[Diagnostic imaging for connective tissue diseases].

Guidelines and diagnostic algorithms for the introduction of diagnostic procedures for connective tissue diseases have not yet been established and standardized. Diagnosis is often based on the patients's typical history, clinical symptoms and specific laboratory profiles. The use of diagnostic imaging procedures is relevant for differential diagnosis, for the assessment of disease activity and organ involvement, for defining the prognosis and monitoring responses to therapy and side effects. Experience with these techniques and diagnostic procedures, their application, indications and analysi

[Technique and radiation dose of conventional X-rays and computed tomography of the sacroiliac joint].

Anterior-posterior (a.p.) or posterior-anterior X-rays of the sacroiliac joint, sometimes supplemented by a transverse view, have been the method of choice for diagnosis of patients suspected of having sacroiliitis. The sensitivity and specificity of conventional X-rays are relatively low, which can delay the diagnosis of sacroiliitis. Computed tomography (CT) is superior to conventional X-rays for diagnosis of sacroiliitis, but does emit a relatively higher dose of radiation. For this reason, particularly for females, CT should be optimized by employing semi-coronal planes which require a low

Evolving strategies for the management of non-palpable breast abnormalities.

Increased public and professional awareness has resulted in more women obtaining mammograms. As a result, the surgeon is often called on to diagnose and treat occult breast lesions. The development of new diagnostic modalities has changed the way such breast lesions are approached. Management decisions are made in the context of new pressures applied by the growing managed care imperative and increased mediocolegal exposure. In this review, we establish guidelines for the management of non-palpable breast abnormalities that place the welfare of the patient first.

Three-dimensional display of cardiac structures using reconstructed magnetic resonance imaging.

It is sometimes difficult to understand the three-dimensional (3D) relationship of cardiac and mediastinal structures despite advances in magnetic resonance (MR) imaging techniques. We present a low-cost system for 3D reconstruction of the major mediastinal structures by processing the MR imaging data on a NeXT workstation. MR images of multisection, multiphase, spin-echo techniques stored in a picture archiving and communication system (PACS) data base were used for the reconstruction. The computer program obtained the contours of the multiple components of the mediastinal structures by the c

Repeatability of an MRI protocol for generating habitats based on cellularity, perfusion, and hypoxia in a murine model of glioma.

BACKGROUND: Hypoxia, cellularity, and vascularity are well-established as important drivers of tumor growth and treatment response. Diffusion weighted (DW-), dynamic contrast enhanced magnetic (DCE-), and oxygen enhanced (OE-) MRI techniques have been developed to quantitatively map these three characteristics. We have developed and implemented a multi-parametric MRI protocol to identify tumor subregions that share similar biological features or "habitats". METHODS: We performed test-retest DW-, DCE-, and OE-MRI measurements on Wistar rats bearing a C6 glioma (n = 24). MRI data was summarized

Readout-segmented multi-shot diffusion-weighted MRI of the knee joint in patients with juvenile idiopathic arthritis.

BACKGROUND: Diffusion-weighted MRI has been proposed as a new technique for imaging synovitis without intravenous contrast application. We investigated diagnostic utility of multi-shot readout-segmented diffusion-weighted MRI (multi-shot DWI) for synovial imaging of the knee joint in patients with juvenile idiopathic arthritis (JIA). METHODS: Thirty-two consecutive patients with confirmed or suspected JIA (21 girls, median age 13 years) underwent routine 1.5 T MRI with contrast-enhanced T1w imaging (contrast-enhanced MRI) and with multi-shot DWI (RESOLVE, b-values 0-50 and 800 s/mm2). Contras

Contrast-enhanced dynamic MRI of adrenal masses: classification of characteristic enhancement patterns.

OBJECTIVE: This study evaluated the usefulness of dynamic MRI to differentiate various adrenal tumours. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Sixty-five adrenal tumours (28 adenomas, 22 metastases, seven phaeochromocytomas, five neurogenic tumours and three tuberculous granulomas) were evaluated with gadolinium-enhanced dynamic MRI (13 at 0.5 T, 52 at 1.5 T). In this technique, a series of 12 sequential images (gradient-echo images at 0.5 T and spin-echo images at 1.5 T) were obtained up to 21 min after bolus administration of 0.1 mmol/kg Gd-DTPA. RESULTS: All 28 adenomas showed peak enhancement in the ear

Imaging of postoperative tetralogy of Fallot repair.

Over the last years, the surgical techniques used to repair Tetralogy of Fallot as well as the cross-sectional cardiac imaging techniques have substantially improved. Now, the survival rate after surgical repair is more than 90% at 40 years old. A follow-up is needed and the imaging evaluation should be guided by the surgical techniques used. This article reviews the most common surgical procedures for a complete repair, the associated anatomic and hemodynamic complications and the role of cardiac imaging, mainly magnetic resonance imaging.

In vivo molecular imaging of colorectal cancer using quantum dots targeted to vascular endothelial growth factor receptor 2 and optical coherence tomography/laser-induced fluorescence dual-modality imaging.

Optical coherence tomography/laser induced fluorescence (OCT/LIF) dual-modality imaging allows for minimally invasive, nondestructive endoscopic visualization of colorectal cancer in mice. This technology enables simultaneous longitudinal tracking of morphological (OCT) and biochemical (fluorescence) changes as colorectal cancer develops, compared to current methods of colorectal cancer screening in humans that rely on morphological changes alone. We have shown that QDot655 targeted to vascular endothelial growth factor receptor 2 (QD655-VEGFR2) can be applied to the colon of carcinogen-treate

Multimodal MR imaging model to predict tumor infiltration in patients with gliomas.

INTRODUCTION: Gliomas remain difficult to treat, in part, due to our inability to accurately delineate the margins of the tumor. The goal of our study was to evaluate if a combination of advanced MR imaging techniques and a multimodal imaging model could be used to predict tumor infiltration in patients with diffuse gliomas. METHODS: Institutional review board approval and written consent were obtained. This prospective pilot study enrolled patients undergoing stereotactic biopsy for a suspected de novo glioma. Stereotactic biopsy coordinates were coregistered with multiple standard and advan

Golden-angle radial sparse parallel MRI: combination of compressed sensing, parallel imaging, and golden-angle radial sampling for fast and flexible dynamic volumetric MRI.

PURPOSE: To develop a fast and flexible free-breathing dynamic volumetric MRI technique, iterative Golden-angle RAdial Sparse Parallel MRI (iGRASP), that combines compressed sensing, parallel imaging, and golden-angle radial sampling. METHODS: Radial k-space data are acquired continuously using the golden-angle scheme and sorted into time series by grouping an arbitrary number of consecutive spokes into temporal frames. An iterative reconstruction procedure is then performed on the undersampled time series where joint multicoil sparsity is enforced by applying a total-variation constraint alo

Applications of phase-contrast velocimetry sequences in cardiovascular imaging.

AIMS: To describe and illustrate the main applications of phase-contrast flow quantification in cardiovascular imaging. CONCLUSION: Phase-contrast velocimetry sequences provide an accurate, reliable, reproducible and non-invasive study of blood flow, information which is sometimes not available from other investigation methods. The haemodynamic information obtained from these complement MRI angiography images. They appear to have a range of clinical applications, firstly improving pathophysiological understanding but also contributing to the treatment and follow-up strategy after surgical or
