No evidence for enhanced noise induced hearing loss after prenatal stress or dexamethasone.

It was recently implied that prenatal stress and fetal exposure to glucocorticoids may interfere with hearing ability and noise induced hearing loss in adulthood. In the present study pregnant Wistar rats were stressed during gestation by Chronic Mild Stress (CMS, a variable schedule of different stressors) or by dexamethasone (a synthetic glucocorticoid, i.e. a pharmacological stressor). At birth, but not at weaning, the dexamethasone offspring exhibited significantly decreased body weight compared to both control offspring and progeny from dams exposed to CMS during pregnancy. As adults, mal

Agalsidase alpha and hearing in Fabry disease: data from the Fabry Outcome Survey.

Fabry disease is an X-linked lysosomal storage disorder characterized by multi-organ dysfunction, including hearing loss - mainly sensorineural. The recent introduction of enzyme replacement therapy (ERT) has resulted in improvements in renal and cardiac function, pain and quality of life. One study has also suggested small improvements in high-frequency hearing. In this paper, we study the effect of ERT on hearing in patients in the Europe-wide database - the Fabry Outcome Survey (FOS). Twenty-six patients in FOS had pure-tone audiometry performed up to 6 months before starting ERT with agals

The use of hearing protection devices by older adults during recreational noise exposure.

A population-based study to assess the use of hearing protection devices by older adults during noisy recreational activities was performed. The population-based Epidemiology of Hearing Loss Study was designed to measure the prevalence of hearing loss in adults residing in Beaver Dam, Wisconsin. The use of hearing protection devices during noisy recreational activities was assessed by performing three examinations over a period of 10 years (1993-1995, no. of participants (n)=3753, aged 48-92 years; 1998-2000, n=2800, aged 53-97 years; 2003-2005, n=2395, aged 58-100 years). The recreational act

Role of mitochondrial dysfunction and mitochondrial DNA mutations in age-related hearing loss.

Mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) mutations/deletions are considered to be associated with the development of age-related hearing loss (AHL). We assessed the role of accumulation of mtDNA mutations in the development of AHL using Polg(D257A) knock-in mouse, which exhibited increased spontaneous mtDNA mutation rates during aging and showed accelerated aging primarily due to increased apoptosis. They exhibited moderate hearing loss and degeneration of the hair cells, spiral ganglion cells and stria vascularis by 9 month of age, while wild-type animals did not. We next examined if mitochondrial damage in

Acoustic and perceptual study of Cantonese tones produced by profoundly hearing-impaired adolescents.

OBJECTIVE: This study investigated five acoustic parameters of fundamental frequency (f0), one related to average f0 level and four related to change of f0 (f0 change) over four consecutive quarters of the vocalic segment, for their roles as acoustic correlates to the perception of Cantonese lexical tones produced by profoundly hearing-impaired speakers. DESIGN: Speakers were 20 Cantonese adolescents, 10 of whom had normal-hearing (mean age = 13;05); the other 10 were profoundly hearing-impaired (mean age = 13;05). The hearing-impaired speakers were selected on the basis of the criterion of b

Activity limitation and participation restriction in adults seeking hearing aid fitting and rehabilitation.

PURPOSES: We first aimed to describe demographic and audiological characteristics of adults referred to a university hospital for hearing aid (HA) fitting and rehabilitation. Our second aim was to employ an inventory that assesses life consequences of hearing impairment (HI) in terms of perceived activity limitation and participation restriction for the first time in a Norwegian adult outpatient population. A third aim was to study life consequences by audiological and demographic characteristics. SUBJECTS AND METHODS: During one year consecutive patients (n = 343) were requested to answer th

Risk factors for sensorineural hearing loss in survivors with severe congenital diaphragmatic hernia.

Recent improvements in perinatal management have improved the prognosis in patients with severe congenital diaphragmatic hernia (CDH). However, in surviving patients with severe CDH, hearing loss has sometimes been reported to occur during the follow-up period. Although some of the risk factors for developing sensorineural hearing loss (SNHL) have been reported in CDH, no definitive risk factors have yet been reported. We, therefore, investigated the risk factors regarding postnatal management in patients with severe CDH. In 16 surviving patients with severe CDH, which had all been detected an

Isolated hemifacial hypertrophy: a case with upper airway obstruction and sensorineural hearing loss.

Hemifacial hypertrophy is an uncommon developmental disorder characterized by facial asymmetry that involves abnormal bone development and facial enlargement. Many cases of hemihypertrophy have been reported since the first case was reported by Wagner in 1839. We identified a child diagnosed with hemifacial hypertrophy and sensorineural hearing loss who presented with upper airway obstruction and cyanosis. We discuss treatment selection and review the associated head and neck symptoms.

Hearing loss after discontinuing secondary prophylaxis for cryptococcal meningitis: relapse or immune reconstitution?

Relapse and immune reconstitution syndrome are difficult to distinguish in HIV-infected patients treated with antiretroviral therapy (ART). We report on a 26-year-old HIV-infected male (CDC C3) with hearing loss on the right side 2 months after discontinuing secondary prophylaxis for cryptococcal meningitis. CD4 cell counts had increased from 32/microl to stable counts > 200/microl for the preceding 6 months on ART but HIV replication was not fully suppressed (7,000 copies/ml). Magnetic resonance imaging identified lesions at the origin of the right cranial nerve VIII. Lumbar puncture revealed

Comparison of two adaptive procedures for fitting a multi-channel compression hearing aid.

We compared two adaptive procedures for fitting a multi-channel compression hearing aid. "Camadapt" uses judgements of the loudness of speech stimuli and the tonal quality of music stimuli. "Eartuner" uses judgements of the loudness and clarity of speech stimuli with differing spectral characteristics. Sixteen new users of hearing aids were fitted unilaterally, using each procedure. The fittings were assigned to Programs 1 and 2 in the aid, in a counter-balanced order. Subjects kept a diary of their experiences with each program in everyday life. Following 2-4 weeks of experience, they filled

Contextual modulation of olivocochlear pathway effects on loud sound-induced cochlear hearing desensitization.

This study shows that the cochlear hearing losses [temporary threshold shifts (TTSs)] induced by traumatic sound and the effect of olivocochlear (OC) pathways to the cochlea on these hearing losses depend on the context of the sound. Background atraumatic white noise (WN) has been shown to 1) exacerbate loud-pure-tone-induced TTSs, and 2) promote the modulation of TTSs by the uncrossed OC (UOC) pathways additional to the action on TTSs, elicited by binaural loud tones themselves, by the crossed OC (COC) pathway. Here the same atraumatic WN reduced TTSs caused by loud narrow band sound. It also

[Analysis of audiological assessment and hearing aid evaluation results from 13 deaf children].

OBJECTIVE: To investigate why the ideal objective cannot be met after deaf children are fitted with hearing aids. METHOD: Complete audiological assessment and hearing aid check were done on 13 deaf children filled with hearing aids. RESULT: Two children were found to have otitis media with effusion and myringitis respectively. All hearing aids were matched improperly with inappropriate fit. CONCLUSION: After deaf children are fitted with hearing aids, they should be followed-up on a regular base in order to monitor their hearing and to check whether they wear the hearing aids properly with

Role of tumor necrosis factor-alpha in sensorineural hearing loss after bacterial meningitis.

HYPOTHESIS: Blockade of tumor necrosis factor-alpha with tumor necrosis factor-alpha antibody will reduce the extent of cochlear injury and hearing loss associated with Streptococcus pneumoniae meningitis. BACKGROUND: Inflammatory mediators play a significant role in the morbidity associated with bacterial meningitis, including hearing loss and labyrinthitis ossificans. Previous studies have shown the attenuation of hearing loss by the nonspecific blockade of such pathways. METHODS: Fifty Mongolian gerbils were divided into four groups. Auditory brainstem response testing was conducted to me

Challenges in management of childhood sensorineural hearing loss in sub-Saharan Africa, Nigeria.

The evaluation of a hearing-impaired child attempts to determine the aetiology, the degree of hearing loss and intervention to aid speech and language. This remains a challenge to practising otolaryngologists, especially in the developing countries as 85-90% of causes of hearing losses were never discovered leading to delayed intervention and irreversible effects. In a review of children presenting at the otolaryngology outpatient in the University College Hospital, Ibadan, Nigeria, sensorineural hearing loss was found in 103, giving a hospital prevalence rate of 14%, we still perceived this f

Behavioral audiometry: protocols for measuring hearing thresholds in babies aged 4-18 months.

OBJECTIVE: This paper provides the first report in English of original behavioral audiometry protocols for measuring hearing thresholds in very young children, including the multiply handicapped. METHODS: Based on reactions to one or two well-calibrated acoustic stimulations delivered in the sound field, the protocol first involves the use of a vibrator to measure hearing levels by bone conduction. This measurement technique, which is not affected by middle ear infections, is the key diagnostic step. Moreover, in profoundly hearing loss children, it triggers reactions through vibratory stimul

Comparison of acute low-tone sensorineural hearing loss versus Meniere's disease by electrocochleography.

To clarify the pathogenesis of acute low-tone sensorineural hearing loss (ALHL), we retrospectively compared the electrocochleographic findings from 20 patients with ALHL with those from 58 patients with Meniere's disease (MD) classified into 4 groups (MD1 through MD4) according to their pure tone average. The mean summating potential-action potential ratio in the ALHL group was 0.35 +/- 0.13, which was significantly higher than the control ratio but similar to the ratio seen in the MD1 group (pure tone average < 25 dB hearing level). The mean detection threshold of the cochlear microphonics i
