A 3-year-old boy underwent interventional closure of an atrial septal defect using an Amplatzer septal occluder. After 4 weeks, an aortic sinus-to-left atrial fistula was detected by echocardiography in an asymptomatic child. The device was surgically explanted with fistula and atrial septal defect closure. Follow-up was uneventful.

Chagas' disease, caused by Trypanosoma cruzi, leads to acute myocarditis and chronic cardiomyopathy. Myocardial structure and function were evaluated in T. cruzi (Brazil strain)-infected CD1 mice by histopathology, cardiac gated magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and transthoracic echocardiography. OBJECTIVE: Between 1985 and 1989, the surgical management of neonates with complete transposition (TGA) underwent a transition from atrial to arterial repair. We sought to examine the intermediate outcomes and their associated risk factors in neonates repaired during the era of transition.

A 72-year-old man presenting with the superior vena cava syndrome and intracardiac mass was admitted to our hospital. The mass was resected and confirmed to be invasive thymoma. The coexistence of tricuspid atresia and common arterial trunk is extremely rare. We present a successful three-stage surgical treatment of this defect. The first stage included disconnection of the pulmonary arteries from the common trunk, atrial septectomy and systemic-to-pulmonary shunt; the second stage, a hemi-Fontan procedure; and the third stage, a fenestrated Fontan completion. The child is now 8 years old and is developing well.

Lipomatous hypertrophy of the atrial septum (LHAS) has been associated with cardiac arrhythmias and is defined as fatty infiltration > 2 cm thick in the atrial septum. The clinical and histologic features of surgically excised LHAS have not been previously studied. This is a retrospective study of atrial screw-in leads implanted at the Singapore General Hospital from January 1988 to August 1990. There were 21 (13 female and 8 male) consecutive patients, with age ranging from 17 to 79 years (mean 55 years). Thirteen patients had sick sinus syndrome and the remaining eight patients had high grade AV block. Eleven patients had AAI, six had DDD and four had DDDR pacing modes respectively. The incidence of late systemic ventricular failure (SVF) was determined in 220 early survivors of atrial correction for transposition of great arteries (TGA), operated upon between 1964 and 1985. SVF was defined as either severe heart failure (NYHA class III or IV) or death due to the same cause, in the absence of other haemodynamic disturbances.
