Plant phenotypes arise from complex interactions among genetic, epigenetic, and environmental factors. Deciphering the molecular mechanisms responsible for phenotypic variation requires comprehensive multi-omics approaches that integrate diverse genomic, transcriptomic, and environmental datasets. Here, we perform high-throughput phenotyping of rice subspecies cultivars (Nip and 93-11), covering key growth stages under heat, drought, and salt stress. Using the EfficientNet framework, we generate image embeddings for cultivar classification and stress-type identification. Whole-genome bisulfite

Sugarcane smut, caused by S. scitamineum, results in substantial economic losses across global sugarcane growing areas. Elucidating the pathogenic mechanisms of S. scitamineum is therefore crucial for developing effective disease control strategies. Our previous work has shown that the protein phosphatase SsPpe1 regulates mating and pathogenicity in S. scitamineum. In this study, we identified SsRts1 as a novel interacting protein of SsPpe1, which contains a PP2A regulator subunit B56 domain. Deletion of Ssrts1 gene impaired sporidia growth, resulting in pseudohyphal sporidia with multiple nuc

Baculoviruses are orally infectious to insects and considered to be natural insecticides. To enhance their speed-of-kill these viruses were engineered to express arthropod neurotoxins under the control of various strong promoters. Although this strategy proved to be efficient, it raised recently concerns about safety. We analyzed the speed-of-kill and safety of Autographa californica multiple nucleopolyhedrovirus expressing the insecticidal scorpion neurotoxin AaIT and found that the mortality of Helicoverpa armigera larvae was enhanced significantly when the expression was controlled by the b

INTRODUCTION: The early stage of cold acclimation (CA) is a critical period during which plants gradually transition from cold sensing to the establishment of acquired freezing tolerance. Winter rye (Secale cereale L.) is a cereal crop with superior cold hardiness. However, the temporal transcriptional dynamics during early CA and the tissue-specific expression patterns between leaves and roots remain poorly understood.
METHODS: We evaluated the growth and freezing survival of 'White BK-1' during long-term CA and profiled leaf and root transcriptomes at multiple time points during the first 4

Due to having positive effects on aquaculture, plant-based dietary is very important. Therefore, this research examined the barberry root powder (BRP) supplementation on various parameters including growth performance, blood characteristics, antioxidant activity, gene expression related to antioxidant activity, and antibacterial properties in juvenile grass carp. The carps (mean weight 9 ± 0.58 g) were divided into 4 groups (a control group and three treatment groups receiving 0.5%, 1%, and 2% BRP), and the experiment duration was for 56 days. The results indicated no significant differences i

Plant immunity relies on dynamic modulation of phytohormone signaling to balance growth and defense, with auxin contributing to resistance against the necrotrophic pathogen Botrytis cinerea (B. cinerea). However, how plants rapidly and precisely regulate auxin biosynthesis during pathogen infection remains unclear. Here, we identified the nitrilases NIT1, NIT2, and NIT3, as key components of auxin biosynthesis during infection. Upon chitin perception, CERK1 associates with and phosphorylates nitrilases to stimulate the conversion of indole-3-acetonitrile (IAN) into indole-3-acetic acid (IAA),

In the root apical meristem, the stem cell niche (SCN) comprises a mitotically inactive quiescent center (QC) and adjacent, mitotically active stem cells that divide to form root tissues. Auxin dynamics are essential for specification and maintenance of the root SCN; however, the underlying mechanisms remain to be explored. Here, we report that Arabidopsis (Arabidopsis thaliana) AUXIN RESPONSE FACTOR3 (ARF3), ARF3-INTERACTING PROTEIN1/2 (AIP1/2), and SIN3-ASSOCIATED POLYPEPTIDE OF 18 KDA (SAP18) form a protein complex that specifies root SCN cell fate in response to auxin level. Seed storability is crucial for maintaining vigor at the sowing stage and ensuring agricultural sustainability. Although molecular chaperones are well characterized in protein homeostasis, their roles in regulating ABA receptor stability and starch integrity during seed aging remain unclear. Here, we demonstrate that OsCPN10a enhances storability by maintaining ABA homeostasis, suppressing ROS accumulation, and preserving starch granule structure. Genetic and biochemical analyses reveal that OsCPN10a functions upstream of the OsCPN20-OsHSP60-3B cascade, directly interacts with both partners to

Heat stress poses a severe threat to global crop yields and food security. Here, we demonstrate that TaSnRK1α1, the α-catalytic subunit of sucrose non-fermenting-1-related kinase 1, serves as a pivotal regulator that confers thermotolerance and enhances grain weight in wheat (Triticum aestivum L.). The findings reveal that TaMYB55 directly binds to the TaSnRK1α1 promoter to activate its expression, which positively contributes to heat tolerance in wheat. An A-to-G substitution in the TaSnRK1α1 promoter enhances the binding affinity of TaMYB55, which cosegregates with wheat thermotolerant pheno

Soil salinity disrupts redox homeostasis and limits plant growth and development. Although catalase (CAT) and superoxide dismutase (SOD) are key enzymatic antioxidants, the CAT and SOD gene families have not been characterized in Artemisia argyi (A. argyi), a species of medicinal and ecological importance. While SOD and CAT serve as the primary enzymatic scavengers for reactive oxygen species (ROS) detoxification, their genomic architecture and stress-responsive regulatory networks in A. argyi have remained uncharacterized. In this study, we conducted the first comprehensive genome-wide analys

In Arabidopsis, BRASSINOSTEROID INSENSITIVE1-ASSOCIATED RECEPTOR KINASE 1 (BAK1)-INTERACTING RECEPTOR-LIKE KINASE 1 (BIR1) is a negative regulator of plant immunity and cell death. BIR1 was earlier described as a target of epigenetic and post-transcriptional degradation. During virus infections, degradome analysis of BIR1 transcripts mapped predominant mRNA cleavage sites at the 5'-untranslated leader region (site A) and the protein-coding sequence (sites B and C). Here, we identified another virus-associated cleavage site (D) within the BIR1 coding region and investigated the contribution of

Plants actively monitor the state of their cell walls and adapt their structure and composition as needed. THESEUS1 (THE1), a receptor kinase from the Catharanthus roseus RECEPTOR-LIKE KINASE 1-LIKE (CrRLK1L) family, was the first receptor kinase described to be involved in this maintenance of cell wall integrity in Arabidopsis thaliana. It contributes to the regulation of cell wall stiffness, participates in lateral root development, and modulates production of the stress hormones abscisic acid and jasmonic acid. Besides, it is required for responses to cellulose biosynthesis inhibition, such

In recent years, the discovery of new antimicrobial agents has become necessary because of the increase in antibiotic resistance, the development of herbicides and fungicides resistance. Among the antimicrobial agents, antimicrobial peptides (AMPs) stand out due to their stable structure. In this study, the aim was to identify a thermostable AMP from the seeds of M. sativa "Sazova" cultivar and to analyze gene expression during germination. Antimicrobial tests were performed for the seed peptides after heat treatment (85 °C for 10 min), revealing antimicrobial effects against S. aureus, E. col

Elevated levels of reactive oxygen species (ROS) are caused by ultraviolet B radiation (UV-B) stress. In response, plants strengthen their cell membranes, impeding photosynthesis. Additionally, UV-B stress initiates oxidative stress within the antioxidant defense system and alters secondary metabolism, particularly by increasing the quantity of UV-absorbing compounds such as flavonoids. The v-myb avian myeloblastosis viral oncogene homolog (MYB) transcription factor (TF) may participate in a plant's response to UV-B damage through its regulation of flavonoid biosynthesis. In this study, we dis

Heat stress impacts photosynthesis and carbohydrate metabolism, challenging food security. To comprehend the mechanisms of thermotolerance, we examined the role of ethylene (ET) and hydrogen sulfide (H2S) with or without sulfur (S) in rice (Oryza sativa L.). Both ET and H2S promoted heat stress tolerance more conspicuously in the presence of S, restoring the balance between carbon assimilation and utilization. The enhanced photosynthesis in ET and H2S-treated plants under heat stress was linked with increased relative expression of Rubisco subunits rbcS and rbcL and carbohydrate metabolizing,

All eukaryotes possess three DNA-dependent RNA polymerases, Pols I-III, while land plants possess two additional polymerases, Pol IV and Pol V. Derived through duplication of Pol II subunits, Pol IV produces 24-nt short interfering RNAs that interact with Pol V transcripts to target de novo DNA methylation and silence transcription of transposons. Members of the grass family encode additional duplicated subunits of Pol IV and V, raising questions regarding the function of each paralog. In this study, we identify a null allele of the putative Pol IV second subunit, NRPD2, and demonstrate that N

The latest data link the chronic consumption of large amounts of fructose present in food with the generation of hypertension and disturbances in carbohydrate and lipid metabolism, which promote the development of obesity, non-alcoholic fatty liver disease, insulin resistance, and type 2 diabetes. This effect is possible after fructose is absorbed by the small intestine cells and, to a lesser extent, by hepatocytes. Fructose transport is dependent on proteins from the family of glucose transporters (GLUTs), among which GLUT5 selectively absorbs fructose from the intestine. In this study, we ex

UNLABELLED: Gluten proteins are major determinants of the bread making quality of wheat, but also of important wheat-related disorders, including coeliac disease (CD), and allergies. We carried out a proteomic study using the total grain proteins from two low-gliadin wheat lines, obtained by RNAi, and the untransformed wild type as reference. The impact of silencing on both target and on non-target proteins was evaluated. Because of the great protein complexity, we performed separate analyses of four kernel protein fractions: gliadins and glutenin subunits, and metabolic and CM-like proteins,

BACKGROUND: Host RNA-dependent RNA polymerases (RDRs) 1 and 6 contribute to antiviral RNA silencing in plants. RDR6 is constitutively expressed and was previously shown to limit invasion of Nicotiana benthamiana meristem tissue by potato virus X and thereby inhibit disease development. RDR1 is inducible by salicylic acid (SA) and several other phytohormones. But although it contributes to basal resistance to tobacco mosaic virus (TMV) it is dispensable for SA-induced resistance in inoculated leaves. The laboratory accession of N. benthamiana is a natural rdr1 mutant and highly susceptible to T
