Exploring multifractal-based features for mild Alzheimer's disease classification.

PURPOSE: Multifractal applications to resting state functional MRI (rs-fMRI) time series for diagnosing Alzheimer's disease (AD) are still limited. We aim to address two issues: (I) if and what multifractal features are sufficiently discriminative to detect AD from the healthy; (II) if AD classification could be further improved by combining multifractal features with traditional features in this field. METHODS: Rs-fMRI data of 25 AD patients and 38 normal controls were analyzed. A set of multifractal features were systematically investigated. Traditional features in monofractal, linear, and

Usefulness of PRESTO magnetic resonance imaging for the differentiation of schwannoma and meningioma in the cerebellopontine angle.

The principles of echo-shifting with a train of observations (PRESTO) magnetic resonance (MR) imaging technique employs an MR sequence that sensitively detects susceptibility changes in the brain. The effectiveness of PRESTO MR imaging was examined for distinguishing between cerebellopontine angle (CPA) schwannomas and meningiomas in 24 patients with CPA tumors, 12 with vestibular schwannomas, and 12 with meningiomas. Histopathological study of surgical specimens showed that 11 of the 12 schwannomas contained hemosiderin deposits and all had microhemorrhages. One meningioma contained hemosider

Costs of control: decreased motor cortex engagement during a Go/NoGo task in Tourette's syndrome.

Gilles de la Tourette syndrome is a neuropsychiatric disorder characterized by an impaired ability to inhibit unwanted behaviour. Although the presence of chronic motor and vocal tics defines Tourette's syndrome, other distinctive behavioural features like echo- and coprophenomena, and non-obscene socially inappropriate behaviour are also core features. We investigated neuronal activation during stimulus-driven execution and inhibition of prepared movements in Tourette's syndrome. To this end, we performed event-related functional magnetic resonance imaging and structural diffusion tensor imag

The lower cranial nerves: IX, X, XI, XII.

The lower cranial nerves innervate the pharynx and larynx by the glossopharyngeal (CN IX) and vagus (CN X) (mixed) nerves, and provide motor innervation of the muscles of the neck by the accessory nerve (CN XI) and the tongue by the hypoglossal nerve (CN XII). The symptomatology provoked by an anomaly is often discrete and rarely in the forefront. As with all cranial nerves, the context and clinical examinations, in case of suspicion of impairment of the lower cranial nerves, are determinant in guiding the imaging. In fact, the impairment may be located in the brain stem, in the peribulbar cis

Preoperative identification of the facial nerve in patients with large cerebellopontine angle tumors using high-density diffusion tensor imaging.

OBJECT: Facial nerve paresis can be a devastating complication following resection of large (> 2.5 cm) cerebellopontine angle (CPA) tumors. The authors have developed and used a new high-density diffusion tensor imaging (HD-DT imaging) method, aimed at preoperatively identifying the location and course of the facial nerve in relation to large CPA tumors. Their study objective was to preoperatively identify the facial nerve in patients with large CPA tumors and compare their HD-DT imaging method with a traditional standard DT imaging method and correlate with intraoperative findings. METHODS:

Regional sensitivity and coupling of BOLD and CBV changes during stimulation of rat brain.

Functional MRI of rat brain was performed at 2 Tesla following intravenous injection of cocaine in order to 1) determine if changes in CBV and changes in BOLD signal were regionally coupled in brain parenchyma, and 2) compare the sensitivities of these imaging methods across different brain structures. Percent changes in CBV and BOLD relaxation rate were spatially and temporally coupled during this graded brain activation. The use of contrast agent increased functional sensitivity in all parenchymal brain structures, with a strong but predictable dependence on the resting-state blood volume fr

The use of artificial intelligence to aid the diagnosis of lung cancer - A retrospective-cohort study.

INTRODUCTION: AI software in the form of deep learning-based automatic detection (DLAD) algorithms for chest X-ray (CXR) interpretation have shown success in early detection of lung cancer (LC), however, there remains uncertainty related to clinical validation. METHODS: CXRs and their corresponding chest-CT scans were retrospectively collated from a single institution between January 2019-2020. A commercially available AI software was used to evaluate 320 CXRs (<6 years prior-to-diagnosis) from 105 positive LC patients and 103 negative controls. Clinical reports were extracted and coded to co
