Six-Week Pelvic Floor Muscle Activity (sEMG) Training in Pregnant Women as Prevention of Stress Urinary Incontinence.

BACKGROUND Pelvic floor muscle exercises are a widely used and well-established form of stress incontinence treatment, with success rates varying from 21% to 84%, although with a better subjective than objective outcome. MATERIAL AND METHODS "Incontinence Impact Questionnaire" (IIQ), PFM EMG assessment was done at the beginning and after the 6-week training program. RESULTS Statistically significant differences appeared in the BASE and R values. In the symptomatic group (with SUI symptoms), the value of BASE was 3.26 µV, and after training it was 3.95 µV. The R values before and after training

Assessment and conceptual remediation of basic calculation skills in elementary school students.

The specific domain model for math disabilities postulates a core number deficit which presents a prime target for remedial interventions. This longitudinal study identified two groups of Grade 3 students based on their basic calculation abilities: students with persistent difficulties through Grade 4 (PD group) and students whose performance improved into the average range (IP group). Baseline data revealed a distinct cognitive profile for students in the PD group featuring predominant deficits in symbolic number processing. A conceptual intervention based on explicit teaching of basic arithm

White matter hyperintensities are associated with the severity of late-life somatoform disorders and executive functions.

BACKGROUND: Medically unexplained symptoms are often seen in the elderly. Recently, correlations between medically unexplained symptoms and somatoform disorders (SDs) have been reported. The existence of many interactive psychiatric aetiologies is known among SDs. Late-life SDs might be influenced by some aetiological factors caused by ageing processes, such as structural changes in the brain and cognitive dysfunctions. AIMS: Under such circumstances, we investigated the presence of subcortical white matter hyperintensities (WMHs), which increase with ageing, and hypothesized that subcortical

Identifying selective visual attention biases related to fear of pain by tracking eye movements within a dot-probe paradigm.

This research examined selective biases in visual attention related to fear of pain by tracking eye movements (EM) toward pain-related stimuli among the pain-fearful. EM of 21 young adults scoring high on a fear of pain measure (H-FOP) and 20 lower-scoring (L-FOP) control participants were measured during a dot-probe task that featured sensory pain-neutral, health catastrophe-neutral and neutral-neutral word pairs. Analyses indicated that the H-FOP group was more likely to direct immediate visual attention toward sensory pain and health catastrophe words than was the L-FOP group. The H-FOP gro

Global and local evaluations of public speaking performance in social anxiety.

Differences in the relative use of global and local information (seeing the forest vs. the trees) may explain why people with social anxiety often do not benefit from corrective feedback, even though they pay close attention to details in social situations. In the current study, participants high (n=43) or low (n=47) in social anxiety symptoms gave a series of brief speeches, and then self-rated their speaking performance on items reflecting global and local performance indicators (self-assessment) and also received standardized performance feedback from an experimenter. Participants then comp

Biological tolerance of different materials in bulk and nanoparticulate form in a rat model: sarcoma development by nanoparticles.

In order to study the pathobiological impact of the nanometre-scale of materials, we evaluated the effects of five different materials as nanoparticulate biomaterials in comparison with bulk samples in contact with living tissues. Five groups out of 10 rats were implanted bilaterally for up to 12 months with materials of the same type, namely TiO2, SiO2, Ni, Co and polyvinyl chloride (PVC), subcutaneously with bulk material on one side of the vertebral column and intramuscularly with nanoparticulate material on the contralateral side. At the end of each implantation time, the site was macrosco

[Bacterial flora as a potential etiopathogenic factor for nasal polyps].

Nasal polyps develop in patients with disturbed local homeostasis of nasal mucosa. Research of Bernstein and Stoop showed the influence of inflammation of nasal mucosa on growth of nasal polyps. Bacterial and viral infections play significant role in development and intensification of inflammatory and immunological process. Many bacteria produce factors which damage cilia cells, cause dyskinesis of cilia and destroy respiratory epithelium. Disturbed muco-ciliar cleaning permits bacteria to penetrate through mucous layer and facilitate their adhesion and colonization on the cells of respiratory

Intra-uterine long bone growth in small-for-gestational-age infants.

To better understand the intra-uterine bone modelling and remodelling process in small-for-gestational-age (SGA) newborn infants, long bone growth was studied using postmortem X-ray films in a group of such infants (n = 34). Bone length, diaphyseal diameter, medullary diameter, cortical thickness, cortical area, the Barnett-Nordin index, and the percentage of cortical area were determined in femur, tibia, and humerus. A separate group of appropriate-for-gestational-age (AGA) newborn infants (n = 146) was used as controls. Length and cortical bone mass in all three bones were significantly lowe

Fronto-limbic emotional-processing markers signal risk of onset rather than risk of recurrence in mood disorders: Evidence from a longitudinal twin study.

AIMS: Mood disorders, including major depressive disorder (MDD) and bipolar disorder (BD), are highly heritable and linked to fronto-limbic circuit dysfunction. This longitudinal fMRI study examined whether baseline responses of the amygdala, anterior cingulate cortex (ACC), and ventrolateral prefrontal cortex (vlPFC) evoked by facial emotional expressions predicted first-onset or recurrence of mood episodes over 7 years in monozygotic twins. METHODS: The sample comprised 68 unaffected twins (UT) without a history of mood disorders but varying familial risk, and 62 affected twins (AT) in remi

Somatosensory processing in long COVID fatigue and its relations with physiological and psychological factors.

We aimed to quantify somatosensory processing in long COVID and interactions between somatosensory processing, fatigability, fatigue, autonomic function, mood and illness beliefs. Eighty-eight participants (44 long COVID and 44 controls) were invited to complete two testing sessions, where fatigue was induced by either a cognitive or a physical task in a cross-over design; all participants completed at least one session. Baseline questionnaires assessed trait fatigue, autonomic symptoms, mood and illness beliefs. Pre- and post-task measures included somatosensory processing, state fatigue, per

Beyond white matter topology: cortical geometry shapes the spatial pattern of face-processing plasticity following auditory deprivation.

The human brain can adapt its function in response to experience, and such plasticity mediates the influence of individual experience on cognition and behavior. Traditional accounts propose that functional brain plasticity is primarily driven by the rerouting of white matter fiber networks, that is, topological connectivity. However, accumulating evidence that intrinsic geometric features constrain neural dynamics raises the possibility that brain plasticity may also be shaped by cortical geometry. Yet, direct empirical support for this hypothesis remains scarce. Here, we combined a multivaria

Auditory sequence learning with degraded input: children with cochlear implants ('nature effect') compared to children from low and high socio-economic backgrounds ('nurture effect').

Implicit sequence learning (SL) is crucial for language acquisition and has been studied in children with organic language deficits (e.g., specific language impairment). However, language delays are also seen in children with non-organic deficits, such as those with hearing loss or from low socioeconomic status (SES). While some children with cochlear implants (CI) develop strong language skills, variability in performance suggests that degraded auditory input (nature) may affect SL. Low SES children typically experience language delays due to environmental deprivation (nurture). The purpose o

The impact of convergence insufficiency on selective visual attention among university students.

Convergence insufficiency (CI) is a common binocular vision disorder that impairs near vision-related tasks and is associated with symptoms such as eye strain, headaches, and reading difficulties. This study examined the effect of CI on selective visual attention by comparing performance on a modified visual search task between patients with CI and visually normal controls. A total of 42 male university students participated, including 20 patients diagnosed with CI and 22 age-matched controls. Participants completed a computerized visual search task involving different levels of target-distrac
