Marine bacteria are a rich source of bioactive compounds, many of which are encoded by biosynthetic gene clusters (BGCs). Understanding the diversity and structural variability of these clusters can provide insights into novel natural product discovery. This study analyzed 199 marine bacterial genomes from 21 species, screening for BGCs using antiSMASH 7.0. Phylogenetic relationships were assessed using rpoB gene-based analysis, and BGC clustering was performed using BiG-SCAPE. The study focused on NI-siderophore BGCs encoding vibrioferrin, assessing genetic and structural variations across Vi

Maternal mRNAs and proteins are produced during oogenesis by more than 60% of zebrafish genes. They are indispensable for fertilization and early embryogenesis. Generation and analysis of the maternal mutant is the most direct way to characterize the maternal function of the specific gene. However, due to the lethality of zygotic mutants, the maternal function of most genes in zebrafish remains elusive. Several methods have been developed to circumvent this obstacle, including mRNA rescue, germ-line replacement, oocyte microinjection in situ, mosaic mutation, and bacterial artificial chromosom

Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) is under-monitored in Africa, with few reports characterizing resistant bacteria from the environment. This study examined physicochemical parameters, chemical contaminants and antibiotic-resistant bacteria in waste stabilization pond effluents, hospital wastewater and domestic wastewater from four sewerage sites in Kumasi. The bacteria isolates were sequenced. Three sites exceeded national guidelines for total suspended solids, biochemical oxygen demand, chemical oxygen demand and electrical conductivity. Although sulfamethoxazole levels were low, the antibiotic

In many cases, the etiopathogenesis of oral cavity diseases depends on the presence of variants in some genes. Being able to identify these variants defines the possibilities and limits of therapies. This multidisciplinary case describes several pathologies of the oral cavity in a young patient affected by type 1 diabetes. The patient presented with an impacted palatal canine. Further investigation revealed cervical root resorption of the upper right central incisor. Genetic testing was performed for interleukin, VDR receptor genes, and the evaluation of periodontopathogenic bacteria. The muta

Achilles tendon rupture is a common and serious condition that remains a challenge in the restoration of tendon structure and function. The design and use of high-performance piezoelectric materials serve as an effective solution to enhance repair outcomes, shorten recovery times, and reduce the risk of recurrence. In this study, we prepared a chitosan piezoelectric gel (CSPG) as an organic polymer with excellent biocompatibility, stretchability, and piezoelectric properties as well as excellent antibacterial properties. In vitro experiments showed that CSPG, which induces a piezoelectric effe

Pollutants in livestock manure have a compound effect during aerobic composting, but research to date has focused more on single factors. This study investigated the effects of adding amoxicillin (AMX), copper (Cu) and both (ACu) on nitrogen transformation and the microbial mechanisms in cow manure aerobic composting with wheat straw. In this study, compared with CK, AMX, Cu, and ACu increased NH3 cumulative emissions by 32.32%, 41.78% and 8.32%, respectively, due to their inhibition of ammonia oxidation. Coexisting AMX and Cu decreased the absolute abundances of amoA/ nxrA genes and increased

Tenacibaculosis is an ulcerative skin disorder that affects finfish. It is caused by members of the genus Tenacibaculum, resulting in eccentric behavioural changes, including anorexia, lethargy, and abnormal swimming patterns that often result in mortality. Currently, species suspected of causing fish mortality include T. ovolyticum, T. gallaicum, T. discolor, T. finnmarkense, T. mesophilum, T. soleae, T. dicentrarchi, and T. maritimum. However, pathogenic members and the mechanisms involved in disease causation, progression, and transmission are limited due to the inadequate sequencing effort

Pseudomonas aeruginosa is a pathogenic bacterium that can cause serious infections in both humans and animals, including dogs. Treatment of this bacterium is challenging because some strains have developed multi-drug resistance. This study aimed to evaluate the antimicrobial resistance patterns and biofilm production of clinical isolates of P. aeruginosa obtained from dogs. The study found that resistance to various β-lactam antimicrobials was widespread, with cefovecin and ceftiofur showing resistance in 74% and 59% of the isolates tested, respectively. Among the aminoglycosides, all strains

Medicarpin is an important bioactive compound with multiple medicinal activities, including anti-tumor, anti-osteoporosis, and anti-bacterial effects. Medicarpin is associated with pterocarpans derived from medicinal plants, such as Sophora japonica, Glycyrrhiza uralensis Fisch., and Glycyrrhiza glabra L. However, these medicinal plants contain only low amounts of medicarpin. Moreover, the planting area for medicarpin-producing plants is limited; consequently, the current medicarpin supply cannot meet the high demands of medicinal markets. In this study, eight key genes involved in medicarpin

Chitinases, a group of glycosylase hydrolases that can hydrolyze chitin, are involved in immune regulation in animals. White spot syndrome virus (WSSV) causes huge losses to crustacean aquaculture every year. We identified a novel chitinase Chi6 from Pacific white shrimp Penaeus vannamei, which contains a catalytic domain but no chitin-binding domain. The Chi6 expression was regulated by multiple immune signaling pathways and increased after immune stimulations. Silencing of Chi6 by RNAi in vivo did not affect Vibrio parahaemolyticus infection, but significantly increased the survival rate of

Streptococcus suis is a leading cause of bacterial meningitis in South-East Asia, with frequent zoonotic transfer to humans associated with close contact with pigs. A small number of invasive lineages are responsible for endemic infection in the swine industry, causing considerable global economic losses. A lack of surveillance and a rising trend in clinical treatment failure has raised concerns of growing antimicrobial resistance (AMR) among invasive S. suis . Gene flow between healthy and disease isolates is poorly understood and, in this study, we sample and sequence a collection of isola

Burkholderia cenocepacia is known for its capacity of adherence and interaction with the host, causing severe opportunistic lung infections in cystic fibrosis patients. In this work we produced Giant Plasma Membrane Vesicles (GPMVs) from a bronchial epithelial cell line and validated their use as a cell-like alternative to investigate the steps involved in the adhesion process of B. cenocepacia. RNA-sequencing was performed and the analysis of the B. cenocepacia K56-2 transcriptome after the first contacts with the surface of host cells allowed the recognition of genes implicated in bacterial

An increasing resistance to vancomycin among clinically relevant enterococci, such as Enterococcus faecalis and Enterococcus faecium is a cause of a great concern, as it seriously limits treatment options. The vanB operon is one of most common determinants of this type of resistance. Genes constituting the operon are located in conjugative transposons, such as Tn1549-type transposons or, more rarely, in ICEEfaV583-type structures. Such elements show differences in structure and size, and reside in various sites of bacterial chromosome or, in the case of Tn1549-type transposons, are also occasi

Genomic studies have indicated that certain bacterial lineages such as the Bacteroidetes lack Shine-Dalgarno (SD) sequences, and yet with few exceptions ribosomes of these organisms carry the canonical anti-SD (ASD) sequence. Here, we show that ribosomes purified from Flavobacterium johnsoniae, a representative of the Bacteroidetes, fail to recognize the SD sequence of mRNA in vitro. A cryo-electron microscopy structure of the complete 70S ribosome from F. johnsoniae at 2.8 Å resolution reveals that the ASD is sequestered by ribosomal proteins bS21, bS18 and bS6, explaining the basis of ASD in

Urinary tract infections (UTIs) belong to the most common pathologies in Mexico and are mainly caused by Uropathogenic Escherichia coli (UPEC). UPEC possesses a wide diversity of virulence factors that allow it to carry out its pathogenesis mechanism in the urinary tract (UT). The development of morphotypes in UT represents an important feature of UPEC because it is associated with complications in diagnosis of UTI. The aim of this study was to determine the presence of bacterial morphotypes, virulence genes, virulence phenotypes, antibiotic resistant, and phylogenetic groups in clinical isola
