight problem areas, which are often viewed as complex in the structure of other psychological problems. The purpose of the current study was the determination and justification of the corresponding criteria in relation to this, as well as the methodology for diagnosing the studied phenomenon. Relationship between Everyday Discrimination and Substance Use among Adolescents in Northern Chile.

Substance use is a public health problem that affects the normal physical, neurological, and psychological development of adolescents. Apparently, discrimination is an important variable for explaining the initiation and continued use of alcohol and marijuana. Since most research focused on discrimination based on factors, such as race, ethnicity, sexual orientation, or gender faced by minority groups, studies on discrimination faced by the general population remain scarce. This cross-sectional study described the relationship between everyday discrimination and alcohol and marijuana use-relat

What Can Affect Competition Anxiety in Athletes? The Role of Self-Compassion and Repetitive Negative Thinking.

Identifying the correlates of competition anxiety is fundamental to athletes' well-being and performance. Self-compassion is gaining attention in sport psychology because of its associations with positive outcomes, while repetitive negative thinking (i.e. worry and rumination) is associated with negative conditions, such as anxiety. Building on previous evidence in the general population of associations between self-compassion, repetitive negative thinking, and trait anxiety, we investigated these relations in athletes of different sports. A total of 263 athletes (Mage = 23.72, SD = 6.97, 141

Physiological, psychosocial, and environmental factors in depression among autistic girls.

Autism Spectrum Disorder and depression are often co-occurring in young people. However, despite the association between these two disorders, and the fact that females have a higher prevalence of depression than males in the general population, there is little reported evidence regarding the correlates of depression in young autistic females. Several physiological (age, menarche, HPA-axis responses), psychological (social anxiety), and environmental or genetic (mothers' depression) factors were tested for their contribution to depression severity in a sample of 53 autistic girls aged 6 yr to 1

An Evidence-Based Strategic Approach to Prevention and Treatment of Dry Eye Disease, a Modern Global Epidemic.

Dry eye disease (DED) is an emerging health concern causing significant visual, psychological, social, and economic impact globally. In contrast to visual rehabilitation undertaken at late stages of DED, measures instituted to prevent its onset, establishment, or progression can alter its natural course and effectively bring down the associated morbidity. This review attempts to present the available literature on preventive strategies of DED at one place, including strategies for risk assessment and mitigation, targeting a wide range of population. A literature search was conducted using PubM

Targeting body image in eating disorders.

Eating disorders, such as anorexia nervosa, are challenging to treat successfully and have a very high relapse rate. Body image disturbance (BID) is a core component of these eating disorders. It is a predictor of onset, treatment outcome and future relapse. However, recent studies suggest that BID can be improved by an adaptation of cognitive bias training. This does not target the accuracy of body size judgements, but instead focuses on how a body of a particular size is categorized by a patient. This recalibration of the categorical boundary at which bodies are judged as overweight, which c

An overview of adapalene and benzoyl peroxide once-daily topical gel as a therapeutic option for acne.

INTRODUCTION: Acne vulgaris is the most common skin condition worldwide, and it is associated with substantial psychological comorbidity. Topical therapies - including retinoids, antibiotics, and benzoyl peroxide - are the cornerstones of treatment for patients with acne. The main barriers to care in the treatment of acne are poor adherence to therapy and lack of tolerability. AREAS COVERED: Herein, the authors review the safety and efficacy of adapalene/benzoyl peroxide combination gel (0.1%/2.5% and 0.3%/2.5%), as well as its specific mechanisms of action that target acne vulgaris. Surgical treatment and management of cutaneous squamous cell carcinoma in patients with dystrophic epidermolysis bullosa - a case report.

Epidermolysis bullosa (EB) is a rare inherited disease which is characterized by blisters on the skin and mucous membranes. Some forms of EB are associated with a risk of squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) development, which, unlike in the general population, is formed at a young age. SCC is the most common cause of death in patients with a dystrophic form. It is necessary to examine chronic and non-healing wounds for an increased risk of SCC. The basic treatment consists of surgical excision of the tumor site with a wide margin into healthy tissue. The surgical wound can be healed by secondary int

[Advances in the research of clinical treatment of hyperpigmentation and hypopigmentation after burns].

Hyperpigmentation and hypopigmentation are complications commonly seen in burn patients after wound healing, which may have seriously adverse impact on the appearances of the patients. The change of skin color in the exposed areas such as the face and hands may cause great psychological burden on the patients. While the occurrence and development mechanisms of hyperpigmentation and hypopigmentation post burns are unclear, it is generally believed to be associated with excess or deficiency of melanin content in the epidermis. Therefore, the therapeutic strategies of hyperpigmentation or hypopig

Psychogenic Gait Disorder Complicating Recovery After Concussion: A Case Series.

BACKGROUND: Gait impairment is common after concussion. "Dizziness" is associated with prolonged recovery after concussion. Most often each of these symptoms is considered to be of vestibular origin. However, whether or not there are psychological etiologies of gait instability that complicate concussion recovery has been less fully explored. METHODS: A chart review was performed of all patients seen between 2017 and 2019 in a weekly pediatric traumatic brain injury clinic. RESULTS: Of eighty-four patients with traumatic brain injury, five were found to have developed a classic psychogenic g

Specificity and item endorsement rates of personality assessment inventory over-reporting scales across ethnic, gender, and diagnostic groups in a forensic inpatient sample.

The accurate evaluation of response style, particularly with respect to overreporting, is imperative in forensic settings wherein an external incentive to feign exists. Given the high cost of false positive errors in this context, as well as the associated cost of false negative errors, evaluators need to ensure that overreporting methods are effective with the unique patient populations with whom they work. Complicating this issue is that forensic samples often differ in predictable ways from the normative samples upon which typical psychological assessment instruments were normed. The purpos
