An atypical case of bilateral pulmonary hydatid cyst with endo-rupture managed with two-stages uniportal video-assisted thoracoscopic surgery in Palestine: case report.

INTRODUCTION: Echinococcosis is a helminthic infection caused by cestodes of the genus Echinococcus (e.g., E. granulosus, E. multilocularis). Infection is typically acquired by accidental ingestion of Echinococcus eggs, which are shed in the feces of infected dogs. Infection results in cystic lesions in the liver (75% of cases), lungs (15% of cases) and, rarely, other organs. CASE PRESENTATION: We report here a case of a bilateral pulmonary hydatid cyst in a 19-year-old female with endo-rupture of the cyst in the right upper lobe. The patient presented with a history of longstanding dry cough

Circulating Cell-Free Nucleic Acid Detection for Wuchereria bancrofti Infections.

Human lymphatic filariasis (LF) is primarily caused by the helminth parasites Wuchereria bancrofti (Wb) and Brugia malayi (Bm). Detecting parasitic circulating cell-free nucleic acids (ccfDNA/ccfRNA) in plasma is a promising approach for detection of active infections. Plasma RNA sequencing analyses from individuals with active Wb infection and uninfected controls identified 6 RNA targets that were specific to Wb and/or Bm. Assays developed to detect either ccfDNA and ccfRNA were successfully used in Wb-infected individuals, but DNA-based assays targeting WbTR1 were found to be the most sensit

Phytic acid impairs macrophage inflammatory response in Echinococcus multilocularis infection.

The helminth Echinococcus multilocularis relies on immune evasion strategies to persist within its host. The laminated layer (LL) surrounding the parasite provides physical protection while modulating host immune responses. E. multilocularis' immunomodulatory mechanisms are poorly understood and we explored the role of phytic acid, a known component of E. granulosus sensu lato. We show that phytic acid is also present in E. multilocularis-infected tissue and impairs macrophage inflammation. In vivo, inflammatory macrophages accumulate near the metacestode, yet do not express IL-6, indicating a

Transient Pure Red Cell Aplasia in a Case of Plasmodium falciparum and Parvovirus B19 Coinfection.

Malaria predisposes to anemia in endemic areas, and this effect is compounded by other factors, such as malnutrition, HIV-1 infection, and intestinal helminth infestation. An association with human parvovirus B19 (B19V), with its high infectivity and seroprevalence, is also increasingly recognized. A 22-year-old gentleman, a native of West Bengal, India, was diagnosed with complicated falciparum malaria and treated with intravenous artesunate followed by artemether-lumefantrine. However, despite clearance of parasitemia, he developed a persistent hypoproliferative anemia with no evidence of he

Tapeworms in an Apex Predator: First Molecular Identification of Taenia krabbei and Taenia hydatigena in Wolves (Canis lupus) from Romania.

The wolf (Canis lupus) is an apex predator with high mobility and trophic plasticity, serving as a valuable indicator of helminth transmission at the wildlife-livestock interface. Given the ecological overlap between wolves and both wild and domestic ungulates in Romania, we aimed to identify and molecularly characterize cestodes from wolves' small intestines. Between November 2022 and June 2025, small intestines from nine wolves were collected across four Romanian counties, frozen, and examined using classical parasitology (macroscopic and microscopic) and molecular methods (PCR amplification

Update on type 2 immunity.

This review article summarizes and comments on the mechanistic work on type 2 immunity published between January 2022 and September 2024. Type 2 immunity is characterized by the production of IL-4, IL-5, IL-9, and IL-13 and is primarily known for its detrimental roles in allergic diseases and its protective roles in helminth infections. Other functions of type 2 immunity include protection against venoms and toxins, wound healing, tissue remodeling, regeneration, and metabolic homeostasis. This review article discusses novel findings on regulation of these processes and disease states by selec

A potential role of protein extractions from Metagonimus yokogawai in amelionating inflammation in patients with ankylosing spondylitis.

Helminth infections and their components has been recognized to have a positive impact on the immune system. This study aimed to investigate the potential of Metagonimus yokogawai-derived proteins (MYp) to provide protection against ankylosing spondylitis (AS) through modulation of immune responses. The cytotoxicity of MYp at various doses was first assessed using MTS and flow cytometry. Peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs) were collected from AS patients, and the production of inflammatory cytokines was analyzed through flow cytometry. In the experiments with SKG mice, MYp or vehicle wa

Recent Advances in the Development of Adenovirus-Vectored Vaccines for Parasitic Infections.

Vaccines against parasites have lagged centuries behind those against viral and bacterial infections, despite the devastating morbidity and widespread effects of parasitic diseases across the globe. One of the greatest hurdles to parasite vaccine development has been the lack of vaccine strategies able to elicit the complex and multifaceted immune responses needed to abrogate parasitic persistence. Viral vectors, especially adenovirus (AdV) vectors, have emerged as a potential solution for complex disease targets, including HIV, tuberculosis, and parasitic diseases, to name a few. AdVs are hig

Rare Complication of Strongyloidiasis in Vietnam: A Case of Venous Thromboembolism and Duodenal Obstruction.

Strongyloidiasis, a chronic helminth infection caused by the parasitic nematode Strongyloides stercoralis, has various clinical manifestations. Although rare, duodenal obstructions and venous thromboembolism are possible complications of strongyloidiasis. This paper presents the case of a 47-year-old Vietnamese male with a history of right lower limb edema, anorexia, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, and abdominal discomfort lasting for four months. Venous Doppler ultrasound detected a thrombus in the right femoral vein, while an abdominal CT scan revealed a mass lesion suggestive of a lower bile du

[Alveolar echinococcosis in fattening pigs in a conventional housing system].

In a conventional fattening farm in southern Germany, up to 100 % of the livers of individual slaughter groups were condemned due to parasitic lesions during 2022. Intensification of antiparasitic metaphylaxis with fenbendazole to control Ascaris suum in the herd was unsuccessful. A pathomorphologic examination of 6 livers from two slaughter groups revealed oligofocal fibrotic inflammation. Histologically, chronic granulomatous hepatitis with massive involvement of eosinophilic granulocytes and central parasitic structures of a helminth were detected. Examination of the liver lesions by PCR re

Transverse Myelitis in the Setting of Enterobius vermicularis (Pinworm) Infection: Case Report.

Myelitis is a rare inflammatory myelopathy, and known associated etiologies only account for a small number of causes. A significant percentage of cases have an unknown etiology and are considered idiopathic. With 64% to 68% of cases fitting into the idiopathic category, helminth infections, and specifically pinworm parainfections, should be considered in cases that would otherwise be classified as idiopathic. This case report outlines a pediatric patient diagnosed with myelitis given her progressive weakness, fussiness, refusal to bear weight as well as magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) demons

Role of Seasonal Variation on The Prevalence and Risk Factors of Trichuriasis Among the Aboriginal Community in Malaysia.

Trichuris trichiura is a soil-transmitted helminth prevalent in developing countries with poor, inadequate sanitation and unsafe water sources. In Malaysia, the prevalence of trichuriasis is relatively high among the aboriginal community due to poverty and poor sanitation. However, there are few studies to determine the seasonal variation on the prevalence and risk factors to acquire Trichuris trichiura infection in Malaysia. The present study found higher Trichuris trichiura infection during the dry season (63.6%; 138/217) in comparison to the wet season (55.5%; 142/256). Low household income

Iron deficiency anaemia in sub-Saharan Africa: a review of current evidence and primary care recommendations for high-risk groups.

The epidemiology of iron deficiency anaemia in sub-Saharan Africa differs from that in other parts of the world. The low-quality diets prevalent in this region are a poor source of iron, the population is frequently exposed to infection, and demographic characteristics result in a greater prevalence of people at high risk of iron deficiency anaemia than in other parts of the world. We herein review the causes, disease burden, and consequences of iron deficiency anaemia in the general population in this region, and current policies and interventions for its control. The current debate is domina

Higher mucosal type II immunity is associated with increased gut microbiota diversity in BALB/c mice after Trichinella spiralis infection.

Understanding the interaction between the gut microbiota and Trichinella spiralis is of interest for the early diagnosis and development of therapeutics for trichinellosis and to reveal the potential role of microbiota in the mechanism of immunomodulation of this tissue-dwelling helminth. In this study, we utilized 16S rRNA gene sequencing to monitor the dynamics of the microbes in BALB/c mice challenged with T. spiralis. Flow cytometry and ELISA were used to analyze cytokines at the same time. Histopathological analysis of the duodenum was also conducted. We found that microbial perturbations

Enteric pathogens induce tissue tolerance and prevent neuronal loss from subsequent infections.

The enteric nervous system (ENS) controls several intestinal functions including motility and nutrient handling, which can be disrupted by infection-induced neuropathies or neuronal cell death. We investigated possible tolerance mechanisms preventing neuronal loss and disruption in gut motility after pathogen exposure. We found that following enteric infections, muscularis macrophages (MMs) acquire a tissue-protective phenotype that prevents neuronal loss, dysmotility, and maintains energy balance during subsequent challenge with unrelated pathogens. Bacteria-induced neuroprotection relied on

The combination of carvacrol and albendazole enhanced the efficacy of monotherapy in experimental alveolar echinococcosis.

Alveolar echinococcosis is a helminthic zoonosis caused by the larval stage of Echinococcus multilocularis. When surgical resection of the parasite is not feasible, pharmacological treatment with albendazole is the only option. Due to the difficulties in achieving the success of treatment, it is necessary to find new drugs to improve the treatment of this disease. In the present work, the efficacy of carvacrol alone or combined with albendazole was evaluated against E. multilocularis metacestodes. The association of carvacrol with albendazole produced a greater in vitro effect than the compoun
