Congenital penile curvature as a possible risk factor for the onset of Peyronie's disease, and psychological consequences of penile curvature.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate a possible relationship between a history of congenital penile curvature (CPC) and Peyronie's disease (PD), and to characterize the psychological profile of patients suffering from PD, with or without concomitant CPC. METHODS: We included 519 patients with Peyronie's disease (PD), of which 73 were found to have underlaying CPC. As a comparator population, we selected 2166 patients without PD, referring to our tertiary care clinic. In this population we detected 15 subjects with CPC. All patients completed the GAD-7 (Generalized-Anxiety-Disorder - 7 questions) and the

Medical student anxiety and depression in the COVID-19 Era: Unique needs of underrepresented students.

BACKGROUND: The COVID-19 pandemic has caused significant morbidity, mortality, and mental health consequences. Few studies have examined the mental toll of COVID-19 on United States (US) medical students, who experience greater rates of depression and anxiety than the general population. Students who identify as underrepresented in medicine (URM) may experience even greater mental health adversities than non-URM peers. This study examines COVID-19's impact on preclinical medical student anxiety and depression and unique challenges disproportionately affecting URM students during the initial ph

Depression, Anxiety, and Mother-Infant Bonding in Women Seeking Treatment for Postpartum Depression Before and During the COVID-19 Pandemic.

Objective: The conditions created by the COVID-19 pandemic could negatively affect maternal mental health and the mother-infant relationship. The aim of this study is to determine the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on depression, anxiety, and mother-infant bonding among women seeking treatment for postpartum depression (PPD). Methods: Baseline data collected in two separate randomized controlled trials of a psychoeducational intervention for PPD in the same geographic region, one prior to COVID-19 (March 2019-March 2020) and one during the COVID-19 pandemic (April-October 2020), were compared

A Text Messaging Intervention (StayWell at Home) to Counteract Depression and Anxiety During COVID-19 Social Distancing: Pre-Post Study.

BACKGROUND: Social distancing and stay-at-home orders are critical interventions to slow down person-to-person transmission of COVID-19. While these societal changes help contain the pandemic, they also have unintended negative consequences, including anxiety and depression. We developed StayWell, a daily skills-based SMS text messaging program, to mitigate COVID-19-related depression and anxiety symptoms among people who speak English and Spanish in the United States. OBJECTIVE: This paper describes the changes in StayWell participants' anxiety and depression levels after 60 days of exposure

Mapping memory at scale: systems-level insights with translational and transdiagnostic relevance to fear-related disorders.

Fear-related disorders-including post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), specific phobias, and generalized anxiety disorder-are among the most prevalent and treatment-resistant psychiatric conditions. Despite decades of molecular and cellular advances, systemic pharmacological interventions and approaches targeting isolated brain regions have had limited therapeutic capacity, particularly in refractory patients. This mini-review argues that the translational impasse stems from a reductionist framework that treats mental disorders in general, and fear-related disorders in particular, as a locali

Inflammatory bowel disease and neuropsychiatric disorders: Mechanisms and emerging therapeutics targeting the microbiota-gut-brain axis.

Crohn's disease (CD) and ulcerative colitis (UC) are the two major entities of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). These disorders are known for their relapsing disease course and severe gastrointestinal symptoms including pain, diarrhoea and bloody stool. Accumulating evidence suggests that IBD is not only restricted to the gastrointestinal tract and that disease processes are able to reach distant organs including the brain. In fact, up to 35 % of IBD patients also suffer from neuropsychiatric disorders such as generalized anxiety disorder and major depressive disorder. Emerging research in th

Prevalence of suicide risk among a national sample of individuals referred from a primary care subpopulation, 2017-2020.

Over the past decade, the age-adjusted suicide rate has increased by 35.2% in the United States. In primary care, practitioners often interact with patients at risk of dying by suicide, yet little is known about the prevalence of suicide risk in primary care populations. Patient data from 2017-2020, consisting of a national sample of patients referred from primary care and enrolled in collaborative care behavioral health services (n = 37 666), were analyzed. Controlling for demographic characteristics, logistic models were used to compare suicide risk prevalence by behavioral health diagnosis.

Predicting Posttraumatic Stress Disorder Among Survivors of Recent Interpersonal Violence.

A substantial minority of women who experience interpersonal violence will develop posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD). One critical challenge for preventing PTSD is predicting whose acute posttraumatic stress symptoms will worsen to a clinically significant degree. This 6-month longitudinal study adopted multilevel modeling and exploratory machine learning (ML) methods to predict PTSD onset in 58 young women, ages 18 to 30, who experienced an incident of physical and/or sexual assault in the three months prior to baseline assessment. Women completed baseline assessments of theory-driven cogn

Social Context and Gaming Motives Predict Mental Health Better Than Time Played: An Exploratory Regression Analysis with over 13,000 Video Game Players.

Video gaming has become massively adopted over the last years and Internet gaming disorder (IGD) has been noted as an increasing mental health problem. In this context, earlier studies focused on raw playtime (number of hours). Later studies also incorporated gaming motives while social contexts were not considered directly. Because social inclusion is one of the most powerful predictors of general mental health, in this study, we focused on the social context in which games are played. The sample consisted of 13,464 participants from 109 different countries, who played an average of ∼22 hours

A Review of Alprazolam Use, Misuse, and Withdrawal.

: Alprazolam is one of the most widely prescribed benzodiazepines for the treatment of generalized anxiety disorder and panic disorder. Its clinical use has been a point of contention as most addiction specialists consider it to be highly addictive, given its unique psychodynamic properties which limit its clinical usefulness, whereas many primary care physicians continue to prescribe it for longer periods than recommended. Clinical research data has not fully shed light on its "abuse liability," yet it is one of the most frequently prescribed benzodiazepines. "Abuse liability" is the degree t
